First Reading1 Thessalonians 4:13-18

From the First Letter of Paul to the Thessalonians

13But we don’t want you to be ignorant, brothers, concerning those who have fallen asleep,so that you don’t grieve like the rest, who have no hope.14For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so God will bring with him thosewho have fallen asleep in Jesus.15For this we tell you by the word of the Lord, that we who are alive, who are left until the coming of the Lord, will in no way precede those who have fallen asleep.16For the Lord himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel and with God’s trumpet. The dead in Christ will rise first,17then we who are alive, who are left, will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air.So we will be with the Lord forever.18Therefore comfort one another with these words.

Responsorial PsalmPsalm 96:1 and 3, 4-5, 11-12, 13

1Sing to the Lord a new song!Sing to the Lord, all the earth.3Declare his glory among the nations, his marvelous works among all the peoples.

4For the Lord is great, and greatly to be praised! He is to be feared above all gods.5For all the gods of the peoples are idols, but the Lord made the heavens.

11Let the heavens be glad, and let the earth rejoice.Let the sea roar, and its fullness!12Let the field and all that is in it exult! Then all the trees of the woods shall sing for joy

13before the Lord; for he comes, for he comes to judge the earth. He will judge the world with righteousness, the peoples with his truth.

GospelLuke 4:16-30

From the Gospel according to Luke

16He came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up.He entered, as was his custom, into the synagogue on the Sabbath day,and stood up to read.17The book of the prophet Isaiah was handed to him.He opened the book, and found the place where it was written,

18“The Spirit of the Lord is on me,because he has anointed me to preach good news to the poor.He has sent me to heal the broken hearted,to proclaim release to the captives, recovering of sight to the blind,to deliver those who are crushed,19and to proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord.”

20He closed the book, gave it back to the attendant, and sat down. The eyes of all in the synagogue were fastened on him.21He began to tell them,“Today, this Scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing.”

22All testified about him and wondered at the gracious wordswhich proceeded out of his mouth;and they said, “Isn’t this Joseph’s son?”

23He said to them, “Doubtless you will tell me this proverb,‘Physician, heal yourself!Whatever we have heard done at Capernaum,do also here in your hometown.’”24He said, “Most certainly I tell you,no prophet is acceptable in his hometown.25But truly I tell you, there were many widows in Israel in the days of Elijah, when the sky was shut up three years and six months, when a great famine came over all the land.26Elijah was sent to none of them, except to Zarephath,in the land of Sidon,to a woman who was a widow.27There were many lepers in Israel in the time of Elisha the prophet, yet not one of them was cleansed, except Naaman, the Syrian.”

28They were all filled with wrath in the synagogue as they heard these things.29They rose up, threw him out of the city, and led him to the brow of the hillthat their city was built on,that they might throw him off the cliff.30But he, passing through the middle of them, went his way.

Eccli 31:8-11

Lesson from the book of Ecclesiasticus

Sir 31:8-11

Happy the man found without fault, who turns not aside after gain, nor puts his trust in money nor in treasures! Who is he, that we may praise him? For he has done wonders in his life. He has been tested by gold and come off safe, and this remains his glory forever; he could have sinned but did not, could have done evil but would not, so that his possessions are secure in the Lord, and the assembly of the Saints shall recount his alms.

Sequéntia ☩ sancti Evangélii secúndum Lucam

Luc 19:12-26

In illo témpore: Dixit Jesus discípulis suis parábolam hanc: Homo quidam nóbilis ábiit in regionem longínquam accípere sibi regnum, et revérti.

Continuation ☩ of the Holy Gospel according to Luke

Luke 19:12-26

At that time, Jesus spoke this parable to His disciples: A certain nobleman went into a far country to obtain for himself a kingdom and then return. And having summoned ten of his servants, he gave them ten gold pieces and said to them, ‘Trade till I come.’ But his citizens hated him; and they sent a delegation after him to say, ‘We do not wish this man to be king over us.’ And it came to pass when he had returned, after receiving the kingdom, that he ordered the servants to whom he had given the money to be called to him in order that he might learn how much each one had made by trading. And the first came, saying, ‘Lord, your gold piece has earned ten gold pieces.’ And he said to him, ‘Well done, good servant; because you have been faithful in a very little, you shall have authority over ten towns.’ Then the second came, saying, ‘Lord, your gold piece has made five gold pieces.’ And he said to him, ‘Be you also over five towns.’ And another came, saying, ‘Lord, behold your gold piece, which I have kept laid up in a napkin; for I feared you, because you are a stern man. You take up what you did not sow.’ He said to him, ‘Out of your own mouth I judge you, you wicked servant. You knew that I am a stern man, taking up what I did not lay down and reaping what I did not sow. Why, then, did you not put my money in a bank, so that I on my return might have gotten it with interest?’ And he said to the bystanders, ‘Take away the gold piece from him, and give it to him who has the ten gold pieces.’ But they said to him, ‘Lord, he has ten gold pieces.’ I say to you that to everyone who has shall be given; but from him who does not have, even that which he has shall be taken away.
