The washing of the feet takes place after the homily, though it may be done at some other time to-day. The celebrant girds himself with a cloth, and assisted by his ministers, begins the washing of the feet of twelve men chosen for the ceremony. While the subdeacon holds the right foot of each of those whose feet are to be washed, the celebrant, kneeling before him, washes the foot and wipes it, the deacon handing him a towel for the wiping. Meanwhile the following chants are sung:

After the Maundy, the officiating priest washes his hands. Then returning to the place whence he came he puts on maniple and chasuble and standing with his head uncovered, he says:
