First ReadingJoshua 24:1-2a, 15-17, 18b

From the Book of Joshua

1Joshua gathered all the tribes of Israel to Shechem, and called for the elders of Israel, for their heads, for their judges, and for their officers;and they presented themselves before God.2Joshua said to all the people,“The Lord, the God of Israel, says, ‘Your fathers lived of old time beyond the River, even Terah, the father of Abraham, and the father of Nahor. They served other gods. verses 3–14 are not read15If it seems evil to you to serve the Lord, choose today whom you will serve;whether the gods which your fathers servedthat were beyond the River,or the gods of the Amorites,in whose land you dwell;but as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.”

16The people answered,“Far be it from us that we should forsake the Lord,to serve other gods;17for it is the Lord our God who brought usand our fathers up out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage, and who did those great signs in our sight, and preserved us in all the way in which we went, and among all the peoples through the middle of whom we passed.18The Lord drove out from before us all the peoples, even the Amorites who lived in the land. Therefore we also will serve the Lord;for he is our God.”

Responsorial PsalmPsalm 34:2-3, 16-17, 18-19, 20-21

2I will bless the Lord at all times. His praise will always be in my mouth.3My soul shall boast in the Lord. The humble shall hear of it and be glad.

16The Lord’s eyes are toward the righteous. His ears listen to their cry.17The Lord’s face is against those who do evil,to cut off their memory from the earth.

18The righteous cry, and the Lord hears, and delivers them out of all their troubles.19The Lord is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves those who have a crushed spirit.

20Many are the afflictions of the righteous, but the Lord delivers him out of them all.21He protects all of his bones. Not one of them is broken.

Second ReadingEphesians 5:21-32

From the Letter of Paul to the Ephesians

or Ephesians 5:2a, 25-32

21subjecting yourselves to one another in the fear of Christ.

22Wives, be subject to your own husbands, as to the Lord.23For the husband is the head of the wife,as Christ also is the head of the assembly, being himself the savior of the body.24But as the assembly is subject to Christ,so let the wives also be to their own husbands in everything.

25Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the assemblyand gave himself up for her,26that he might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word,27that he might present the assembly to himself gloriously, not having spot or wrinkle or any such thing, but that she should be holy and without defect.28Even so husbands also ought to love their own wives as their own bodies. He who loves his own wife loves himself.29For no man ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it,even as the Lord also does the assembly,30because we are members of his body,of his flesh and bones.31“For this cause a man will leave his fatherand mother and will be joined to his wife. Then the two will become one flesh.”32This mystery is great, but I speak concerning Christ and the assembly.

GospelJohn 6:60-69

From the Gospel according to John

60Therefore many of his disciples, when they heard this, said, “This is a hard saying!Who can listen to it?”

61But Jesus knowing in himselfthat his disciples murmured at this, said to them, “Does this cause you to stumble?62Then what if you would see the Son of Man ascending to where he was before?63It is the spirit who gives life. The flesh profits nothing. The words that I speak to you are spirit, and are life.64But there are some of you who don’t believe.”For Jesus knew from the beginningwho they were who didn’t believe, and who it was who would betray him.65He said, “For this cause I have said to youthat no one can come to me,unless it is given to him by my Father.”

66At this, many of his disciples went backand walked no more with him.67Jesus said therefore to the twelve,“You don’t also want to go away, do you?”

68Simon Peter answered him, “Lord, to whom would we go?You have the words of eternal life.69We have come to believe and know that you are the Christ, the Son of the living God.”

EpistleLectio

Léctio Epístolæ beáti Pauli Apóstoli ad Corínthios

2 Cor 3:4-9

Lesson from the second letter of St. Paul the Apostle to the Corinthians

2 Cor. 3:4-9

Brethren: Such is the assurance I have through Christ toward God. Not that we are sufficient of ourselves to think anything, as from ourselves, but our sufficiency is from God. He also it is Who has made us fit ministers of the new covenant, not of the letter but of the spirit; for the letter kills, but the spirit gives life. Now if the ministration of death, which was engraved in letters upon stones, was inaugurated in such glory that the children of Israel could not look steadfastly upon the face of Moses on account of the transient glory that shone upon it, shall not the ministration of the spirit be still more glorious? For if there is glory in the ministration that condemned, much more does the ministration that justifies abound in glory.

GospelEvangelium

Sequéntia ☩ sancti Evangélii secúndum Lucam

Luc 10:23-37

At ille dixit: Qui fecit misericórdiam in illum. Et ait illi Jesus: Vade, et tu fac simíliter.

Continuation ☩ of the Holy Gospel according to Luke

Luke 10:23-37

At that time, Jesus said to His disciples: Blessed are the eyes that see what you see! For I say to you, many prophets and kings have desired to see what you see, and they have not seen it; and to hear what you hear, and they have not heard it. And behold, a certain lawyer got up to test Him, saying, Master, what must I do to gain eternal life? But He said to him, What is written in the Law? How do you read? He answered and said, You shall love the Lord your God with your whole heart, and with your whole soul, and with your whole strength, and with your whole mind; and your neighbor as yourself. And He said to him, You have answered rightly; do this and you shall live. But he, wishing to justify himself, said to Jesus, And who is my neighbor? Jesus answered and said, A certain man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and he fell in with robbers, who after both stripping him and beating him went their way, leaving him half-dead. But, as it happened, a certain priest was going down the same way; and when he saw him, he passed by. And likewise a Levite also, when he was near the place and saw him, passed by. But a certain Samaritan as he journeyed came upon him, and seeing him, was moved with compassion. And he went up to him and bound up his wounds, pouring on oil and wine. And setting him on his own beast, he brought him to an inn and took care of him. And the next day he took out two denarii and gave them to the innkeeper and said, ‘Take care of him; and whatever more you spend, I, on my way back, will repay you.’ Which of these three, in your opinion, proved himself neighbor to him who fell among the robbers? And he said, He who took pity on him. And Jesus said to him, Go and do also in like manner.

Exod 32:11 32:13; 32:14

Moses prayed in the sight of the Lord his God and said, Why, O Lord, is Your indignation enkindled against Your people? Let the anger of Your mind cease; remember Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, to whom You swore to give a land flowing with milk and honey. And the Lord was appeased from doing the evil which He had spoken of doing against His people.

PrefacePrefatio

Holy Trinity

It is truly meet and just, right and for our salvation, that we should at all times, and in all places, give thanks unto Thee, O holy Lord, Father almighty, everlasting God; Who, together with Thine only-begotten Son, and the Holy Ghost, art one God, one Lord: not in the oneness of a single Person, but in the Trinity of one substance. For what we believe by Thy revelation of Thy glory, the same do we believe of Thy Son, the same of the Holy Ghost, without difference or separation. So that in confessing the true and everlasting Godhead, distinction in persons, unity in essence, and equality in majesty may be adored. Which the Angels and Archangels, the Cherubim also and Seraphim do praise: who cease not daily to cry out, with one voice saying:

Ps 103:13-15

The earth is replete with the fruit of Your works, O Lord; You produce bread from the earth, and wine to gladden men’s hearts, so that their faces gleam with oil, and bread fortifies the hearts of men.
