First ReadingEzekiel 18:21-28

From the Book of Ezekiel

21“But if the wicked turns from all his sinsthat he has committed, and keeps all my statutes, and does that which is lawful and right,he shall surely live.He shall not die.22None of his transgressionsthat he has committed will be remembered against him.In his righteousness that he has done, he shall live.23Have I any pleasure in the death of the wicked?”says the Lord GOD,“and not ratherthat he should return from his way, and live?

24“But when the righteous turns away from his righteousness, and commits iniquity, and does according to all the abominationsthat the wicked man does, should he live?None of his righteous deedsthat he has done will be remembered. In his trespass that he has trespassed, and in his sin that he has sinned,in them he shall die.

25“Yet you say, ‘The way of the Lord is not equal.’Hear now, house of Israel:Is my way not equal?Aren’t your ways unequal?26When the righteous man turns away from his righteousness, and commits iniquity, and dies in it, then he dies in his iniquity that he has done.27Again, when the wicked man turns away from his wickednessthat he has committed, and does that which is lawful and right,he will save his soul alive.28Because he considers, and turns away from all his transgressionsthat he has committed,he shall surely live.He shall not die.

Responsorial PsalmPsalm 130:1-2, 3-4, 5-7a, 7bc-8

1Out of the depths I have cried to you, Lord.2Lord, hear my voice.Let your ears be attentive to the voice of my petitions.

3If you, Lord, kept a record of sins,Lord, who could stand?4But there is forgiveness with you, therefore you are feared.

5I wait for the Lord.My soul waits.I hope in his word.6My soul longs for the Lord more than watchmen long for the morning, more than watchmen for the morning.7Israel, hope in the Lord,

7for there is loving kindness with the Lord.Abundant redemption is with him.8He will redeem Israel from all their sins.

GospelMatthew 5:20-26

From the Gospel according to Matthew

20For I tell you that unless your righteousness exceedsthat of the scribes and Pharisees, there is no way you will enter into the Kingdom of Heaven.

21“You have heard that it was said to the ancient ones,‘You shall not murder;’and ‘Whoever murders will be in danger of the judgment.’22But I tell you that everyonewho is angry with his brother without a cause will be in danger of the judgment.Whoever says to his brother, ‘Raca!’will be in danger of the council.Whoever says, ‘You fool!’will be in danger of the fire of Gehenna.

23“If therefore you are offering your gift at the altar, and there rememberthat your brother has anything against you,24leave your gift there before the altar, and go your way.First be reconciled to your brother, and then come and offer your gift.25Agree with your adversary quicklywhile you are with him on the way;lest perhaps the prosecutor deliver you to the judge, and the judge deliver you to the officer, and you be cast into prison.26Most certainly I tell you,you shall by no means get out of there until you have paid the last penny.

EpistleLectio

Léctio Ezechiélis Prophétæ

Ezech 18:20-28

Lesson from the Prophecy of Ezechiel

Ezech 18:20-28

Thus says the Lord God: Only the one who sins shall die. The son shall not be charged with the guilt of his father, nor shall the father be charged with the guilt of his son. The virtuous man’s virtue shall be his own, as the wicked man’s wickedness shall be his. But if the wicked man turns away from all the sins he committed, if he keeps all My statutes and does what is right and just, he shall surely live, he shall not die. None of the crimes he committed shall be remembered against him; he shall live because of the virtue he has practiced. Do I indeed derive any pleasure from the death of the wicked? says the Lord God. Do I not rather rejoice when he turns from his evil way that he may live? And if the virtuous man turns from the path of virtue to do evil, the same kind of abominable things that the wicked man does, can he do this and still live? None of his virtuous deeds shall be remembered, because he has broken faith and committed sin; because of this, he shall die. You say, ‘The Lord’s way is not fair!’ Hear now, house of Israel: Is it my way that is unfair, or rather, are not your ways unfair? When a virtuous man turns away from virtue to commit iniquity, and dies, it is because of the iniquity he committed that he must die. But if a wicked man, turning from the wickedness he has committed, does what is right and just, he shall preserve his life; since he has turned away from all the sins which he committed, he shall surely live, he shall not die, says the Lord almighty.

GospelEvangelium

Sequéntia ☩ sancti Evangélii secúndum Joánnem

Joann 5:1-15

In his jacébat multitúdo magna languéntium, cæcórum, claudórum, aridórum exspectántium aquæ motum. Is autem, qui sanus fúerat efféctus, nesciébat, quis esset. Jesus enim declinávit a turba constitúta in loco.

Continuation of the Holy Gospel according to John

John 5:1-15

At that time, there was a feast of the Jews, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. Now there is at Jerusalem, by the Sheepgate, a pool called in Hebrew Bethsaida, having five porticoes. In these were lying a great multitude of the sick, blind, lame, and those with shriveled limbs, waiting for the moving of the water. For an angel of the Lord used to come down at certain times into the pool, and the water was troubled. And the first to go down into the pool after the troubling of the water was cured of whatever infirmity he had. Now a certain man was there who had been thirty-eight years under his infirmity. When Jesus saw him lying there, and knew that he had been in this state a long time, He said to him, Do you want to get well? The sick man answered Him, Sir, I have no one to put me into the pool when the water is stirred; for while I am coming, another steps down before me. Jesus said to him, Rise, take up your pallet and walk. And at once the man was cured. And he took up his pallet and began to walk. Now that day was a Sabbath. The Jews therefore said to him who had been healed, It is the Sabbath; you are not allowed to take up your pallet. He answered them, He who made me well said to me, ‘Take up your pallet and walk.’ They asked him then, Who is the man who said to you, ‘Take up your pallet and walk’? But the man who had been healed did not know who it was, for Jesus had quietly gone away, since there was a crowd in the place. Afterwards Jesus found him in the temple, and said to him, Behold, you are cured. Sin no more, lest something worse befall you. The man went away and told the Jews that it was Jesus Who had healed him.

It is truly meet and just, right and for our salvation, that we should at all times, and in all places, give thanks unto Thee, O holy Lord, Father almighty, everlasting God; Who by this bodily fast, dost curb our vices, dost lift up our minds and bestow on us strength and rewards; through Christ our Lord. Through whom the Angels praise Thy Majesty, the Dominations worship it, the Powers stand in awe. The Heavens and the heavenly hosts together with the blessed Seraphim in triumphant chorus unite to celebrate it. Together with these we entreat Thee that Thou mayest bid our voices also to be admitted while we say with lowly praise:
