First ReadingEphesians 4:7-16

From the Letter of Paul to the Ephesians

7But to each one of us,the grace was given according to the measure of the gift of Christ.8Therefore he says,

“When he ascended on high,he led captivity captive, and gave gifts to people.”

9Now this, “He ascended”,what is it butthat he also first descended into the lower parts of the earth?10He who descended is the onewho also ascended far above all the heavens, that he might fill all things.

11He gave some to be apostles;and some, prophets;and some, evangelists;and some, shepherds and teachers;12for the perfecting of the saints,to the work of serving,to the building up of the body of Christ,13until we all attain to the unity of the faithand of the knowledge of the Son of God,to a full grown man,to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ,14that we may no longer be children, tossed back and forthand carried about with every wind of doctrine,by the trickery of men,in craftiness, after the wiles of error;15but speaking truth in love,we may grow up in all things into himwho is the head, Christ,16from whom all the body, being fitted and knit together throughthat which every joint supplies, according to the working in measure of each individual part, makes the body increase to the building up of itself in love.

Responsorial PsalmPsalm 122:1-2, 3-4ab, 4cd-5

1I was glad when they said to me,“Let’s go to the Lord’s house!”2Our feet are standing within your gates, Jerusalem!

3Jerusalem is built as a city that is compact together,4where the tribes go up, even the Lord’s tribes,

4according to an ordinance for Israel,to give thanks to the Lord’s name.5For there are set thrones for judgment, the thrones of David’s house.

GospelLuke 13:1-9

From the Gospel according to Luke

1Now there were some present at the same timewho told him about the Galileans whose blood Pilate had mixed with their sacrifices.2Jesus answered them,“Do you thinkthat these Galileans were worse sinners than all the other Galileans, because they suffered such things?3I tell you, no, but unless you repent, you will all perish in the same way.4Or those eighteen onwhom the tower in Siloam fell and killed them—do you thinkthat they were worse offenders than all the menwho dwell in Jerusalem?5I tell you, no, but, unless you repent, you will all perish in the same way.”

6He spoke this parable.“A certain man had a fig tree planted in his vineyard, and he came seeking fruit on it and found none.7He said to the vine dresser,‘Behold, these three years I have come looking for fruit on this fig tree, and found none.Cut it down! Why does it waste the soil?’8He answered, ‘Lord, leave it alone this year also, until I dig around it and fertilize it.9If it bears fruit, fine;but if not, after that, you can cut it down.’”
