First Reading2 Kings 2:1, 6-14

From the Second Book of Kings

1When the Lord was about to take Elijah up by a whirlwind into heaven,Elijah went with Elisha from Gilgal.

verses 2–5 are not read6Elijah said to him,“Please wait here,for the Lord has sent me to the Jordan.”

He said, “As the Lord lives,and as your soul lives,I will not leave you.”Then they both went on.7Fifty men of the sons of the prophets wentand stood opposite them at a distance;and they both stood by the Jordan.8Elijah took his mantle,and rolled it up, and struck the waters;and they were divided here and there,so that they both went over on dry ground.9When they had gone over,Elijah said to Elisha,“Ask what I shall do for you,before I am taken from you.”

Elisha said, “Please let a double portion of your spirit be on me.”

10He said, “You have asked a hard thing.If you see me when I am taken from you,it will be so for you;but if not, it will not be so.”

11As they continued on and talked,behold, a chariot of fireand horses of fire separated them;and Elijah went up by a whirlwind into heaven.12Elisha saw it, and he cried,“My father, my father,the chariots of Israel and its horsemen!”

He saw him no more.Then he took hold of his own clothesand tore them in two pieces.13He also took up Elijah’s mantle that fell from him,and went back and stood by the bank of the Jordan.14He took Elijah’s mantle that fell from him,and struck the waters,and said, “Where is the Lord,the God of Elijah?”When he also had struck the waters,they were divided apart,and Elisha went over.

Responsorial PsalmPsalm 31:20, 21, 24

20Oh how great is your goodness,which you have laid up for those who fear you,which you have worked for those who take refuge in you,before the sons of men!

21In the shelter of your presence you will hide them from the plotting of man.You will keep them secretly in a dwelling away from the strife of tongues.

24Oh love the Lord, all you his saints!The Lord preserves the faithful,and fully recompenses him who behaves arrogantly.

GospelMatthew 6:1-6, 16-18

From the Gospel according to Matthew

1“Be careful that you don’t do your charitable giving before men,to be seen by them,or else you have no reward from your Father who is in heaven.2Therefore, when you do merciful deeds,don’t sound a trumpet before yourself,as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets,that they may get glory from men.Most certainly I tell you,they have received their reward.3But when you do merciful deeds,don’t let your left hand know what your right hand does,4so that your merciful deeds may be in secret,then your Fatherwho sees in secret will reward you openly.

5“When you pray, you shall not be as the hypocrites,for they love to stand and pray in the synagoguesand in the corners of the streets,that they may be seen by men.Most certainly, I tell you,they have received their reward.6But you, when you pray,enter into your inner room,and having shut your door,pray to your Father who is in secret;and your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly.

verses 7–15 are not read16“Moreover when you fast,don’t be like the hypocrites, with sad faces.For they disfigure their facesthat they may be seen by men to be fasting.Most certainly I tell you,they have received their reward.17But you, when you fast,anoint your head and wash your face,18so that you are not seen by men to be fasting,but by your Father who is in secret;and your Father, who sees in secret, will reward you.

Léctio Actuum Apostolórum

Act 2:14-21.

Deo gratias.

Lesson from the Acts of Apostles

Acts 2:14-21.

In those days, Peter, standing up with the Eleven, lifted up his voice and spoke out to them: Men of Judea and all you who dwell in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and give ear to my words. These men are not drunk, as you suppose, for it is only the third hour of the day. But this is what was spoken through the prophet Joel: ‘And it shall come to pass in the last days, says the Lord, that I will pour forth of My Spirit upon all flesh; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams. And moreover upon My servants and upon My handmaids in those days will I pour forth of My Spirit, and they shall prophesy. And I will show wonders in the heavens above and signs on the earth beneath, blood and fire and vapor of smoke. The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the day of the Lord comes, the great and manifest day. And it shall come to pass that whoever calls upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.’

Thanks be to God.

Léctio Actuum Apostolórum

Acts 5:12-16

Lesson from the Acts of Apostles

Acts 5:12-16

In those days, by the hands of the Apostles many signs and wonders were done among the people. And with one accord they all would meet in Solomon’s portico; but of the rest, no one dared to associate with them, yet the people made much of them. And the multitude of men and women who believed in the Lord increased still more, so that they carried the sick into the streets and laid them on beds and pallets that, when Peter passed, his shadow at least might fall on some of them. And there came also multitudes from the towns near Jerusalem, bringing the sick and those troubled with unclean spirits, and they were all cured.

Holy Spirit! Lord of light!

From Thy clear celestial height, Thy pure, beaming radiance give:

Come, Thou, Father of the poor!

Come, with treasures which endure!

Come, Thou light of all that live!

Thou of all consolers best,

Visiting the troubled breast,

Dost refreshing peace bestow:

Thou in toil art comfort sweet;

Pleasant coolness in the heat;

Solace in the midst of woe.

Light immortal! Light divine!

Visit Thou these hearts of Thine, And our inmost being fill.

If Thou take Thy grace away,

Nothing pure in man will stay;

All his good is turn’d to ill.

Heal our wounds - our strength renew;

On our dryness pour Thy dew;

Wash the stains of guilt away:

Bend the stubborn heart and will;

Melt the frozen, warm the chill;

Guide the steps that go astray.

Thou, on those who evermore

Thee confess and Thee adore,

In Thy sevenfold gifts descend.

Give them comfort when they die;

Give them life with Thee on high;

Give them joys which never end.

Amen. Alleluia.

Sequéntia ☩ sancti Evangélii secúndum Joánnem

Joannes 6:44-52

In illo témpore: Dixit Jesus turbis Judæórum: Nemo potest veníre ad me, nisi Pater, qui misit me, tráxerit eum: et ego resuscitábo eum in novíssimo die. Est scriptum in Prophétis: Et erunt omnes docíbiles Dei. Omnis, qui audívit a Patre et dídicit, venit ad me. Non quia Patrem vidit quisquam, nisi is, qui est a Deo, hic vidit Patrem. Amen, amen, dico vobis: qui credit in me, habet vitam ætérnam.

Continuation ☩ of the Holy Gospel according to John

John 6:44-52.

At that time, Jesus said to the Jews: No one can come to Me unless the Father Who sent Me draw him, and I will raise him up on the last day. It is written in the Prophets, “And they all shall be taught of God.” Everyone who has listened to the Father, and has learned, comes to Me; not that anyone has seen the Father except Him Who is from God, He has seen the Father. Amen, amen, I say to you, he who believes in Me has life everlasting. I am the bread of life. Your fathers ate the manna in the desert, and have died. This is the bread that comes down from heaven, so that if anyone eat of it he will not die. I am the living bread that has come down from heaven. If anyone eat of this bread he shall live forever; and the bread that I will give is My flesh for the life of the world.
