First ReadingExodus 19:1-2, 9-11, 16-20*

From the Book of Exodus

1In the third month after the children of Israel had gone out of the land of Egypt,on that same day they came into the wilderness of Sinai.2When they had departed from Rephidim, and had come to the wilderness of Sinai, they encamped in the wilderness;and there Israel encamped before the mountain. verses 3–8 are not read9The Lord said to Moses,“Behold, I come to you in a thick cloud, that the people may hear when I speak with you,and may also believe you forever.”Moses told the words of the people to the Lord.10The Lord said to Moses,“Go to the people, and sanctify them today and tomorrow, and let them wash their garments,11and be ready for the third day;for on the third day the Lord will come down in the sight of all the people on Mount Sinai.

verses 12–15 are not read16On the third day, when it was morning, there were thunders and lightnings, and a thick cloud on the mountain, and the sound of an exceedingly loud trumpet;and all the people who were in the camp trembled.17Moses led the people out of the camp to meet God;and they stood at the lower part of the mountain.18All of Mount Sinai smoked, because the Lord descended on it in fire;and its smoke ascended like the smoke of a furnace, and the whole mountain quaked greatly.19When the sound of the trumpet grew louder and louder,Moses spoke, and God answered him by a voice.20The Lord came down on Mount Sinai,to the top of the mountain. The Lord called Moses to the top of the mountain, and Moses went up.

Responsorial PsalmDaniel 3:52a, 52c, 53, 54, 55, 56*

52to be praised and exalted above all forever!

to be praised and exalted above all forever!

53Blessed are you in the temple of your holy glory,to be praised and glorified above all forever!

54Blessed are you on the throne of your kingdom,to be praised and extolled above all forever!

55Blessed are you who see the depthsand sit upon the cherubim,to be praised and exalted above all forever.

56Blessed are you in the firmament of heaven,to be praised and glorified forever!

GospelMatthew 13:10-17

From the Gospel according to Matthew

10The disciples came, and said to him, “Why do you speak to them in parables?”

11He answered them, “To you it is given to know the mysteries of the Kingdom of Heaven, but it is not given to them.12For whoever has, to him will be given, and he will have abundance;but whoever doesn’t have, from him will be taken away even that which he has.13Therefore I speak to them in parables, because seeing they don’t see,and hearing, they don’t hear, neither do they understand.14In them the prophecy of Isaiah is fulfilled, which says,

‘By hearing you will hear, and will in no way understand;Seeing you will see,and will in no way perceive;15for this people’s heart has grown callous, their ears are dull of hearing, and they have closed their eyes;or else perhaps they might perceive with their eyes, hear with their ears, understand with their heart, and would turn again, and I would heal them.’

16“But blessed are your eyes, for they see;and your ears, for they hear.17For most certainly I tell you that many prophetsand righteous men desired to see the things which you see,and didn’t see them;and to hear the things which you hear, and didn’t hear them.

EpistleLectio

Léctio Epístolæ beáti Pauli Apóstoli ad Romános

Rom 6:3-11

Fratres: Quicúmque baptizáti sumus in Christo Jesu, in morte ipsíus baptizáti sumus.

Lesson from the letter of St. Paul the Apostle to the Romans

Rom 6:3-11.

Brethren: All we who have been baptized into Christ Jesus have been baptized into His death. For we were buried with Him by means of Baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ has arisen from the dead through the glory of the Father, so we also may walk in newness of life. For if we have been united with Him in the likeness of His death, we shall be so in the likeness of His resurrection also. For we know that our old self has been crucified with Him, in order that the body of sin may be destroyed, that we may no longer be slaves to sin; for he who is dead is acquitted of sin. But if we have died with Christ, we believe that we shall also live together with Christ; for we know that Christ, having risen from the dead, dies now no more, death shall no longer have dominion over Him. For the death that He died, He died to sin once for all, but the life that He lives, He lives unto God. Thus do you consider yourselves also as dead to sin, but alive to God in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Sequéntia ☩ sancti Evangélii secúndum Marcum

Marc 8:1-9

Continuation ☩ of the Holy Gospel according to Mark

Mark 8:1-9

At that time, when there was a great crowd with Jesus, and they had nothing to eat, He called His disciples together and said to them, I have compassion on the crowd, for behold, they have now been with Me three days, and have nothing to eat; and if I send them away to their homes fasting, they will faint on the way, for some of them have come from a distance. And His disciples answered Him, How will anyone be able to satisfy these with bread, here in a desert? And He asked them, How many loaves have you? And they said, Seven. And He bade the crowd recline on the ground. Then taking the seven loaves, He gave thanks, broke them and gave them to His disciples to distribute; and they set them before the crowd. And they had a few little fishes; and He blessed them, and ordered them to be distributed. And they ate and were satisfied; and they took up what was left of the fragments, seven baskets. Now those who had eaten were about four thousand. And He dismissed them.
