Optional memorial: Saint Henry

First ReadingGenesis 46:1-7, 28-30

From the Book of Genesis

1Israel traveled with all that he had,and came to Beersheba, and offered sacrifices to the God of his father, Isaac.2God spoke to Israel in the visions of the night, and said, “Jacob, Jacob!”

He said, “Here I am.”

3He said, “I am God, the God of your father.Don’t be afraid to go down into Egypt, for there I will make of you a great nation.4I will go down with you into Egypt.I will also surely bring you up again.Joseph’s hand will close your eyes.”

5Jacob rose up from Beersheba, and the sons of Israel carried Jacob, their father, their little ones, and their wives, in the wagonswhich Pharaoh had sent to carry him.6They took their livestock, and their goods, which they had gotten in the land of Canaan, and came into Egypt—Jacob, and all his offspring with him,7his sons, and his sons’ sons with him,his daughters, and his sons’ daughters, and he brought all his offspring with him into Egypt.

verses 8–27 are not read28Jacob sent Judah before him to Joseph,to show the way before him to Goshen, and they came into the land of Goshen.29Joseph prepared his chariot, and went up to meet Israel, his father, in Goshen. He presented himself to him,and fell on his neck, and wept on his neck a good while.30Israel said to Joseph,“Now let me die, since I have seen your face, that you are still alive.”

Responsorial PsalmPsalm 37:3-4, 18-19, 27-28, 39-40

3Trust in the Lord, and do good.Dwell in the land, and enjoy safe pasture.4Also delight yourself in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart.

18The Lord knows the days of the perfect.Their inheritance shall be forever.19They shall not be disappointed in the time of evil.In the days of famine they shall be satisfied.

27Depart from evil, and do good.Live securely forever.28For the Lord loves justice, and doesn’t forsake his saints. They are preserved forever, but the children of the wicked shall be cut off.

39But the salvation of the righteous is from the Lord.He is their stronghold in the time of trouble.40The Lord helps them and rescues them.He rescues them from the wicked and saves them, because they have taken refuge in him.

GospelMatthew 10:16-23

From the Gospel according to Matthew

16“Behold, I send you out as sheep among wolves. Therefore be wise as serpents and harmless as doves.17But beware of men,for they will deliver you up to councils, and in their synagogues they will scourge you.18Yes, and you will be brought before governorsand kings for my sake, for a testimony to them and to the nations.19But when they deliver you up,don’t be anxious how or what you will say,for it will be given you in that hour what you will say.20For it is not you who speak, but the Spirit of your Father who speaks in you.

21“Brother will deliver up brother to death, and the father his child.Children will rise up against parentsand cause them to be put to death.22You will be hated by all men for my name’s sake, but he who endures to the end will be saved.23But when they persecute you in this city, flee into the next, for most certainly I tell you,you will not have gone through the cities of Israel until the Son of Man has come.

Léctio Epístolæ beáti Pauli Apóstoli ad Romános

Rom 8:12-17

Lesson from the letter of St. Paul the Apostle to the Romans

Rom 8:12-17

Brethren: We are debtors, not to the flesh, that we should live according to the flesh, for if you live according to the flesh you will die; but if by the spirit you put to death the deeds of the flesh, you will live. For whoever are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God. Now you have not received a spirit of bondage so as to be again in fear, but you have received a spirit of adoption as sons, by virtue of which we cry, Abba! Father! The Spirit Himself gives testimony to our spirit that we are sons of God. But if we are sons, we are heirs also: heirs indeed of God and joint heirs with Christ.

GospelEvangelium

Sequéntia ☩ sancti Evangélii secúndum Lucam

Luc 16:1-9

Ait autem víllicus intra se: Quid fáciam, quia dóminus meus aufert a me villicatiónem? fódere non váleo, mendicáre erubésco. Scio, quid fáciam, ut, cum amótus fúero a villicatióne, recípiant me in domos suas. Convocátis itaque síngulis debitóribus dómini sui, dicébat primo: Quantum debes dómino meo? At ille dixit: Centum cados ólei.

Continuation ☩ of the Holy Gospel according to Luke

Luke 16:1-9

At that time, Jesus spoke to His disciples this parable: There was a certain rich man who had a steward, who was reported to him as squandering his possessions. And he called him and said to him, ‘What is this that I hear of you? Make an accounting of your stewardship, for you can be steward no longer.’ And the steward said within himself, ‘What shall I do, seeing that my master is taking away the stewardship from me? To dig I am not able; to beg I am ashamed. I know what I shall do, that when I am removed from my stewardship they may receive me into their houses.’ And he summoned each of his master’s debtors and said to the first, ‘How much do you owe my master?’ And he said, ‘A hundred jars of oil.’ He said to him, ‘Take your bond and sit down at once and write fifty.’ Then he said to another, ‘How much do you owe?’ He said, ‘A hundred kors of wheat.’ He said to him, ‘Take your bond and write eighty.’ And the master commended the unjust steward, in that he had acted prudently; for the children of this world, in relation to their own generation, are more prudent than the children of the light. And I say to you, make friends for yourselves with the mammon of wickedness, so that when you fail they may receive you into the everlasting dwellings.

It is truly meet and just, and profitable unto salvation, that we should at all times, and in all places, give thanks to Thee, O Holy Lord, Father Almighty, eternal God, through Christ, our Lord. Through whom the Angels praise Thy Majesty, the Dominions adore it, the Powers are in awe. Which the heavens and the hosts of heaven together with the blessed Seraphim joyfully do magnify. And do Thou command that it be permitted us to join with them in confessing Thee, while we say with lowly praise:
