First Reading2 Corinthians 9:6-11

From the Second Letter of Paul to the Corinthians

6Remember this:he who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly. He who sows bountifully will also reap bountifully.7Let each man give according as he has determined in his heart, not grudgingly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.8And God is able to make all grace abound to you, that you, always having all sufficiency in everything, may abound to every good work.9As it is written,

“He has scattered abroad. He has given to the poor. His righteousness remains forever.”

10Now may he who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food, supply and multiply your seed for sowing, and increase the fruits of your righteousness,11you being enriched in everything for all generosity, which produces thanksgiving to God through us.

Responsorial PsalmPsalm 112:1bc-2, 3-4, 9

1Praise the Lord!Blessed is the man who fears the Lord, who delights greatly in his commandments.2His offspring will be mighty in the land. The generation of the upright will be blessed.

3Wealth and riches are in his house. His righteousness endures forever.4Light dawns in the darkness for the upright, gracious, merciful, and righteous.

9He has dispersed, he has given to the poor. His righteousness endures forever. His horn will be exalted with honor.

GospelMatthew 6:1-6, 16-18

From the Gospel according to Matthew

1“Be careful that you don’t do your charitable giving before men,to be seen by them,or else you have no reward from your Father who is in heaven.2Therefore, when you do merciful deeds, don’t sound a trumpet before yourself,as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may get glory from men. Most certainly I tell you, they have received their reward.3But when you do merciful deeds, don’t let your left hand know what your right hand does,4so that your merciful deeds may be in secret, then your Fatherwho sees in secret will reward you openly.

5“When you pray, you shall not be as the hypocrites, for they love to stand and pray in the synagoguesand in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen by men. Most certainly, I tell you, they have received their reward.6But you, when you pray, enter into your inner room, and having shut your door, pray to your Father who is in secret;and your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly.

verses 7–15 are not read16“Moreover when you fast, don’t be like the hypocrites, with sad faces. For they disfigure their facesthat they may be seen by men to be fasting. Most certainly I tell you, they have received their reward.17But you, when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face,18so that you are not seen by men to be fasting, but by your Father who is in secret;and your Father, who sees in secret, will reward you.
