First Reading2 Samuel 24:2, 9-17

From the Second Book of Samuel

2The king said to Joab the captain of the army, who was with him, “Now go backand forth through all the tribes of Israel, from Dan even to Beersheba, and count the people, that I may know the sum of the people.” verses 3–8 are not read9Joab gave up the sum of the counting of the people to the king;and there were in Israel eight hundred thousand valiant men who drew the sword, and the men of Judah were five hundred thousand men.

10David’s heart struck him after he had counted the people.David said to the Lord,“I have sinned greatly in that which I have done. But now, the Lord, put away, I beg you,the iniquity of your servant;for I have done very foolishly.”

11When David rose up in the morning, the Lord’s word came to the prophet Gad,David’s seer, saying,12“Go and speak to David,‘The Lord says, “I offer you three things.Choose one of them, that I may do it to you.”’”

13So Gad came to David, and told him, saying,“Shall seven years of famine come to you in your land?Or will you flee three months before your foeswhile they pursue you?Or shall there be three days’ pestilence in your land? Now answer, and consider what answer I shall return to him who sent me.”

14David said to Gad, “I am in distress.Let us fall now into the Lord’s hand, for his mercies are great.Let me not fall into man’s hand.”

15So the Lord sent a pestilence on Israel from the morning even to the appointed time;and seventy thousand men died of the people from Dan even to Beersheba.16When the angel stretched out his hand toward Jerusalem to destroy it,the Lord relented of the disaster, and said to the angelwho destroyed the people, “It is enough. Now withdraw your hand.”The Lord’s angel was by the threshing floor of Araunah the Jebusite.

17David spoke to the Lordwhen he saw the angel who struck the people, and said, “Behold,I have sinned, and I have done perversely;but these sheep, what have they done? Please let your hand be against me,and against my father’s house.”

Responsorial PsalmPsalm 32:1-2, 5, 6, 7

1Blessed is he whose disobedience is forgiven, whose sin is covered.2Blessed is the man to whom the Lord doesn’t impute iniquity,in whose spirit there is no deceit.

5I acknowledged my sin to you.I didn’t hide my iniquity.I said, I will confess my transgressions to the Lord, and you forgave the iniquity of my sin.

6For this, let everyone who is godly pray to you in a time when you may be found.Surely when the great waters overflow, they shall not reach to him.

7You are my hiding place. You will preserve me from trouble. You will surround me with songs of deliverance.

GospelMark 6:1-6

From the Gospel according to Mark

1He went out from there. He came into his own country, and his disciples followed him.2When the Sabbath had come,he began to teach in the synagogue, and many hearing him were astonished, saying, “Where did this man get these things?”and, “What is the wisdom that is given to this man, that such mighty works come about by his hands?3Isn’t this the carpenter, the son of Mary and brother of James,Joses, Judah, and Simon?Aren’t his sisters here with us?”So they were offended at him.

4Jesus said to them,“A prophet is not without honor, except in his own country, and among his own relatives, and in his own house.”5He could do no mighty work there, except that he laid his hands on a few sick people and healed them.6He marveled because of their unbelief.

He went around the villages teaching.

EpistleLectio

Léctio Epistolæ beáti Pauli Apóstoli ad Romános

Rom 8:35-39

Fratres: Quis nos separábit a caritáte Christi: tribulátio, an angustia, an fames, an núditas, an perículum, an persecútio, an gládius? sicut scriptum est: Quia propter te mortificámur tota die: æstimáti sumus sicut oves occisiónis.

Lesson from the letter of St. Paul the Apostle to the Romans

Rom 8:35-39

Brethren, who shall separate us from the love of Christ? shall tribulation? or distress? or famine? Or nakedness? or danger? Or persecution? or the sword? As it is written: For Thy sake we are put to death all the day long: we are accounted as sheep for the slaughter. But in all these things we overcome because of Him that hath loved us. For I am sure that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor might, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

GospelEvangelium

Sequéntia ☩ sancti Evangélii secúndum Joánnem

Joann 12:24-26

Continuation ☩ of the Holy Gospel according to John

John 12:24-26

At that time, Jesus said to His Disciples, “Amen, amen, I say to you, unless the grain of wheat falls into the ground and dies, it remains alone. But if it dies, it brings forth much fruit. He who loves his life, loses it; and he who hates his life in this world, keeps it unto life everlasting. If anyone serves Me, let him follow Me; and where I am there also shall My servant be. If anyone serves Me, My Father will honor him.”

It is truly meet and just, and profitable unto salvation, that we should at all times, and in all places, give thanks to Thee, O Holy Lord, Father Almighty, eternal God, through Christ, our Lord. Through whom the Angels praise Thy Majesty, the Dominions adore it, the Powers are in awe. Which the heavens and the hosts of heaven together with the blessed Seraphim joyfully do magnify. And do Thou command that it be permitted us to join with them in confessing Thee, while we say with lowly praise:
