First ReadingGenesis 32:23-33

From the Book of Genesis

23He rose up that night, and took his two wives, and his two servants, and his eleven sons, and crossed over the ford of the Jabbok.24He took them, and sent them over the stream, and sent over that which he had.25Jacob was left alone, and wrestled with a man there until the breaking of the day.26When he saw that he didn’t prevail against him,the man touched the hollow of his thigh, and the hollow of Jacob’s thigh was strained as he wrestled.27The man said, “Let me go, for the day breaks.”

Jacob said, “I won’t let you go unless you bless me.”

28He said to him, “What is your name?”

He said, “Jacob”.

29He said, “Your name will no longer be called Jacob, but Israel;for you have fought with God and with men,and have prevailed.”

30Jacob asked him, “Please tell me your name.”

He said, “Why is it that you ask what my name is?”So he blessed him there.

31Jacob called the name of the place Peniel;for he said, “I have seen God face to face, and my life is preserved.”32The sun rose on him as he passed over Peniel, and he limped because of his thigh.33Therefore the children of Israel don’t eat the sinew of the hip, which is on the hollow of the thigh,to this day, because he touched the hollow of Jacob’s thigh in the sinew of the hip.

Responsorial PsalmPsalm 17:1b, 2-3, 6-7ab, 8b and 15

1Hear, Lord, my righteous plea.Give ear to my prayer that doesn’t go out of deceitful lips.

2Let my sentence come out of your presence.Let your eyes look on equity.3You have proved my heart. You have visited me in the night. You have tried me, and found nothing.I have resolved that my mouth shall not disobey.

6I have called on you, for you will answer me, God.Turn your ear to me.Hear my speech.7Show your marvelous loving kindness, you who save those who take refuge by your right hand from their enemies.

8Keep me as the apple of your eye.Hide me under the shadow of your wings,15As for me, I shall see your face in righteousness.I shall be satisfied, when I awake, with seeing your form.

GospelMatthew 9:32-38

From the Gospel according to Matthew

32As they went out, behold,a mute man who was demon possessed was brought to him.33When the demon was cast out, the mute man spoke. The multitudes marveled, saying, “Nothing like this has ever been seen in Israel!”

34But the Pharisees said,“By the prince of the demons,he casts out demons.”

35Jesus went about all the cities and the villages, teaching in their synagoguesand preaching the Good News of the Kingdom, and healing every diseaseand every sickness among the people.36But when he saw the multitudes,he was moved with compassion for thembecause they were harassed and scattered, like sheep without a shepherd.37Then he said to his disciples,“The harvest indeed is plentiful, but the laborers are few.38Pray thereforethat the Lord of the harvest will send out laborers into his harvest.”

Léctio Epístolæ beáti Pauli Apóstoli ad Romános

Rom 8:18-23

Lesson from the letter of St. Paul the Apostle to the Romans

Rom 8:18-23

Brethren: I reckon that the sufferings of the present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory to come that will be revealed in us. For the eager longing of creation awaits the revelation of the sons of God. For creation was made subject to vanity - not by its own will but by reason of Him Who made it subject - in hope, because creation itself also will be delivered from its slavery to corruption into the freedom of the glory of the sons of God. For we know that all creation groans and travails in pain until now. And not only it, but we ourselves also who have the first-fruits of the Spirit - we ourselves groan within ourselves, waiting for the adoption as sons of God, the redemption of our body, in Christ Jesus our Lord.

℣.Adjuva nos, Deus, salutáris noster: et propter honórem nóminis tui, Dómine, líbera nos.

Allelúja, allelúja.

Ps 9:5; 9:10

Deus, qui sedes super thronum, et júdicas æquitátem: esto refúgium páuperum in tribulatióne. Allelúja.

Ps. 78:9-10

Pardon our sins, O Lord; why should the nations say, Where is their God?

℣.Help us, O God our Saviour; because of the glory of Your name, O Lord, deliver us. Alleluia, alleluia.

Ps. 9:5; 9:10

O God, seated on Your throne, judging justly: be a stronghold for the oppressed in times of distress. Alleluia.

Sequéntia ☩ sancti Evangélii secúndum Lucam

Luc 5:1-11

In illo témpore: Cum turbæ irrúerent in Jesum, ut audírent verbum Dei, et ipse stabat secus stagnum Genésareth. Et vidit duas naves stantes secus stagnum: piscatóres autem descénderant et lavábant rétia. Ascéndens autem in unam navim, quæ erat Simónis, rogávit eum a terra redúcere pusíllum.

Continuation ☩ of the Holy Gospel according to Luke

Luke 5:1-11

At that time, while the crowds were pressing upon Jesus to hear the word of God, He was standing by Lake Genesareth. And He saw two boats moored by the lake, but the fishermen had left them and were washing their nets. And getting into one of the boats, the one that was Simon’s, He asked him to put out a little from the land. And sitting down, He began to teach the crowds from the boat. But when He had ceased speaking, He said to Simon, Put out into the deep, and lower your nets for a catch. And Simon answered and said to Him, Master, the whole night through we have toiled and have taken nothing; but at Your word I will lower the net. And when they had done so, they enclosed a great number of fishes, but their net was breaking. And they beckoned to their comrades in the other boat to come and help them. And they came and filled both the boats, so that they began to sink. But when Simon Peter saw this, he fell down at Jesus’ knees, saying, Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, O Lord. For he and all who were with him were amazed at the catch of fish they had made; and so were also James and John, the sons of Zebedee, who were partners with Simon. And Jesus said to Simon, Do not be afraid; henceforth you shall catch men. And when they had brought their boats to land, they left all and followed Him.
