First ReadingSirach 6:5-17

From the Book of Sirach

5Sweet words will multiply a man’s friends.A gracious tongue will multiply courtesies.6Let those that are at peace with you be many,but your advisers one of a thousand.7If you want to gain a friend, get him in a time of testing,and don’t be in a hurry to trust him.8For there is a friend just for an occasion.He won’t continue in the day of your affliction.9And there is a friend who turns into an enemy.He will discover strife to your reproach.10And there is a friend who is a companion at the table,but he won’t continue in the day of your affliction.11In your prosperity he will be as yourself,and will be bold over your servants.12If you are brought low, he will be against you,and will hide himself from your face.13Separate yourself from your enemies,and beware of your friends.14A faithful friend is a strong defense.He who has found him has found a treasure.15There is nothing that can be taken in exchange for a faithful friend.His excellency is beyond price.16A faithful friend is a life-saving medicine.Those who fear the Lord will find him.17He who fears the Lord directs his friendship properly;for as he is, so is his neighbor also.

Responsorial PsalmPsalm 119:12, 16, 18, 27, 34, 35

12Blessed are you, Lord.Teach me your statutes.

16I will delight myself in your statutes.I will not forget your word.

18Open my eyes,that I may see wondrous things out of your law.

27Let me understand the teaching of your precepts!Then I will meditate on your wondrous works.

34Give me understanding, and I will keep your law.Yes, I will obey it with my whole heart.

35Direct me in the path of your commandments,for I delight in them.

GospelMark 10:1-12

From the Gospel according to Mark

1He arose from there and came into the borders of Judeaand beyond the Jordan.Multitudes came together to him again.As he usually did, he was again teaching them.

2Pharisees came to him testing him,and asked him, “Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife?”

3He answered, “What did Moses command you?”

4They said, “Moses allowed a certificate of divorce to be written,and to divorce her.”

5But Jesus said to them,“For your hardness of heart,he wrote you this commandment.6But from the beginning of the creation,God made them male and female.7For this cause a man will leave his father and mother,and will join to his wife,8and the two will become one flesh,so that they are no longer two, but one flesh.9What therefore God has joined together,let no man separate.”

10In the house, his disciples asked him again about the same matter.11He said to them, “Whoever divorces his wifeand marries another commits adultery against her.12If a woman herself divorces her husbandand marries another,she commits adultery.”

Lesson from the book of Joel

Joel 2:23-24; 26-27

Thus says the Lord God: O children of Sion, exult and rejoice in the Lord, your God! He has given you the teacher of justice: He has made the rain come down for you, the early and the late rain as before. The threshing floors shall be full of grain and the vats shall overflow with wine and oil. You shall eat and be filled, and shall praise the name of the Lord, your God, because He has dealt wondrously with you; My people shall nevermore be put to shame. And you shall know that I am in the midst of Israel; I am the Lord, your God, and there is no other; My people shall nevermore be put to shame, says the Lord almighty.

Holy Spirit! Lord of light!

From Thy clear celestial height, Thy pure, beaming radiance give:

Come, Thou, Father of the poor!

Come, with treasures which endure!

Come, Thou light of all that live!

Thou of all consolers best,

Visiting the troubled breast,

Dost refreshing peace bestow:

Thou in toil art comfort sweet;

Pleasant coolness in the heat;

Solace in the midst of woe.

Light immortal! Light divine!

Visit Thou these hearts of Thine, And our inmost being fill.

If Thou take Thy grace away,

Nothing pure in man will stay;

All his good is turn’d to ill.

Heal our wounds - our strength renew;

On our dryness pour Thy dew;

Wash the stains of guilt away:

Bend the stubborn heart and will;

Melt the frozen, warm the chill;

Guide the steps that go astray.

Thou, on those who evermore

Thee confess and Thee adore,

In Thy sevenfold gifts descend.

Give them comfort when they die;

Give them life with Thee on high;

Give them joys which never end.

Amen. Alleluia.

Sequéntia ☩ sancti Evangélii secúndum Lucam

Luc 5:17-26

Continuation ☩ of the Holy Gospel according to Luke

Luke 5:17-26

At that time, it came to pass on one of the days, that Jesus sat teaching. And there were Pharisees and teachers of the Law sitting by, who had come out of every village of Galilee and Judea and out of Jerusalem. And the power of the Lord was present to heal them. And behold, some men were carrying upon a pallet a man who was paralyzed, and they were trying to bring him in and to lay him before Him. And as they found no way of bringing him in, because of the crowd, they went up onto the roof and lowered him through the tiles, with his pallet, into the midst before Jesus. And seeing their faith, He said, Man, your sins are forgiven you. And the Scribes and Pharisees began to argue, saying, Who is this man who speaks blasphemies? Who can forgive sins, but God only? But Jesus, knowing their thoughts, answered and said to them, “Why are you arguing in your hearts? Which is easier, to say, 'Your sins are forgiven you,' or to say, 'Arise and walk'?” But that you may know that the Son of Man has power on earth to forgive sins - He said to the paralytic - I say to you, arise, take up your pallet and go to your house. And immediately he arose before them, took up what he had been lying on, and went away to his house, glorifying God. And astonishment seized upon them all, and they glorified God and were filled with fear, saying, We have seen wonderful things today.
