First ReadingActs 22:30; 23:6-11

From the Acts of the Apostles

30But on the next day, desiring to know the truth about why he was accused by the Jews,he freed him from the bondsand commanded the chief priestsand all the council to come together, and brought Paul down and set him before them.

some verses are not read6But when Paul perceived that the one part were Sadduceesand the other Pharisees,he cried out in the council,“Men and brothers,I am a Pharisee, a son of Pharisees.Concerning the hopeand resurrection of the dead I am being judged!”

7When he had said this,an argument arose between the Pharisees and Sadducees, and the crowd was divided.8For the Sadducees say that there is no resurrection, nor angel, nor spirit;but the Pharisees confess all of these.9A great clamor arose, and some of the scribes of the Pharisees’ part stood up,and contended, saying,“We find no evil in this man.But if a spirit or angel has spoken to him, let’s not fight against God!”

10When a great argument arose, the commanding officer, fearing that Paul would be torn in pieces by them, commanded the soldiers to go downand take him by force from among themand bring him into the barracks.

11The following night, the Lord stood by him and said,“Cheer up, Paul, for as you have testified about me at Jerusalem,so you must testify also at Rome.”

Responsorial PsalmPsalm 16:1-2a and 5, 7-8, 9-10, 11

1Preserve me, God, for I take refuge in you.2My soul, you have said to the Lord, “You are my Lord.Apart from you I have no good thing.”5The Lord assigned my portion and my cup.You made my lot secure.

7I will bless the Lord, who has given me counsel.Yes, my heart instructs me in the night seasons.8I have set the Lord always before me.Because he is at my right hand, I shall not be moved.

9Therefore my heart is glad, and my tongue rejoices. My body shall also dwell in safety.10For you will not leave my soul in Sheol, neither will you allow your holy one to see corruption.

11You will show me the path of life.In your presence is fullness of joy.In your right hand there are pleasures forever more.

GospelJohn 17:20-26

From the Gospel according to John

20“Not for these only do I pray, but for those alsowho will believe in me through their word,21that they may all be one;even as you, Father, are in me, and I in you, that they also may be one in us;that the world may believe that you sent me.22The glory which you have given me,I have given to them, that they may be one, even as we are one,23I in them, and you in me,that they may be perfected into one, that the world may know that you sent me and loved them, even as you loved me.24Father, I desire that they alsowhom you have given me be with me where I am,that they may see my glory which you have given me,for you loved me before the foundation of the world.25Righteous Father, the world hasn’t known you, but I knew you;and these knew that you sent me.26I made known to them your name, and will make it known;that the love withwhich you loved me may be in them, and I in them.”

Lesson from the book of Ecclesiasticus

Sir 31:8-11

Happy the man found without fault, who turns not aside after gain, nor puts his trust in money nor in treasures! Who is he, that we may praise him? For he has done wonders in his life. He has been tested by gold and come off safe, and this remains his glory forever; he could have sinned but did not, could have done evil but would not, so that his possessions are secure in the Lord, and the assembly of the Saints shall recount his alms.

Sequéntia ☩ sancti Evangélii secúndum Lucam

Luc 12:35-40

Continuation ☩ of the Holy Gospel according to Luke

Luke 12:35-40

At that time, Jesus said to His disciples, Let your loins be girt about and your lamps burning, and you yourselves like men waiting for their master’s return from the wedding; so that when he comes and knocks, they may straight-way open to him. Blessed are those servants whom the master, on his return, shall find watching. Amen I say to you, he will gird himself, and will make them recline at table, and will come and serve them. And if he comes in the second watch, and if in the third, and finds them so, blessed are those servants! But of this be assured, that if the householder had known at what hour the thief was coming, he would certainly have watched, and not have let his house be broken into. You also must be ready, because at an hour that you do not expect, the Son of Man is coming.

PrefacePrefatio

Ascension

It is truly meet and just, right and for our salvation, that we should at all times, and in all places, give thanks unto Thee, O holy Lord, Father almighty, everlasting God: through Christ our Lord. Who, after His Resurrection, appeared openly to all His disciples, and, while they looked on, was taken up into heaven, that He might grant unto us to be sharers in His own divinity. And therefore, with Angels and Archangels, with Thrones and Dominations, and with all the hosts of the heavenly army, we sing the hymn of Thy glory, evermore saying:
