Our Lord Jesus Christ, the Black Nazarene (Jesús Nazareno)

Feast · Christmas Time · Sunday Cycle B · Psalter Week 2

First ReadingNumbers 21:4b-9

From the Book of Numbers

4They traveled from Mount Hor by the way to the Red Sea,to go around the land of Edom. The soul of the people was very discouragedbecause of the journey.5The people spoke against God and against Moses:“Why have you brought us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness? For there is no bread, there is no water, and our soul loathes this disgusting food!”

6The Lord sent venomous snakes among the people, and they bit the people. Many people of Israel died.7The people came to Moses, and said, “We have sinned, because we have spoken against the Lord and against you.Pray to the Lord, that he take away the serpents from us.”Moses prayed for the people.

8The Lord said to Moses,“Make a venomous snake, and set it on a pole.It shall happen that everyone who is bitten, when he sees it, shall live.”9Moses made a serpent of bronze, and set it on the pole.If a serpent had bitten any man, when he looked at the serpent of bronze, he lived.

Responsorial PsalmPsalm 78:1bc-2, 34-35, 36-37, 38

1Hear my teaching, my people.Turn your ears to the words of my mouth.2I will open my mouth in a parable.I will utter dark sayings of old,

34When he killed them, then they inquired after him. They returned and sought God earnestly.35They remembered that God was their rock, the Most High God, their redeemer.

36But they flattered him with their mouth, and lied to him with their tongue.37For their heart was not right with him, neither were they faithful in his covenant.

38But he, being merciful, forgave iniquity, and didn’t destroy them.Yes, many times he turned his anger away, and didn’t stir up all his wrath.

Second ReadingPhilippians 2:6-11

From the Letter of Paul to the Philippians

6who, existing in the form of God,didn’t consider equality with God a thing to be grasped,7but emptied himself, taking the form of a servant, being made in the likeness of men.8And being found in human form,he humbled himself, becoming obedient to the point of death, yes, the death of the cross.9Therefore God also highly exalted him,and gave to him the name which is above every name,10that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow,of those in heaven, those on earth, and those under the earth,11and that every tongue should confessthat Jesus Christ is Lord,to the glory of God the Father.

GospelJohn 3:13-17

From the Gospel according to John

13No one has ascended into heavenbut he who descended out of heaven, the Son of Man, who is in heaven.14As Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up,15that whoever believes in him should not perish, but have eternal life.16For God so loved the world, that he gave his only born Son,that whoever believes in him should not perish, but have eternal life.17For God didn’t send his Son into the world to judge the world, but that the world should be saved through him.

Lesson from the book of Isaias

Isa 60:1-6

Rise up in splendor, O Jerusalem! Your light has come, the glory of the Lord shines upon you. See, darkness covers the earth, and thick clouds cover the peoples; but upon you the Lord shines, and over you appears His glory. Nations shall walk by your light, and kings by your shining radiance. Raise your eyes and look about; they all gather and come to you: your sons come from afar, and your daughters in the arms of their nurses. Then you shall be radiant at what you see, your heart shall throb and overflow, for the riches of the sea shall be emptied out before you, the wealth of nations shall be brought to you. Caravans of camels shall fill you, dromedaries from Madian and Epha; all from Saba shall come bearing gold and frankincense, and proclaiming the praises of the Lord.

GospelEvangelium

Sequéntia ☩ sancti Evangélii secúndum Matthǽum

Matt 2:1-12

Continuation ☩ of the Holy Gospel according to Matthew

Matt 2:1-12

When Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea, in the days of King Herod, behold, Magi came from the East to Jerusalem, saying, Where is He that is born King of the Jews? For we have seen His star in the east and have come to worship Him. But when King Herod heard this, he was troubled, and so was all Jerusalem with him. And gathering together all the chief priests and Scribes of the people, he inquired of them where the Christ was to be born. And they said to him, In Bethlehem of Judea; for thus it is written by the prophet, ‘And you, Bethlehem, of the land of Juda, are by no means least among the princes of Juda; for from you shall come forth a leader who shall rule My people Israel.’ Then Herod summoned the Magi secretly, and carefully ascertained from them the time when the star had appeared to them. And sending them to Bethlehem, he said, Go and make careful inquiry concerning the Child, and when you have found Him, bring me word, that I too may go and worship Him. Now they, having heard the king, went their way. And behold, the star that they had seen in the East went before them, until it came and stood over the place where the Child was. And when they saw the star they rejoiced exceedingly. And entering the house, they found the Child with Mary His Mother, (genuflect) and falling down they worshipped Him. And opening their treasures they offered Him gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh. And being warned in a dream not to return to Herod, they went back to their own country by another way.

It is truly meet and just, right and availing unto salvation, that we should in all times and in all places give thanks unto Thee, O holy Lord, Father almighty and everlasting God. For when Thine only begotten Son showed Himself in the substance of our mortal nature, He restored us by the new light of His own immortality. And therefore with angels and archangels, with thrones and dominions, and with all the heavenly hosts, we sing a hymn to Thy glory, saying without ceasing:
