First ReadingDeuteronomy 26:4-10

From the Book of Deuteronomy

4The priest shall take the basket out of your hand, and set it down before the Lord your God’s altar.5You shall answer and say before the Lord your God,“My father was a Syrian ready to perish. He went down into Egypt, and lived there, few in number. There he became a great, mighty, and populous nation.6The Egyptians mistreated us,afflicted us, and imposed hard labor on us.7Then we cried to the Lord, the God of our fathers. The Lord heard our voice, and saw our affliction, our toil, and our oppression.8The Lord brought us out of Egypt with a mighty hand, with an outstretched arm, with great terror, with signs, and with wonders;9and he has brought us into this place, and has given us this land,a land flowing with milk and honey.10Now, behold, I have brought the first of the fruit of the ground, which you, the Lord, have given me.”You shall set it down before the Lord your God,and worship before the Lord your God.

Responsorial PsalmPsalm 91:1-2, 10-11, 12-13, 14-15*

1He who dwells in the secret place of the Most Highwill rest in the shadow of the Almighty.2I will say of the Lord, “He is my refuge and my fortress;my God, in whom I trust.”

10no evil shall happen to you, neither shall any plague come near your dwelling.11For he will put his angels in charge of you,to guard you in all your ways.

12They will bear you up in their hands,so that you won’t dash your foot against a stone.13You will tread on the lion and cobra. You will trample the young lion and the serpent underfoot.

14“Because he has set his love on me, therefore I will deliver him.I will set him on high, because he has known my name.15He will call on me, and I will answer him.I will be with him in trouble.I will deliver him, and honor him.

Second ReadingRomans 10:8-13

From the Letter of Paul to the Romans

8But what does it say?“The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart;”that is, the word of faith which we preach:9that if you will confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lordand believe in your heartthat God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.10For with the heart one believes resulting in righteousness;and with the mouth confession is made resulting in salvation.11For the Scripture says,“Whoever believes in him will not be disappointed.”

12For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek;for the same Lord is Lord of all,and is rich to all who call on him.13For, “Whoever will call on the name of the Lord will be saved.”

GospelLuke 4:1-13

From the Gospel according to Luke

1Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordanand was led by the Spirit into the wilderness2for forty days, being tempted by the devil. He ate nothing in those days.Afterward, when they were completed, he was hungry.

3The devil said to him,“If you are the Son of God,command this stone to become bread.”

4Jesus answered him, saying, “It is written,‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God.’”

5The devil, leading him up on a high mountain, showed him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time.6The devil said to him,“I will give you all this authority and their glory, for it has been delivered to me,and I give it to whomever I want.7If you therefore will worship before me,it will all be yours.”

8Jesus answered him, “Get behind me, Satan! For it is written,‘You shall worship the Lord your God,and you shall serve him only.’”

9He led him to Jerusalemand set him on the pinnacle of the temple, and said to him, “If you are the Son of God,cast yourself down from here,10for it is written,

‘He will put his angels in charge of you, to guard you;’

11and,

‘On their hands they will bear you up,lest perhaps you dash your foot against a stone.’”

12Jesus answering, said to him,“It has been said,‘You shall not tempt the Lord your God.’”

13When the devil had completed every temptation,he departed from him until another time.

EpistleLectio

Léctio Epístolæ beáti Pauli Apóstoli ad Corínthios

2 Cor 6:1-10.

Fratres: Exhortámur vos, ne in vácuum grátiam Dei recipiátis.

A reading from the Second Letter of St. Paul to the Corinthians

2 Cor. 6:1-10

Brethren: We entreat you not to receive the grace of God in vain. For He says, In an acceptable time I have heard you, and in the day of salvation I have helped you. Behold, now is the acceptable time; behold, now is the day of salvation! We give no offense to anyone, that our ministry may not be blamed. On the contrary, let us conduct ourselves in all circumstances as God’s ministers, in much patience; in tribulations, in hardships, in distresses; in stripes, in imprisonments, in tumults; in labors, in sleepless nights, in fastings; in innocence, in knowledge, in long-sufferings; in kindness, in the Holy Spirit, in unaffected love; in the word of truth, in the power of God; with the armor of justice on the right hand and on the left; in honor and dishonor, in evil report and good report; as deceivers and yet truthful, as unknown and yet well known, as dying, and behold, we live, as chastised but not killed, as sorrowful yet always rejoicing, as poor yet enriching many, as having nothing yet possessing all things.

GospelEvangelium

Sequéntia ☩ sancti Evangélii secúndum Matthǽum

Matt 4:1-11

In illo témpore: Ductus est Jesus in desértum a Spíritu, ut tentarétur a diábolo.

Continuation of the Holy Gospel according to Matthew

Matt 4:1-11

At that time, Jesus was led into the desert by the Spirit, to be tempted by the devil. And after fasting forty days and forty nights, He was hungry. And the tempter came and said to Him, If You are the Son of God, command that these stones become loaves of bread. But He answered and said, It is written, ‘Not by bread alone does man live, but by every word that comes forth from the mouth of God.’ Then the devil took Him into the holy city and set Him on the pinnacle of the temple, and said to Him, If You are the Son of God, throw Yourself down; for it is written, ‘He has given His angels charge concerning You; and upon their hands they shall bear You up, lest You dash Your foot against a stone.’ Jesus said to him, It is written further, ‘You shall not tempt the Lord your God.’ Again, the devil took Him to a very high mountain, and showed Him all the kingdoms of the world and the glory of them. And he said to Him, All these things will I give You, if You will fall down and worship me. Then Jesus said to him, Begone, Satan, for it is written, ‘The Lord your God shall you worship and Him only shall you serve.’ Then the devil left Him; and behold, angels came and ministered to Him.

Lent

It is truly meet and just, right and for our salvation, that we should at all times, and in all places, give thanks unto Thee, O holy Lord, Father almighty, everlasting God; Who by this bodily fast, dost curb our vices, dost lift up our minds and bestow on us strength and rewards; through Christ our Lord. Through whom the Angels praise Thy Majesty, the Dominations worship it, the Powers stand in awe. The Heavens and the heavenly hosts together with the blessed Seraphim in triumphant chorus unite to celebrate it. Together with these we entreat Thee that Thou mayest bid our voices also to be admitted while we say with lowly praise:
