First ReadingGenesis 4:1-15, 25*

From the Book of Genesis

1The man knew Eve his wife. She conceived, and gave birth to Cain, and said, “I have gotten a man with the Lord’s help.”2Again she gave birth, to Cain’s brother Abel.Abel was a keeper of sheep, but Cain was a tiller of the ground.3As time passed, Cain brought an offering to the Lord from the fruit of the ground.4Abel also brought some of the firstborn of his flock and of its fat.The Lord respected Abel and his offering,5but he didn’t respect Cain and his offering.Cain was very angry, and the expression on his face fell.6The Lord said to Cain, “Why are you angry? Why has the expression of your face fallen?7If you do well, won’t it be lifted up?If you don’t do well, sin crouches at the door. Its desire is for you, but you are to rule over it.”8Cain said to Abel, his brother, “Let’s go into the field.”While they were in the field,Cain rose up against Abel, his brother, and killed him.

9The Lord said to Cain, “Where is Abel, your brother?”

He said, “I don’t know.Am I my brother’s keeper?”

10The Lord said, “What have you done? The voice of your brother’s blood cries to me from the ground.11Now you are cursed because of the ground, which has opened its mouth to receive your brother’s blood from your hand.12From now on, when you till the ground,it won’t yield its strength to you.You will be a fugitive and a wanderer on the earth.”

13Cain said to the Lord,“My punishment is greater than I can bear.14Behold, you have driven me out today from the surface of the ground.I will be hidden from your face, and I will be a fugitive and a wanderer on the earth.Whoever finds me will kill me.”

15The Lord said to him,“Therefore whoever slays Cain, vengeance will be taken on him sevenfold.”The Lord appointed a sign for Cain,so that anyone finding him would not strike him.

verses 16–24 are not read25Adam knew his wife again. She gave birth to a son,and named him Seth, saying, “for God has given me another child instead of Abel, for Cain killed him.”

Responsorial PsalmPsalm 50:1 and 8, 16bc-17, 20-21*

1The Mighty One, God, the Lord, speaks, and calls the earth from sunrise to sunset.8I don’t rebuke you for your sacrifices.Your burnt offerings are continually before me.

16But to the wicked God says,“What right do you have to declare my statutes, that you have taken my covenant on your lips,17since you hate instruction, and throw my words behind you?

20You sit and speak against your brother. You slander your own mother’s son.21You have done these things, and I kept silent. You thought that I was just like you.I will rebuke you, and accuse you in front of your eyes.

GospelMark 8:11-13

From the Gospel according to Mark

11The Pharisees came out and began to question him, seeking from him a sign from heaven and testing him.12He sighed deeply in his spirit and said,“Why does this generation seek a sign? Most certainly I tell you,no sign will be given to this generation.”

13He left them, and again entering into the boat, departed to the other side.

EpistleLectio

Léctio Epístolæ beáti Pauli Apóstoli ad Corinthios

1 Cor 13:1-13

Lesson from the first letter of St. Paul the Apostle to the Corinthians

1 Cor. 13:1-13

Brethren: If I should speak with the tongues of men and of angels, but do not have charity, I have become as sounding brass or a tinkling cymbal. And if I have prophecy and know all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have all faith so as to remove mountains, yet do not have charity, I am nothing. And if I distribute all my goods to feed the poor, and if I deliver my body to be burned, yet do not have charity, it profits me nothing. Charity is patient, is kind; charity does not envy, is not pretentious, is not puffed up, is not ambitious, is not self-seeking, is not provoked; thinks no evil, does not rejoice over wickedness, but rejoices with the truth; bears with all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Charity never fails, whereas prophecies will disappear, and tongues will cease, and knowledge will be destroyed. For we know in part and we prophesy in part; but when that which is perfect has come, that which is imperfect will be done away with. When I was a child, I spoke as a child, I felt as a child, I thought as a child. Now that I have become a man, I have put away the things of a child. We see now through a mirror in an obscure manner, but then face to face. Now I know in part, but then I shall know even as I have been known. So there abide faith, hope and charity, these three; but the greatest of these is charity.

GospelEvangelium

Sequéntia ☩ sancti Evangélii secúndum Lucam

Luc 18:31-43

At ille dixit: Dómine, ut vídeam.

Continuation ☩ of the Holy Gospel according to Luke

Luke 18:31-43

At that time, Jesus taking to Himself the Twelve said to them, Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem, and all things that have been written by the prophets concerning the Son of Man will be accomplished. For He will be delivered to the Gentiles, and will be mocked and scourged and spit upon; and after they have scourged Him, they will put Him to death; and on the third day He will rise again. And they understood none of these things and this saying was hidden from them, neither did they get to know the things that were being said. Now it came to pass as He drew near to Jericho, that a certain blind man was sitting by the wayside, begging; but hearing a crowd passing by, he inquired what this might be. And they told him that Jesus of Nazareth was passing by. And he cried out, saying, Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me! And they who went in front angrily tried to silence him. But he cried out all the louder, Son of David, have mercy on me! Then Jesus stopped and commanded that he should be brought to Him. And when he drew near, He asked him, saying, What would you have Me do for you? And he said, Lord, that I may see. And Jesus said to him, Receive your sight, your faith has saved you. And at once he received his sight, and followed Him, glorifying God. And all the people upon seeing it gave praise to God.

It is truly meet and just, and profitable unto salvation, that we should at all times, and in all places, give thanks to Thee, O Holy Lord, Father Almighty, eternal God, through Christ, our Lord. And do Thou command that it be permitted us to join with them in confessing Thee, while we say with lowly praise:
