From the Second Book of Samuel

9Absalom happened to meet David’s servants.Absalom was riding on his mule, and the mule went under the thick boughs of a great oak;and his head caught hold of the oak,and he was hanging between the sky and earth;and the mule that was under him went on.10A certain man saw it,and told Joab, and said,“Behold, I saw Absalom hanging in an oak.”

verses 11–13 are not read14Then Joab said, “I’m not going to wait like this with you.”He took three darts in his handand thrust them through Absalom’s heartwhile he was still alive in the middle of the oak.

verses 15–23 are not read24Now David was sitting between the two gates;and the watchman went up to the roof of the gate to the wall, and lifted up his eyes and looked, and, behold, a man running alone.25The watchman shouted and told the king. The king said, “If he is alone, there is news in his mouth.”He came closer and closer.

verses 26–29 are not read30The king said, “Come and stand here.”He came and stood still.

31Behold, the Cushite came. The Cushite said, “Good news for my lord the king, for the Lord has avenged you today of all thosewho rose up against you.”

32The king said to the Cushite,“Is it well with the young man Absalom?”

The Cushite answered,“May the enemies of my lord the king, and all who rise up against you to do you harm,be as that young man is.”

1The king was much moved, and went up to the room over the gate and wept.As he went, he said, “My son Absalom! My son, my son Absalom!I wish I had died instead of you,Absalom, my son, my son!”

2Joab was told, “Behold, the king weeps and mourns for Absalom.”3The victory that day was turned into mourning among all the people, for the people heard it said that day,“The king grieves for his son.”

Responsorial PsalmPsalm 86:1-2, 3-4, 5-6

1Hear, Lord, and answer me,for I am poor and needy.2Preserve my soul, for I am godly. You, my God, save your servant who trusts in you.

3Be merciful to me, Lord, for I call to you all day long.4Bring joy to the soul of your servant, for to you, Lord, do I lift up my soul.

5For you, Lord, are good, and ready to forgive, abundant in loving kindness to all those who call on you.6Hear, Lord, my prayer.Listen to the voice of my petitions.

GospelMark 5:21-43

From the Gospel according to Mark

21When Jesus had crossed back over in the boat to the other side,a great multitude was gathered to him;and he was by the sea.22Behold, one of the rulers of the synagogue,Jairus by name, came;and seeing him, he fell at his feet23and begged him much, saying, “My little daughter is at the point of death. Please come and lay your hands on her, that she may be made healthy, and live.”

24He went with him, and a great multitude followed him,and they pressed upon him on all sides.25A certain womanwho had a discharge of blood for twelve years,26and had suffered many things by many physicians, and had spent all that she had,and was no better, but rather grew worse,27having heard the things concerning Jesus, came up behind him in the crowd and touched his clothes.28For she said, “If I just touch his clothes,I will be made well.”29Immediately the flow of her blood was dried up,and she felt in her bodythat she was healed of her affliction.

30Immediately Jesus, perceiving in himselfthat the power had gone out from him, turned around in the crowd and asked,“Who touched my clothes?”

31His disciples said to him,“You see the multitude pressing against you,and you say, ‘Who touched me?’”

32He looked around to see her who had done this thing.33But the woman, fearing and trembling, knowing what had been done to her, came and fell down before him,and told him all the truth.

34He said to her, “Daughter, your faith has made you well.Go in peace, and be cured of your disease.”

35While he was still speaking, people came from the synagogue ruler’s house, saying, “Your daughter is dead. Why bother the Teacher any more?”

36But Jesus, when he heard the message spoken, immediately said to the ruler of the synagogue,“Don’t be afraid, only believe.”37He allowed no one to follow him except Peter,James, and John the brother of James.38He came to the synagogue ruler’s house, and he saw an uproar, weeping, and great wailing.39When he had entered in,he said to them, “Why do you make an uproar and weep? The child is not dead, but is asleep.”

40They ridiculed him.But he, having put them all out, took the father of the child, her mother, and those who were with him,and went in where the child was lying.41Taking the child by the hand,he said to her, “Talitha cumi!”which means, being interpreted,“Girl, I tell you, get up!”42Immediately the girl rose up and walked, for she was twelve years old. They were amazed with great amazement.43He strictly ordered them that no one should know this, and commandedthat something should be given to her to eat.

Léctio Epístolæ beáti Pauli Apóstoli ad Corinthios

1 Cor 1:26-31

Lesson from the first letter of St. Paul the Apostle to the Corinthians

1 Cor. 1:26-31

Brethren: Consider your own call, that there were not many wise according to the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble. But the foolish things of the world has God chosen to put to shame the wise, and the weak things of the world has God chosen to put to shame the strong, and the base things of the world and the despised has God chosen, and the things that are not, to bring to naught the things that are; lest any flesh should pride itself before Him. From Him you are in Christ Jesus, Who has become for us God-given wisdom, and justice, and sanctification, and redemption; so that, just as it is written, Let him who takes pride, take pride in the Lord.

GospelEvangelium

Sequéntia ☩ sancti Evangélii secúndum Matthǽum

Matt 19:3-12

Continuation ☩ of the Holy Gospel according to Matthew

Matt 19:3-12.

At that time, there came to Jesus some Pharisees, testing Him, and saying, Is it lawful for a man to put away his wife for any cause? But He answered and said to them, Have you not read that the Creator, from the beginning, made them male and female, and said, ‘For this cause a man shall leave his father and mother, and cleave to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh’? Therefore now they are no longer two, but one flesh. What therefore God has joined together, let no man put asunder. They said to Him, Why then did Moses command to give a written notice of dismissal, and to put her away? He said to them, Because Moses, by reason of the hardness of your heart, permitted you to put away your wives; but it was not so from the beginning. And I say to you, that whoever puts away his wife, except for immorality, and marries another, commits adultery; and he who marries a woman who has been put away commits adultery. His disciples said to Him, If the case of a man with his wife is so, it is not expedient to marry. And He said, Not all can accept this teaching; but those to whom it has been given. For there are eunuchs who were born so from their mother’s womb; and there are eunuchs who were made so by men; and there are eunuchs who have made themselves so for the sake of the kingdom of heaven. Let him accept it who can.
