First ReadingGenesis 22:1-2, 9a, 10-13, 15-18

From the Book of Genesis

1After these things,God tested Abraham, and said to him, “Abraham!”

He said, “Here I am.”

2He said, “Now take your son, your only son, Isaac, whom you love, and go into the land of Moriah.Offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountainswhich I will tell you of.” verses 3–8 are not read9They came to the place which God had told him of.Abraham built the altar there, and laid the wood in order, bound Isaac his son,and laid him on the altar, on the wood.10Abraham stretched out his hand, and took the knife to kill his son.

11The Lord’s angel called to him out of the sky,and said, “Abraham, Abraham!”

He said, “Here I am.”

12He said, “Don’t lay your hand on the boy or do anything to him.For now I know that you fear God,since you have not withheld your son, your only son, from me.”

13Abraham lifted up his eyes, and looked, and sawthat behind him was a ram caught in the thicket by his horns.Abraham went and took the ram,and offered him up for a burnt offering instead of his son.

verse 14 is not read15The Lord’s angel called to Abraham a second time out of the sky,16and said, “‘I have sworn by myself,’says the Lord, ‘because you have done this thing, and have not withheld your son, your only son,17that I will bless you greatly, and I will multiply your offspring greatly like the stars of the heavens, and like the sand which is on the seashore.Your offspring will possess the gate of his enemies.18All the nations of the earth will be blessed by your offspring, because you have obeyed my voice.’”

Responsorial PsalmPsalm 116:10, 15, 16-17, 18-19

10I believed, therefore I said,“I was greatly afflicted.”

15Precious in the Lord’s sight is the death of his saints.

16Lord, truly I am your servant.I am your servant, the son of your servant girl. You have freed me from my chains.17I will offer to you the sacrifice of thanksgiving, and will call on the Lord’s name.

18I will pay my vows to the Lord, yes, in the presence of all his people,19in the courts of the Lord’s house,in the middle of you, Jerusalem.Praise the Lord!

Second ReadingRomans 8:31b-34

From the Letter of Paul to the Romans

31What then shall we say about these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?32He who didn’t spare his own Son,but delivered him up for us all,how would he not also with him freely give us all things?33Who could bring a charge against God’s chosen ones?It is God who justifies.34Who is he who condemns? It is Christ who died, yes rather, who was raised from the dead, who is at the right hand of God,who also makes intercession for us.

GospelMark 9:2-10

From the Gospel according to Mark

2After six days Jesus took with him Peter,James, and John, and brought them up onto a high mountain privately by themselves, and he was changed into another form in front of them.3His clothing became glistening, exceedingly white, like snow, such as no launderer on earth can whiten them.4Elijah and Moses appeared to them, and they were talking with Jesus.

5Peter answered Jesus,“Rabbi, it is good for us to be here.Let’s make three tents:one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.”6For he didn’t know what to say, for they were very afraid.

7A cloud came, overshadowing them, and a voice came out of the cloud,“This is my beloved Son.Listen to him.”

8Suddenly looking around, they saw no one with them any more, except Jesus only.

9As they were coming down from the mountain,he commanded themthat they should tell no one what things they had seen, until after the Son of Man had risen from the dead.10They kept this saying to themselves, questioning what the “rising from the dead” meant.

Léctio Epístolæ beáti Pauli Apóstoli ad Thessalonicénses

1 Thess 4:1-7.

Lesson from the first Letter of St. Paul to the Thessalonians

1 Thess. 4:1-7

Brethren: Even as you have learned from us how you ought to walk to please God - as indeed you are walking - we beseech and exhort you in the Lord Jesus to make even greater progress. For you know what precepts I have given to you by the Lord Jesus. For this is the will of God, your sanctification; that you abstain from immorality; that every one of you learn how to possess his vessel in holiness and honor, not in the passion of lust like the Gentiles who do not know God; that no one transgress and overreach his brother in the matter, because the Lord is the avenger of all these things, as we have told you before and have testified. For God has not called us unto uncleanness, but unto holiness, in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Sequéntia ☩ sancti Evangélii secúndum Matthǽum

Matt 17:1-9

Continuation of the Holy Gospel according to Matthew

Matt 17:1-9

At that time, Jesus took Peter, James and his brother John, and led them up a high mountain by themselves, and was transfigured before them. And His face shone as the sun, and His garments became white as snow. And behold, there appeared to them Moses and Elias talking together with Him. Then Peter addressed Jesus, saying, Lord, it is good for us to be here. If You will, let us set up three tents here, one for You, one for Moses, and one for Elias. As he was still speaking, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them, and behold, a voice out of the cloud said, This is My beloved Son, in Whom I am well pleased; hear Him. And on hearing it the disciples fell on their faces and were exceedingly afraid. And Jesus came near and touched them, and said to them, Arise, and do not be afraid. But lifting up their eyes, they saw no one but Jesus only. And as they were coming down from the mountain, Jesus cautioned them, saying, Tell the vision to no one, till the Son of Man has risen from the dead.

Lent

It is truly meet and just, right and for our salvation, that we should at all times, and in all places, give thanks unto Thee, O holy Lord, Father almighty, everlasting God; Who by this bodily fast, dost curb our vices, dost lift up our minds and bestow on us strength and rewards; through Christ our Lord. Through whom the Angels praise Thy Majesty, the Dominations worship it, the Powers stand in awe. The Heavens and the heavenly hosts together with the blessed Seraphim in triumphant chorus unite to celebrate it. Together with these we entreat Thee that Thou mayest bid our voices also to be admitted while we say with lowly praise:
