First ReadingJames 2:14-24, 26

From the Letter of James

14What good is it, my brothers,if a man says he has faith, but has no works?Can faith save him?15And if a brother or sister is nakedand in lack of daily food,16and one of you tells them, “Go in peace.Be warmed and filled;”yet you didn’t give them the things the body needs, what good is it?17Even so faith, if it has no works, is dead in itself.18Yes, a man will say, “You have faith, and I have works.”Show me your faith without works,and I will show you my faith by my works.

19You believe that God is one.You do well.The demons also believe—and shudder.20But do you want to know,vain man, that faith apart from works is dead?21Wasn’t Abraham our father justified by works,in that he offered up Isaac his son on the altar?22You see that faith worked with his works,and by works faith was perfected.23So the Scripture was fulfilled which says,“Abraham believed God,and it was accounted to him as righteousness,”and he was called the friend of God.24You see then that by works a man is justified,and not only by faith. verse 25 is not read26For as the body apart from the spirit is dead,even so faith apart from works is dead.

Responsorial PsalmPsalm 112:1-2, 3-4, 5-6

1Praise the Lord!Blessed is the man who fears the Lord,who delights greatly in his commandments.2His offspring will be mighty in the land.The generation of the upright will be blessed.

3Wealth and riches are in his house.His righteousness endures forever.4Light dawns in the darkness for the upright,gracious, merciful, and righteous.

5It is well with the man who deals graciously and lends.He will maintain his cause in judgment.6For he will never be shaken.The righteous will be remembered forever.

GospelMark 8:34—9:1

From the Gospel according to Mark

34He called the multitude to himself with his disciples and said to them,“Whoever wants to come after me,let him deny himself,and take up his cross, and follow me.35For whoever wants to save his life will lose it;and whoever will lose his life for my sakeand the sake of the Good News will save it.36For what does it profit a man to gain the whole worldand forfeit his life?37For what will a man give in exchange for his life?38For whoever will be ashamed of meand of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation,the Son of Man also will be ashamed of himwhen he comes in his Father’s glory with the holy angels.”

1He said to them, “Most certainly I tell you,there are some standing herewho will in no way taste death until they see God’s Kingdom come with power.”

Lesson from the book of Joel

Joel 2:23-24; 26-27

Thus says the Lord God: O children of Sion, exult and rejoice in the Lord, your God! He has given you the teacher of justice: He has made the rain come down for you, the early and the late rain as before. The threshing floors shall be full of grain and the vats shall overflow with wine and oil. You shall eat and be filled, and shall praise the name of the Lord, your God, because He has dealt wondrously with you; My people shall nevermore be put to shame. And you shall know that I am in the midst of Israel; I am the Lord, your God, and there is no other; My people shall nevermore be put to shame, says the Lord almighty.

Holy Spirit! Lord of light!

From Thy clear celestial height, Thy pure, beaming radiance give:

Come, Thou, Father of the poor!

Come, with treasures which endure!

Come, Thou light of all that live!

Thou of all consolers best,

Visiting the troubled breast,

Dost refreshing peace bestow:

Thou in toil art comfort sweet;

Pleasant coolness in the heat;

Solace in the midst of woe.

Light immortal! Light divine!

Visit Thou these hearts of Thine, And our inmost being fill.

If Thou take Thy grace away,

Nothing pure in man will stay;

All his good is turn’d to ill.

Heal our wounds - our strength renew;

On our dryness pour Thy dew;

Wash the stains of guilt away:

Bend the stubborn heart and will;

Melt the frozen, warm the chill;

Guide the steps that go astray.

Thou, on those who evermore

Thee confess and Thee adore,

In Thy sevenfold gifts descend.

Give them comfort when they die;

Give them life with Thee on high;

Give them joys which never end.

Amen. Alleluia.

Sequéntia ☩ sancti Evangélii secúndum Lucam

Luc 5:17-26

Continuation ☩ of the Holy Gospel according to Luke

Luke 5:17-26

At that time, it came to pass on one of the days, that Jesus sat teaching. And there were Pharisees and teachers of the Law sitting by, who had come out of every village of Galilee and Judea and out of Jerusalem. And the power of the Lord was present to heal them. And behold, some men were carrying upon a pallet a man who was paralyzed, and they were trying to bring him in and to lay him before Him. And as they found no way of bringing him in, because of the crowd, they went up onto the roof and lowered him through the tiles, with his pallet, into the midst before Jesus. And seeing their faith, He said, Man, your sins are forgiven you. And the Scribes and Pharisees began to argue, saying, Who is this man who speaks blasphemies? Who can forgive sins, but God only? But Jesus, knowing their thoughts, answered and said to them, “Why are you arguing in your hearts? Which is easier, to say, 'Your sins are forgiven you,' or to say, 'Arise and walk'?” But that you may know that the Son of Man has power on earth to forgive sins - He said to the paralytic - I say to you, arise, take up your pallet and go to your house. And immediately he arose before them, took up what he had been lying on, and went away to his house, glorifying God. And astonishment seized upon them all, and they glorified God and were filled with fear, saying, We have seen wonderful things today.
