First ReadingJames 2:14-24, 26

From the Letter of James

14What good is it, my brothers,if a man says he has faith, but has no works? Can faith save him?15And if a brother or sister is nakedand in lack of daily food,16and one of you tells them, “Go in peace.Be warmed and filled;”yet you didn’t give them the things the body needs, what good is it?17Even so faith, if it has no works, is dead in itself.18Yes, a man will say, “You have faith, and I have works.”Show me your faith without works, and I will show you my faith by my works.

19You believe that God is one.You do well. The demons also believe—and shudder.20But do you want to know, vain man, that faith apart from works is dead?21Wasn’t Abraham our father justified by works,in that he offered up Isaac his son on the altar?22You see that faith worked with his works, and by works faith was perfected.23So the Scripture was fulfilled which says,“Abraham believed God,and it was accounted to him as righteousness,”and he was called the friend of God.24You see then that by works a man is justified, and not only by faith. verse 25 is not read26For as the body apart from the spirit is dead, even so faith apart from works is dead.

Responsorial PsalmPsalm 112:1-2, 3-4, 5-6

1Praise the Lord!Blessed is the man who fears the Lord, who delights greatly in his commandments.2His offspring will be mighty in the land. The generation of the upright will be blessed.

3Wealth and riches are in his house. His righteousness endures forever.4Light dawns in the darkness for the upright, gracious, merciful, and righteous.

5It is well with the man who deals graciously and lends. He will maintain his cause in judgment.6For he will never be shaken. The righteous will be remembered forever.

GospelMark 8:34—9:1

From the Gospel according to Mark

34He called the multitude to himself with his disciples and said to them,“Whoever wants to come after me,let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.35For whoever wants to save his life will lose it;and whoever will lose his life for my sakeand the sake of the Good News will save it.36For what does it profit a man to gain the whole worldand forfeit his life?37For what will a man give in exchange for his life?38For whoever will be ashamed of meand of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, the Son of Man also will be ashamed of himwhen he comes in his Father’s glory with the holy angels.”

1He said to them, “Most certainly I tell you, there are some standing herewho will in no way taste death until they see God’s Kingdom come with power.”

Léctio Epístolæ beáti Pauli Apóstoli ad Thessalonicénses

1 Thess 1:2-10

Lesson from the first letter of St. Paul the Apostle to the Thessalonians

1 Thess. 1:2-10

Brethren: We give thanks to God always for you all, continually making a remembrance of you in our prayers; being mindful before God our Father of your work of faith, and labor, and charity, and your enduring hope in our Lord Jesus Christ. We know, brethren, beloved of God, how you were chosen. For our Gospel was not delivered to you in word only, but in power also, and in the Holy Spirit, and in much fullness, as indeed you know what manner of men we have been among you for your sakes. And you became imitators of us and of the Lord, receiving the word in great tribulation, with joy of the Holy Spirit, so that you became a pattern to all the believers in Macedonia and in Achaia. For from you the word of the Lord has been spread abroad, not only in Macedonia and Achaia, but in every place your faith in God has gone forth, so that we need say nothing further. For they themselves report concerning us how we entered among you, and how you turned to God from idols, to serve the living and true God, and to await from heaven Jesus, His Son, Whom He raised from the dead, Who has delivered us from the wrath to come.

GospelEvangelium

Sequéntia ☩ sancti Evangélii secúndum Matthǽum.

Matt 13:31-35

Continuation of the Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew

Matt 13:31-35

At that time, Jesus spoke this parable to the crowds: The kingdom of heaven is like a grain of mustard seed, which a man took and sowed in his field. This indeed is the smallest of all the seeds; but when it grows up it is larger than any herb and becomes a tree, so that the birds of the air come and dwell in its branches. He told them another parable: The kingdom of heaven is like leaven, which a woman took and buried in three measures of flour, until all of it was leavened. All these things Jesus spoke to the crowds in parables, and without parables he did not speak to them; that what was spoken by the prophet might be fulfilled, I will open My mouth in parables, I will utter things hidden since the foundation of the world.

Common

It is truly meet and just, and profitable unto salvation, that we should at all times, and in all places, give thanks to Thee, O Holy Lord, Father Almighty, eternal God, through Christ, our Lord. Through whom the Angels praise Thy Majesty, the Dominions adore it, the Powers are in awe. Which the heavens and the hosts of heaven together with the blessed Seraphim joyfully do magnify. And do Thou command that it be permitted us to join with them in confessing Thee, while we say with lowly praise:
