First Reading1 Kings 17:1-6

From the First Book of Kings

1Elijah the Tishbite, who was one of the settlers of Gilead, said to Ahab, “As the Lord, the God of Israel, lives, before whom I stand, there shall not be dew nor rain these years, but according to my word.”

2Then the Lord’s word came to him, saying,3“Go away from here, turn eastward, and hide yourself by the brook Cherith, that is before the Jordan.4You shall drink from the brook.I have commanded the ravens to feed you there.”5So he went and did according to the Lord’s word, for he went and lived by the brook Cheriththat is before the Jordan.6The ravens brought him bread and meat in the morning, and bread and meat in the evening;and he drank from the brook.

Responsorial PsalmPsalm 121:1bc-2, 3-4, 5-6, 7-8

1I will lift up my eyes to the hills.Where does my help come from?2My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth.

3He will not allow your foot to be moved. He who keeps you will not slumber.4Behold, he who keeps Israelwill neither slumber nor sleep.

5The Lord is your keeper. The Lord is your shade on your right hand.6The sun will not harm you by day,nor the moon by night.

7The Lord will keep you from all evil.He will keep your soul.8The Lord will keep your going out and your coming in,from this time forward, and forever more.

GospelMatthew 5:1-12

From the Gospel according to Matthew

1Seeing the multitudes, he went up onto the mountain. When he had sat down, his disciples came to him.2He opened his mouth and taught them, saying,

3“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven.4Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.5Blessed are the gentle, for they shall inherit the earth.6Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be filled.7Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy.8Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.9Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called children of God.10Blessed are those who have been persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven.

11“Blessed are you when people reproach you, persecute you,and say all kinds of evil against you falsely, for my sake.12Rejoice, and be exceedingly glad, for great is your reward in heaven. For that is how they persecuted the prophetswho were before you.
