First ReadingGenesis 11:1-9*

From the Book of Genesis

1The whole earth was of one language and of one speech.2As they traveled east, they found a plain in the land of Shinar, and they lived there.3They said to one another,“Come, let’s make bricks, and burn them thoroughly.”They had brick for stone, and they used tar for mortar.4They said, “Come, let’s build ourselves a city, and a tower whose top reaches to the sky,and let’s make a name for ourselves, lest we be scattered abroad on the surface of the whole earth.”

5The Lord came down to see the city and the tower, which the children of men built.6The Lord said, “Behold, they are one people, and they all have one language, and this is what they begin to do.Now nothing will be withheld from them, which they intend to do.7Come, let’s go down, and there confuse their language, that they may not understand one another’s speech.”8So the Lord scattered them abroad from there on the surface of all the earth. They stopped building the city.9Therefore its name was called Babel, because there the Lord confused the language of all the earth. From there, the Lord scattered them abroad on the surface of all the earth.

Responsorial PsalmPsalm 33:10-11, 12-13, 14-15*

10The Lord brings the counsel of the nations to nothing. He makes the thoughts of the peoples to be of no effect.11The counsel of the Lord stands fast forever, the thoughts of his heart to all generations.

12Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord, the people whom he has chosen for his own inheritance.13The Lord looks from heaven. He sees all the sons of men.

14From the place of his habitation he looks out on all the inhabitants of the earth,15he who fashions all of their hearts;and he considers all of their works.

GospelMark 8:34—9:1

From the Gospel according to Mark

34He called the multitude to himself with his disciples and said to them,“Whoever wants to come after me,let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.35For whoever wants to save his life will lose it;and whoever will lose his life for my sakeand the sake of the Good News will save it.36For what does it profit a man to gain the whole worldand forfeit his life?37For what will a man give in exchange for his life?38For whoever will be ashamed of meand of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, the Son of Man also will be ashamed of himwhen he comes in his Father’s glory with the holy angels.”

1He said to them, “Most certainly I tell you, there are some standing herewho will in no way taste death until they see God’s Kingdom come with power.”

EpistleLectio

Léctio Epístolæ beáti Pauli Apóstoli ad Thessalonicénses

1 Thess 1:2-10

Lesson from the first letter of St. Paul the Apostle to the Thessalonians

1 Thess. 1:2-10

Brethren: We give thanks to God always for you all, continually making a remembrance of you in our prayers; being mindful before God our Father of your work of faith, and labor, and charity, and your enduring hope in our Lord Jesus Christ. We know, brethren, beloved of God, how you were chosen. For our Gospel was not delivered to you in word only, but in power also, and in the Holy Spirit, and in much fullness, as indeed you know what manner of men we have been among you for your sakes. And you became imitators of us and of the Lord, receiving the word in great tribulation, with joy of the Holy Spirit, so that you became a pattern to all the believers in Macedonia and in Achaia. For from you the word of the Lord has been spread abroad, not only in Macedonia and Achaia, but in every place your faith in God has gone forth, so that we need say nothing further. For they themselves report concerning us how we entered among you, and how you turned to God from idols, to serve the living and true God, and to await from heaven Jesus, His Son, Whom He raised from the dead, Who has delivered us from the wrath to come.

GospelEvangelium

Sequéntia ☩ sancti Evangélii secúndum Matthǽum.

Matt 13:31-35

Continuation of the Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew

Matt 13:31-35

At that time, Jesus spoke this parable to the crowds: The kingdom of heaven is like a grain of mustard seed, which a man took and sowed in his field. This indeed is the smallest of all the seeds; but when it grows up it is larger than any herb and becomes a tree, so that the birds of the air come and dwell in its branches. He told them another parable: The kingdom of heaven is like leaven, which a woman took and buried in three measures of flour, until all of it was leavened. All these things Jesus spoke to the crowds in parables, and without parables he did not speak to them; that what was spoken by the prophet might be fulfilled, I will open My mouth in parables, I will utter things hidden since the foundation of the world.

It is truly meet and just, and profitable unto salvation, that we should at all times, and in all places, give thanks to Thee, O Holy Lord, Father Almighty, eternal God, through Christ, our Lord. Through whom the Angels praise Thy Majesty, the Dominions adore it, the Powers are in awe. Which the heavens and the hosts of heaven together with the blessed Seraphim joyfully do magnify. And do Thou command that it be permitted us to join with them in confessing Thee, while we say with lowly praise:
