First ReadingJeremiah 31:31-34*

From the Book of Jeremiah

31“Behold, the days come,”says the Lord, “that I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel, and with the house of Judah,32not according to the covenantthat I made with their fathers in the daythat I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt, which covenant of mine they broke, although I was a husband to them,” says the Lord.33“But this is the covenantthat I will make with the house of Israel after those days,” says the Lord:

“I will put my law in their inward parts, and I will write it in their heart.I will be their God,and they shall be my people.34They will no longer each teach his neighbor, and every man teach his brother, saying, ‘Know the Lord;’for they will all know me,from their least to their greatest,” says the Lord,“for I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more.”

Responsorial PsalmPsalm 51:12-13, 14-15, 18-19*

12Create in me a clean heart, O God.Renew a right spirit within me.13Don’t throw me from your presence, and don’t take your Holy Spirit from me.

14Restore to me the joy of your salvation.Uphold me with a willing spirit.15Then I will teach transgressors your ways.Sinners will be converted to you.

18For you don’t delight in sacrifice, or else I would give it.You have no pleasure in burnt offering.19The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit.O God, you will not despise a broken and contrite heart.

GospelMatthew 16:13-23

From the Gospel according to Matthew

13Now when Jesus came into the parts of Caesarea Philippi,he asked his disciples, saying, “Who do men say that I,the Son of Man, am?”

14They said, “Some say John the Baptizer, some, Elijah, and others,Jeremiah or one of the prophets.”

15He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?”

16Simon Peter answered,“You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.”

17Jesus answered him,“Blessed are you, Simon Bar Jonah, for flesh and blood has not revealed this to you,but my Father who is in heaven.18I also tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my assembly, and the gates of Hades will not prevail against it.19I will give to you the keys of the Kingdom of Heaven, and whatever you bind on earth will have been bound in heaven;and whatever you release on earth will have been released in heaven.”20Then he commanded the disciplesthat they should tell no one that he was Jesus the Christ.

21From that time, Jesus began to show his disciplesthat he must go to Jerusalemand suffer many things from the elders, chief priests, and scribes, and be killed, and the third day be raised up.

22Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him, saying, “Far be it from you, Lord! This will never be done to you.”

23But he turned and said to Peter, “Get behind me, Satan! You are a stumbling block to me,for you are not setting your mind on the things of God,but on the things of men.”
