First ReadingJames 5:1-6

From the Letter of James

1Come now, you rich, weep and howl for your miseries that are coming on you.2Your riches are corruptedand your garments are moth-eaten.3Your gold and your silver are corroded, and their corrosion will be for a testimony against youand will eat your flesh like fire. You have laid up your treasure in the last days.4Behold, the wages of the laborers who mowed your fields, which you have kept back by fraud, cry out;and the cries of thosewho reaped have entered into the ears of the Lord of Armies.5You have lived in luxury on the earth, and taken your pleasure. You have nourished your hearts as in a day of slaughter.6You have condemnedand you have murdered the righteous one.He doesn’t resist you.

Responsorial PsalmPsalm 49:14-15ab, 15cd-16, 17-18, 19-20

14This is the destiny of those who are foolish, and of those who approve their sayings.15They are appointed as a flock for Sheol.Death shall be their shepherd.

15The upright shall have dominion over them in the morning.Their beauty shall decay in Sheol, far from their mansion.16But God will redeem my soul from the power of Sheol, for he will receive me.

17Don’t be afraid when a man is made rich, when the glory of his house is increased;18for when he dies he will carry nothing away. His glory won’t descend after him.

19Though while he lived he blessed his soul—and men praise you when you do well for yourself—20he shall go to the generation of his fathers. They shall never see the light.

GospelMark 9:41-50

From the Gospel according to Mark

41For whoever will give you a cup of water to drink in my namebecause you are Christ’s,most certainly I tell you,he will in no way lose his reward.

42“Whoever will cause one of these little oneswho believe in me to stumble,it would be better for him if he were thrown into the sea with a millstone hung around his neck.43If your hand causes you to stumble, cut it off.It is better for you to enter into life maimed, rather than having your two hands to go into Gehenna, into the unquenchable fire,45If your foot causes you to stumble, cut it off.It is better for you to enter into life lame, rather than having your two feet to be cast into Gehenna, into the fire that will never be quenched—47If your eye causes you to stumble, throw it out.It is better for you to enter into God’s Kingdom with one eye, rather than having two eyes to be cast into the Gehenna of fire,48‘where their worm doesn’t die,and the fire is not quenched.’49For everyone will be salted with fire, and every sacrifice will be seasoned with salt.50Salt is good, but if the salt has lost its saltiness, with what will you season it?Have salt in yourselves, and be at peace with one another.”

EpistleLectio

Léctio Epístolæ beáti Pauli Apóstoli ad Corínthios

1 Cor 9:24-27; 10:1-5

Lesson from the first letter of St. Paul the Apostle to the Corinthians

1 Cor. 9:24-27; 10:1-5

Brethren: Do you not know that those who run in a race, all indeed run, but one receives the prize? So run as to obtain it. And everyone in a contest abstains from all things - and they indeed to receive a perishable crown, but we an imperishable. I, therefore, so run as not without a purpose; I so fight as not beating the air; but I chastise my body and bring it into subjection, lest perhaps after preaching to others I myself should be rejected. For I would not have you ignorant, brethren, that our fathers were all under the cloud, and all passed through the sea, all were baptized in Moses, in the cloud and in the sea. And all ate the same spiritual food, and all drank the same spiritual drink for they drank from the spiritual rock which followed them, and the rock was Christ. Yet with most of them God was not well pleased.

Ps 9:10-11; 9:19-20

Adjútor in opportunitátibus, in tribulatióne: sperent in te, qui novérunt te: quóniam non derelínquis quæréntes te, Dómine,

℣.Quóniam non in finem oblívio erit páuperis: patiéntia páuperum non períbit in ætérnum: exsúrge, Dómine, non præváleat homo.

Ps 9:10-11; 9:19-20

A helper in due time in tribulation. Let them trust in thee who know thy name: for thou hast not forsaken them that seek thee, O Lord.

For the poor man shall not be forgotten to the end: the patience of the poor shall not perish for ever. Arise, O Lord, let not man be strengthened.

Sequéntia ☩ sancti Evangélii secúndum Matthǽum

Matt 20:1-16

Continuation ☩ of the Holy Gospel according to Matthew

Matt 20:1-16

At that time, Jesus spoke to His disciples this parable: The kingdom of heaven is like a householder who went out early in the morning to hire laborers for his vineyard. And having agreed with the laborers for a denarius a day, he sent them into his vineyard. And about the third hour, he went out and saw others standing in the market place idle; and he said to them, ‘Go you also into the vineyard, and I will give you whatever is just.’ So they went. And again he went out about the sixth, and about the ninth hour, and did as before. But about the eleventh hour he went out and found others standing about and he said to them, ‘Why do you stand here all day idle?’ They said to him, ‘Because no man has hired us.’ He said to them, ‘Go you also into the vineyard.’ But when evening had come, the owner of the vineyard said to his steward, ‘Call the laborers, and pay them their wages, beginning from the last even to the first.’ Now when they of the eleventh hour came, they received each a denarius. And when the first in their term came, they thought that they would receive more; but they also received each his denarius. And on receiving it, they began to murmur against the householder, saying, ‘These last have worked a single hour, and you have put them on a level with us, who have borne the burden of the day’s heat.’ But answering one of them, he said, ‘Friend, I do you no injustice; did you not agree with me for a denarius? Take what is yours and go; I choose to give to this last even as to you. Have I not a right to do what I choose? Or are you envious because I am generous?’ Even so the last shall be first, and the first last; for many are called, but few are chosen.

Common

It is truly meet and just, and profitable unto salvation, that we should at all times, and in all places, give thanks to Thee, O Holy Lord, Father Almighty, eternal God, through Christ, our Lord. Through whom the Angels praise Thy Majesty, the Dominions adore it, the Powers are in awe. Which the heavens and the hosts of heaven together with the blessed Seraphim joyfully do magnify. And do Thou command that it be permitted us to join with them in confessing Thee, while we say with lowly praise:
