First ReadingJeremiah 26:1-9

From the Book of Jeremiah

1In the beginning of the reign of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah, king of Judah, this word came from the Lord:2“The Lord says:‘Stand in the court of the Lord’s house, and speak to all the cities of Judahwhich come to worship in the Lord’s house, all the words that I command you to speak to them.Don’t omit a word.3It may be they will listen, and every man turn from his evil way, that I may relent from the evilwhich I intend to do to thembecause of the evil of their doings.’”4You shall tell them, “The Lord says:‘If you will not listen to me,to walk in my law which I have set before you,5to listen to the words of my servants the prophets whom I send to you, even rising up early and sending them—but you have not listened—6then I will make this house like Shiloh, and will make this city a curse to all the nations of the earth.’”

7The priests and the prophetsand all the people heard Jeremiah speaking these words in the Lord’s house.8When Jeremiah had finished speaking allthat the Lord had commanded him to speak to all the people, the priests and the prophetsand all the people seized him, saying, “You shall surely die!9Why have you prophesied in the Lord’s name, saying, ‘This house will be like Shiloh, and this city will be desolate, without inhabitant’?”All the people were crowded around Jeremiah in the Lord’s house.

Responsorial PsalmPsalm 69:5, 8-10, 14

5Those who hate me without a cause are more than the hairs of my head. Those who want to cut me off, being my enemies wrongfully, are mighty.I have to restore what I didn’t take away.

8Because for your sake, I have borne reproach.Shame has covered my face.9I have become a stranger to my brothers,an alien to my mother’s children.10For the zeal of your house consumes me.The reproaches of those who reproach you have fallen on me.

14But as for me, my prayer is to you, Lord, in an acceptable time.God, in the abundance of your loving kindness, answer me in the truth of your salvation.

GospelMatthew 13:54-58

From the Gospel according to Matthew

54Coming into his own country,he taught them in their synagogue,so that they were astonished and said,“Where did this man get this wisdomand these mighty works?55Isn’t this the carpenter’s son?Isn’t his mother called Mary, and his brothers James,Joses, Simon, and Judas?56Aren’t all of his sisters with us?Where then did this man get all of these things?”57They were offended by him.

But Jesus said to them,“A prophet is not without honor, except in his own country and in his own house.”58He didn’t do many mighty works therebecause of their unbelief.

EpistleLectio

Léctio Epístolæ beáti Pauli Apóstoli ad Romános

Rom 6:3-11

Fratres: Quicúmque baptizáti sumus in Christo Jesu, in morte ipsíus baptizáti sumus.

Lesson from the letter of St. Paul the Apostle to the Romans

Rom 6:3-11.

Brethren: All we who have been baptized into Christ Jesus have been baptized into His death. For we were buried with Him by means of Baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ has arisen from the dead through the glory of the Father, so we also may walk in newness of life. For if we have been united with Him in the likeness of His death, we shall be so in the likeness of His resurrection also. For we know that our old self has been crucified with Him, in order that the body of sin may be destroyed, that we may no longer be slaves to sin; for he who is dead is acquitted of sin. But if we have died with Christ, we believe that we shall also live together with Christ; for we know that Christ, having risen from the dead, dies now no more, death shall no longer have dominion over Him. For the death that He died, He died to sin once for all, but the life that He lives, He lives unto God. Thus do you consider yourselves also as dead to sin, but alive to God in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Sequéntia ☩ sancti Evangélii secúndum Marcum

Marc 8:1-9

Continuation ☩ of the Holy Gospel according to Mark

Mark 8:1-9

At that time, when there was a great crowd with Jesus, and they had nothing to eat, He called His disciples together and said to them, I have compassion on the crowd, for behold, they have now been with Me three days, and have nothing to eat; and if I send them away to their homes fasting, they will faint on the way, for some of them have come from a distance. And His disciples answered Him, How will anyone be able to satisfy these with bread, here in a desert? And He asked them, How many loaves have you? And they said, Seven. And He bade the crowd recline on the ground. Then taking the seven loaves, He gave thanks, broke them and gave them to His disciples to distribute; and they set them before the crowd. And they had a few little fishes; and He blessed them, and ordered them to be distributed. And they ate and were satisfied; and they took up what was left of the fragments, seven baskets. Now those who had eaten were about four thousand. And He dismissed them.
