First ReadingSirach 39:6-10

From the Book of Sirach

6If the great Lord wills,he will be filled with the spirit of understanding;he will pour forth the words of his wisdomand in prayer give thanks to the Lord.7He will direct his counsel and knowledge, and he will meditate in his secrets.8He will show the instruction which he has been taughtand will glory in the law of the covenant of the Lord.9Many will commend his understanding. So long as the world endures, it won’t be blotted out.His memory won’t depart. His name will live from generation to generation.10Nations will declare his wisdom. The congregation will proclaim his praise.

Responsorial PsalmPsalm 116:12-19

12What will I give to the Lord for all his benefits toward me?13I will take the cup of salvation, and call on the Lord’s name.14I will pay my vows to the Lord, yes, in the presence of all his people.15Precious in the Lord’s sight is the death of his saints.16Lord, truly I am your servant.I am your servant, the son of your servant girl. You have freed me from my chains.17I will offer to you the sacrifice of thanksgiving, and will call on the Lord’s name.18I will pay my vows to the Lord, yes, in the presence of all his people,19in the courts of the Lord’s house,in the middle of you, Jerusalem.Praise the Lord!

Second Reading2 Timothy 4:1-8

From the Second Letter of Paul to Timothy

1I command you therefore before Godand the Lord Jesus Christ, who will judge the livingand the dead at his appearing and his Kingdom:2preach the word;be urgent in season and out of season;reprove, rebuke, and exhort with all patience and teaching.3For the time will comewhen they will not listen to the sound doctrine, but having itching ears, will heap up for themselves teachers after their own lusts,4and will turn away their ears from the truth, and turn away to fables.5But you be sober in all things, suffer hardship, do the work of an evangelist, and fulfill your ministry.

6For I am already being offered, and the time of my departure has come.7I have fought the good fight.I have finished the course.I have kept the faith.8From now on, the crown of righteousness is stored up for me,which the Lord, the righteous judge, will give to me on that day;and not to me only, but also to all those who have loved his appearing.

GospelMatthew 13:24-32

From the Gospel according to Matthew

24He set another parable before them, saying, “The Kingdom of Heaven is like a manwho sowed good seed in his field,25but while people slept, his enemy cameand sowed darnel weeds also among the wheat, and went away.26But when the blade sprang up and produced grain, then the darnel weeds appeared also.27The servants of the householder came and said to him,‘Sir, didn’t you sow good seed in your field?Where did these darnel weeds come from?’

28“He said to them, ‘An enemy has done this.’

“The servants asked him,‘Do you want us to go and gather them up?’

29“But he said, ‘No,lest perhaps while you gather up the darnel weeds, you root up the wheat with them.30Let both grow together until the harvest, and in the harvest time I will tell the reapers,“First, gather up the darnel weeds, and bind them in bundles to burn them;but gather the wheat into my barn.”’”

31He set another parable before them, saying, “The Kingdom of Heaven is like a grain of mustard seed which a man took, and sowed in his field,32which indeed is smaller than all seeds. But when it is grown,it is greater than the herbs and becomes a tree,so that the birds of the air comeand lodge in its branches.”

Léctio libri Regum

3 Reg 3:16-28.

Lesson from the book of Kings

3 Kings 3:16-28

In those days, there came two women who were harlots, to king Solomon, and stood before him, and one of them said, I beseech you, my lord; I and this woman dwelt in one house, and I was delivered of a child with her in the chamber. And the third day after that I was delivered, she also was delivered; and we were together, and no other person with us in the house, only we two. And this woman’s child died in the night; for in her sleep she overlaid him. And rising in the dead time of the night, she took my child from my side, while I, your handmaid, was asleep, and laid it in her bosom; and laid her dead child in my bosom. And when I rose in the morning to give my child suck, behold it was dead; but considering him more diligently when it was clear day, I found it was not mine which I bore. And the other woman answered, It is not so as you say, but your child is dead and mine is alive. On the contrary she said, You lie; for my child lives and your child is dead. And in this manner they strove before the king. Then said the king, The one says: ‘My child is alive, and your child is dead.’ And the other answers: ‘No, but your child is dead, and mine lives.’ The king therefore said, Bring me a sword. And when they had brought a sword before the king, Divide, said he, the living child in two, and give half to the one, and half to the other. But the woman whose child was alive said to the king - for her heart was moved for her child, - I beseech you, my lord, give her the child alive, and do not kill it. But the other said, Let it neither be mine nor yours, but divide it. The king answered and said, Give the living child to this woman, and let it not be killed; for she is the mother thereof. And all Israel heard the judgment which the king had judged, and they feared the king, seeing that the wisdom of God was in him to do judgment.

Sequéntia ☩ sancti Evangélii secúndum Joánnem

Joann 2:13-25

Continuation of the Holy Gospel according to John

John 2:13-25

At that time, the Passover of the Jews was at hand, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. And He found in the temple men selling oxen, sheep and doves, and money-changers at their tables. And making a kind of whip of cords, He drove them all out of the temple, also the sheep and oxen, and He poured out the money of the changers and overturned the tables. And to them who were selling the doves He said, Take these things away, and do not make the house of My Father a house of business. And His disciples remembered that it is written, The zeal of Your house has eaten Me up. The Jews therefore answered and said to Him, What sign do You show us, seeing that You do these things? In answer Jesus said to them, Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up. The Jews therefore said, Forty-six years has this temple been in building, and will You raise it up in three days? But He was speaking of the temple of His body. When, accordingly, He had risen from the dead, His disciples remembered that He had said this, and they believed the Scripture and the word that Jesus had spoken. Now when He was at Jerusalem for the feast of the Passover, many believed in His name, seeing the signs that He was working. But Jesus did not trust Himself to them, in that He knew all men, and because He had no need that anyone should bear witness concerning man, for He Himself knew what was in man.

It is truly meet and just, right and for our salvation, that we should at all times, and in all places, give thanks unto Thee, O holy Lord, Father almighty, everlasting God; Who by this bodily fast, dost curb our vices, dost lift up our minds and bestow on us strength and rewards; through Christ our Lord. Through whom the Angels praise Thy Majesty, the Dominations worship it, the Powers stand in awe. The Heavens and the heavenly hosts together with the blessed Seraphim in triumphant chorus unite to celebrate it. Together with these we entreat Thee that Thou mayest bid our voices also to be admitted while we say with lowly praise:
