Feast · Ordinary Time · Sunday Cycle A · Psalter Week 3

First ReadingIsaiah 9:1-6

From the Book of Isaiah

1The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light.

The light has shined on those who lived in the land of the shadow of death.2You have multiplied the nation. You have increased their joy.

They rejoice before you according to the joy in harvest,as men rejoice when they divide the plunder.3For the yoke of his burden, and the staff of his shoulder, the rod of his oppressor, you have broken as in the day of Midian.4For all the armor of the armed man in the noisy battle, and the garments rolled in blood, will be for burning, fuel for the fire.5For a child is born to us.A son is given to us;and the government will be on his shoulders. His name will be called Wonderful Counselor,Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.6Of the increase of his governmentand of peace there shall be no end,on David’s throne, and on his kingdom,to establish it, and to uphold it with justiceand with righteousness from that time on, even forever. The zeal of the Lord of Armies will perform this.

Responsorial PsalmPsalm 98:1, 2-3ab, 3cd-4, 5-6

1Sing to the Lord a new song, for he has done marvelous things! His right hand and his holy arm have worked salvation for him.

2The Lord has made known his salvation. He has openly shown his righteousness in the sight of the nations.3He has remembered his loving kindness and his faithfulness toward the house of Israel.

3All the ends of the earth have seen the salvation of our God.4Make a joyful noise to the Lord, all the earth!Burst out and sing for joy, yes, sing praises!

5Sing praises to the Lord with the harp, with the harp and the voice of melody.6With trumpets and sound of the ram’s horn, make a joyful noise before the King, the Lord.

Second ReadingEphesians 1:3-6, 15-18

From the Letter of Paul to the Ephesians

3Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ,4even as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we would be holyand without defect before him in love,5having predestined us for adoption as children through Jesus Christ to himself, according to the good pleasure of his desire,6to the praise of the glory of his grace,by which he freely gave us favor in the Beloved.

verses 7–14 are not read15For this cause I also, having heard of the faith in the Lord Jesus which is among youand the love which you have toward all the saints,16don’t cease to give thanks for you, making mention of you in my prayers,17that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give to you a spirit of wisdomand revelation in the knowledge of him,18having the eyes of your hearts enlightened, that you may know what is the hope of his calling, and what are the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints,

GospelMatthew 18:1-5, 10

From the Gospel according to Matthew

1In that hour the disciples came to Jesus, saying, “Who then is greatest in the Kingdom of Heaven?”

2Jesus called a little child to himself, and set him in the middle of them3and said, “Most certainly I tell you, unless you turn and become as little children, you will in no way enter into the Kingdom of Heaven.4Whoever therefore humbles himself as this little child is the greatest in the Kingdom of Heaven.5Whoever receives one such little child in my name receives me, verses 6–9 are not read10See that you don’t despise one of these little ones, for I tell youthat in heaven their angels always see the face of my Father who is in heaven.

Léctio Epístolæ beáti Pauli Apóstoli ad Corínthios

1 Cor 9:24-27; 10:1-5

Lesson from the first letter of St. Paul the Apostle to the Corinthians

1 Cor. 9:24-27; 10:1-5

Brethren: Do you not know that those who run in a race, all indeed run, but one receives the prize? So run as to obtain it. And everyone in a contest abstains from all things - and they indeed to receive a perishable crown, but we an imperishable. I, therefore, so run as not without a purpose; I so fight as not beating the air; but I chastise my body and bring it into subjection, lest perhaps after preaching to others I myself should be rejected. For I would not have you ignorant, brethren, that our fathers were all under the cloud, and all passed through the sea, all were baptized in Moses, in the cloud and in the sea. And all ate the same spiritual food, and all drank the same spiritual drink for they drank from the spiritual rock which followed them, and the rock was Christ. Yet with most of them God was not well pleased.

Sequéntia ☩ sancti Evangélii secúndum Matthǽum

Matt 20:1-16

Continuation ☩ of the Holy Gospel according to Matthew

Matt 20:1-16

At that time, Jesus spoke to His disciples this parable: The kingdom of heaven is like a householder who went out early in the morning to hire laborers for his vineyard. And having agreed with the laborers for a denarius a day, he sent them into his vineyard. And about the third hour, he went out and saw others standing in the market place idle; and he said to them, ‘Go you also into the vineyard, and I will give you whatever is just.’ So they went. And again he went out about the sixth, and about the ninth hour, and did as before. But about the eleventh hour he went out and found others standing about and he said to them, ‘Why do you stand here all day idle?’ They said to him, ‘Because no man has hired us.’ He said to them, ‘Go you also into the vineyard.’ But when evening had come, the owner of the vineyard said to his steward, ‘Call the laborers, and pay them their wages, beginning from the last even to the first.’ Now when they of the eleventh hour came, they received each a denarius. And when the first in their term came, they thought that they would receive more; but they also received each his denarius. And on receiving it, they began to murmur against the householder, saying, ‘These last have worked a single hour, and you have put them on a level with us, who have borne the burden of the day’s heat.’ But answering one of them, he said, ‘Friend, I do you no injustice; did you not agree with me for a denarius? Take what is yours and go; I choose to give to this last even as to you. Have I not a right to do what I choose? Or are you envious because I am generous?’ Even so the last shall be first, and the first last; for many are called, but few are chosen.

PrefacePrefatio

Holy Trinity

It is truly meet and just, right and for our salvation, that we should at all times, and in all places, give thanks unto Thee, O holy Lord, Father almighty, everlasting God; Who, together with Thine only-begotten Son, and the Holy Ghost, art one God, one Lord: not in the oneness of a single Person, but in the Trinity of one substance. For what we believe by Thy revelation of Thy glory, the same do we believe of Thy Son, the same of the Holy Ghost, without difference or separation. So that in confessing the true and everlasting Godhead, distinction in persons, unity in essence, and equality in majesty may be adored. Which the Angels and Archangels, the Cherubim also and Seraphim do praise: who cease not daily to cry out, with one voice saying:
