First ReadingExodus 14:5-18

From the Book of Exodus

5The king of Egypt was told that the people had fled;and the heart of Pharaohand of his servants was changed toward the people, and they said, “What is this we have done, that we have let Israel go from serving us?”6He prepared his chariot, and took his army with him;7and he took six hundred chosen chariots, and all the chariots of Egypt, with captains over all of them.8The Lord hardened the heart of Pharaoh king of Egypt, and he pursued the children of Israel;for the children of Israel went out with a high hand.9The Egyptians pursued them. All the horses and chariots of Pharaoh, his horsemen, and his army overtook them encamping by the sea, beside Pihahiroth, before Baal Zephon.

10When Pharaoh came near, the children of Israel lifted up their eyes, and behold, the Egyptians were marching after them;and they were very afraid. The children of Israel cried out to the Lord.11They said to Moses,“Because there were no graves in Egypt, have you taken us away to die in the wilderness? Why have you treated us this way,to bring us out of Egypt?12Isn’t this the word that we spoke to you in Egypt, saying, ‘Leave us alone, that we may serve the Egyptians’?For it would have been better for us to serve the Egyptians than to die in the wilderness.”

13Moses said to the people, “Don’t be afraid.Stand still, and see the salvation of the Lord, which he will work for you today;for you will never again see the Egyptianswhom you have seen today.14The Lord will fight for you, and you shall be still.”

15The Lord said to Moses, “Why do you cry to me?Speak to the children of Israel, that they go forward.16Lift up your rod,and stretch out your hand over the sea and divide it.Then the children of Israel shall go into the middle of the sea on dry ground.17Behold, I myself will harden the hearts of the Egyptians, and they will go in after them.I will get myself honor over Pharaoh, and over all his armies, over his chariots, and over his horsemen.18The Egyptians shall know that I am the Lordwhen I have gotten myself honor over Pharaoh, over his chariots, and over his horsemen.”

Responsorial PsalmExodus 15:1bc-2, 3-4, 5-6

From the Book of Exodus

1Then Moses and the children of Israel sang this song to the Lord, and said,

“I will sing to the Lord, for he has triumphed gloriously. He has thrown the horse and his rider into the sea.2The Lord is my strength and song.He has become my salvation. This is my God, and I will praise him;my father’s God, and I will exalt him.

3The Lord is a man of war.The Lord is his name.4He has cast Pharaoh’s chariots and his army into the sea.His chosen captains are sunk in the Red Sea.

5The deeps cover them. They went down into the depths like a stone.6Your right hand, Lord, is glorious in power.Your right hand, Lord, dashes the enemy in pieces.

GospelMatthew 12:38-42

From the Gospel according to Matthew

38Then certain of the scribes and Pharisees answered,“Teacher, we want to see a sign from you.”

39But he answered them,“An evil and adulterous generation seeks after a sign, but no sign will be given to itbut the sign of Jonah the prophet.40For as Jonah was three daysand three nights in the belly of the huge fish,so will the Son of Man be three daysand three nights in the heart of the earth.41The men of Nineveh will stand up in the judgment with this generationand will condemn it,for they repented at the preaching of Jonah;and behold, someone greater than Jonah is here.42The Queen of the South will rise up in the judgment with this generationand will condemn it,for she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon;and behold, someone greater than Solomon is here.

Léctio Epístolæ beáti Pauli Apóstoli ad Corínthios

1 Cor 4:9-14

Lesson from the first letter of St Paul the Apostle to the Corinthians

1 Cor. 4:9-14

Brethren: We have been made a spectacle to the world, and to angels, and to men. We are fools for Christ, but you are wise in Christ! We are weak, but you are strong! You are honored, but we are without honor! To this very hour we hunger and thirst, and we are naked and buffeted, and have no fixed abode. And we toil, working with our own hands. We are reviled and we bless, we are persecuted and we bear with it, we are maligned and we entreat, we have become as the refuse of this world, the offscouring of all, even until now! I write these things not to put you to shame, but to admonish you as my dearest children, in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Sequéntia ☩ sancti Evangélii secúndum Lucam

Luc 10:1-9

Continuation ☩ of the Holy Gospel according to Luke

Luke 10:1-9

At that time, the Lord appointed seventy-two others, and sent them forth two by two before Him into every town and place where He Himself was about to come. And He said to them, The harvest indeed is great, but the laborers are few. Pray therefore the Lord of the harvest to send forth laborers into His harvest. Go. Behold, I send you forth as lambs in the midst of wolves. Carry neither purse, nor wallet, nor sandals, and greet no one on the way. Whatever house you enter, first say, ‘Peace to this house!’ And if a son of peace be there, your peace will rest upon him; but if not, it will return to you. And remain in the same house, eating and drinking what they have; for the laborer deserves his wages. Do not go from house to house. And whatever town you enter, and they receive you, eat what is set before you, and cure the sick who are there, and say to them, ‘The kingdom of God is at hand for you.’

It is truly meet and just, and profitable unto salvation, that we should at all times, and in all places, give thanks to Thee, O Holy Lord, Father Almighty, eternal God, through Christ, our Lord. Through whom the Angels praise Thy Majesty, the Dominions adore it, the Powers are in awe. Which the heavens and the hosts of heaven together with the blessed Seraphim joyfully do magnify. And do Thou command that it be permitted us to join with them in confessing Thee, while we say with lowly praise:
