First Reading1 Samuel 1:9-20

From the First Book of Samuel

9So Hannah rose up after they had finished eatingand drinking in Shiloh. Now Eli the priest was sitting on his seat by the doorpost of the Lord’s temple.10She was in bitterness of soul, and prayed to the Lord, weeping bitterly.11She vowed a vow, and said,“Lord of Armies, if you will indeed look at the affliction of your servant and remember me,and not forget your servant, but will give to your servant a boy, then I will give him to the Lord all the days of his life, and no razor shall come on his head.”

12As she continued praying before the Lord,Eli saw her mouth.13Now Hannah spoke in her heart.Only her lips moved, but her voice was not heard. Therefore Eli thought she was drunk.14Eli said to her, “How long will you be drunk?Get rid of your wine!”

15Hannah answered, “No,my lord, I am a woman of a sorrowful spirit.I have not been drinking wine or strong drink, but I poured out my soul before the Lord.16Don’t consider your servant a wicked woman;for I have been speaking out of the abundance of my complaintand my provocation.”

17Then Eli answered, “Go in peace;and may the God of Israel grant your petitionthat you have asked of him.”

18She said, “Let your servant find favor in your sight.”So the woman went her way and ate;and her facial expression wasn’t sad any more.

19They rose up in the morning early and worshiped the Lord, then returned and came to their house to Ramah. Then Elkanah knew Hannah his wife;and the Lord remembered her.

20When the time had come, Hannah conceived, and bore a son;and she named him Samuel, saying, “Because I have asked him of the Lord.”

Responsorial Psalm1 Samuel 2:1, 4-5, 6-7, 8abcd

From the First Book of Samuel

1Hannah prayed, and said,

“My heart exults in the Lord!My horn is exalted in the Lord.My mouth is enlarged over my enemies, because I rejoice in your salvation.

4“The bows of the mighty men are broken. Those who stumbled are armed with strength.5Those who were full have hired themselves out for bread. Those who were hungry are satisfied.Yes, the barren has borne seven. She who has many children languishes.

6“The Lord kills and makes alive. He brings down to Sheol and brings up.7The Lord makes poor and makes rich.He brings low, he also lifts up.

8He raises up the poor out of the dust.He lifts up the needy from the dunghillto make them sit with princesand inherit the throne of glory. For the pillars of the earth are the Lord’s.He has set the world on them.

GospelMark 1:21-28

From the Gospel according to Mark

21They went into Capernaum, and immediately on the Sabbath day he entered into the synagogue and taught.22They were astonished at his teaching, for he taught them as having authority, and not as the scribes.23Immediately there was in their synagogue a man with an unclean spirit, and he cried out,24saying, “Ha!What do we have to do with you, Jesus, you Nazarene?Have you come to destroy us?I know who you are:the Holy One of God!”

25Jesus rebuked him, saying, “Be quiet, and come out of him!”

26The unclean spirit, convulsing himand crying with a loud voice, came out of him.27They were all amazed,so that they questioned among themselves, saying, “What is this? What can this new doctrine be?For with authority he commands even the unclean spirits, and they obey him!”28The report of him went out immediately into all the region of Galileeand its surrounding area.

EpistleLectio

Léctio Epístolæ beáti Pauli Apóstoli ad Romános.

Rom 12:1-5

From the Epistle of St. Paul to the Romans

Rom 12:1-5

Brethren: I exhort you, by the mercy of God, to present your bodies as a sacrifice, living, holy, pleasing to God - your spiritual service. And be not conformed to this world, but be transformed in the newness of your mind, that you may discern what is the good and acceptable and perfect will of God. By the grace that has been given to me, I say to each one among you: let no one rate himself more than he ought, but let him rate himself according to moderation, and according as God has apportioned to each one the measure of faith. For just as in one body we have many members, yet all the members have not the same function, so we, the many, are one body in Christ, but severally members, one of another, in Christ Jesus, our Lord.

Sequéntia ☩ sancti Evangélii secúndum Lucam.

Luc 2:42-52

Nesciebátis, quia in his, quæ Patris mei sunt, opórtet me esse?

Continuation of the Holy Gospel according to Luke

Luke 2:42-52

When Jesus was twelve years old, they went up to Jerusalem according to the custom of the feast. And after they had fulfilled the days, when there were returning, the Boy Jesus remained in Jerusalem, and His parents did not know it. But thinking that He was in the caravan, they had come a day’s journey before it occurred to them to look for Him among their relatives and acquaintances. And not finding Him, they returned to Jerusalem in search of Him. And it came to pass after three days, that they found Him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions. And all who were listening to Him were amazed at His understanding and His answers. And when they saw Him, they were astonished. And His Mother said to Him, Son, why have You done so to us? Behold, in sorrow Your father and I have been seeking You. And He said to them, How is it that you sought Me? Did you not know that I must be about My Father’s business? And they did not understand the word that He spoke to them. And He went down with them and came to Nazareth, and was subject to them; and His Mother kept all these things carefully in her heart. And Jesus advanced in wisdom and age and grace before God and men.

Epiphany

It is truly meet and just, right and availing unto salvation, that we should in all times and in all places give thanks unto Thee, O holy Lord, Father almighty and everlasting God. For when Thine only begotten Son showed Himself in the substance of our mortal nature, He restored us by the new light of His own immortality. And therefore with angels and archangels, with thrones and dominions, and with all the heavenly hosts, we sing a hymn to Thy glory, saying without ceasing:
