First ReadingExodus 11:10—12:14

From the Book of Exodus

10Moses and Aaron did all these wonders before Pharaoh, but the Lord hardened Pharaoh’s heart, and he didn’t let the children of Israel go out of his land.

1The Lord spoke to Mosesand Aaron in the land of Egypt, saying,2“This month shall be to you the beginning of months. It shall be the first month of the year to you.3Speak to all the congregation of Israel, saying, ‘On the tenth day of this month, they shall take to them every man a lamb, according to their fathers’ houses,a lamb for a household;4and if the household is too little for a lamb, then he and his neighbor next to his house shall take one according to the number of the souls. You shall make your count for the lamb according to what everyone can eat.5Your lamb shall be without defect, a male a year old.You shall take it from the sheep or from the goats.6You shall keep it until the fourteenth day of the same month;and the whole assembly of the congregation of Israel shall kill it at evening.7They shall take some of the blood, and put it on the two door posts and on the lintel,on the houses in which they shall eat it.8They shall eat the meat in that night, roasted with fire, with unleavened bread. They shall eat it with bitter herbs.9Don’t eat it raw, nor boiled at all with water, but roasted with fire;with its head, its legs and its inner parts.10You shall let nothing of it remain until the morning;but that which remains of it until the morning you shall burn with fire.11This is how you shall eat it:with your belt on your waist, your sandals on your feet, and your staff in your hand;and you shall eat it in haste:it is the Lord’s Passover.12For I will go through the land of Egypt in that night, and will strike all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, both man and animal.I will execute judgments against all the gods of Egypt.I am the Lord.13The blood shall be to you for a token on the houses where you are. When I see the blood,I will pass over you,and no plague will be on you to destroy youwhen I strike the land of Egypt.14This day shall be a memorial for you.You shall keep it as a feast to the Lord. You shall keep it as a feast throughout your generations by an ordinance forever.

Responsorial PsalmPsalm 116:12-13, 15 and 16bc, 17-18

12What will I give to the Lord for all his benefits toward me?13I will take the cup of salvation, and call on the Lord’s name.

15Precious in the Lord’s sight is the death of his saints.16Lord, truly I am your servant.I am your servant, the son of your servant girl. You have freed me from my chains.

17I will offer to you the sacrifice of thanksgiving, and will call on the Lord’s name.18I will pay my vows to the Lord, yes, in the presence of all his people,

GospelMatthew 12:1-8

From the Gospel according to Matthew

1At that time, Jesus went on the Sabbath day through the grain fields. His disciples were hungryand began to pluck heads of grain and to eat.2But the Pharisees, when they saw it, said to him,“Behold, your disciples do what is not lawful to do on the Sabbath.”

3But he said to them,“Haven’t you read what David did when he was hungry, and those who were with him:4how he entered into God’s house and ate the show bread, which was not lawful for him to eat,nor for those who were with him,but only for the priests?5Or have you not read in the lawthat on the Sabbath day the priests in the temple profane the Sabbath and are guiltless?6But I tell you that one greater than the temple is here.7But if you had known what this means,‘I desire mercy, and not sacrifice,’you wouldn’t have condemned the guiltless.8For the Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath.”

Léctio Epístolæ beáti Pauli Apóstoli ad Romános

Rom 8:12-17

Lesson from the letter of St. Paul the Apostle to the Romans

Rom 8:12-17

Brethren: We are debtors, not to the flesh, that we should live according to the flesh, for if you live according to the flesh you will die; but if by the spirit you put to death the deeds of the flesh, you will live. For whoever are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God. Now you have not received a spirit of bondage so as to be again in fear, but you have received a spirit of adoption as sons, by virtue of which we cry, Abba! Father! The Spirit Himself gives testimony to our spirit that we are sons of God. But if we are sons, we are heirs also: heirs indeed of God and joint heirs with Christ.

Sequéntia ☩ sancti Evangélii secúndum Lucam

Luc 16:1-9

Ait autem víllicus intra se: Quid fáciam, quia dóminus meus aufert a me villicatiónem? fódere non váleo, mendicáre erubésco. Scio, quid fáciam, ut, cum amótus fúero a villicatióne, recípiant me in domos suas. Convocátis itaque síngulis debitóribus dómini sui, dicébat primo: Quantum debes dómino meo? At ille dixit: Centum cados ólei.

Continuation ☩ of the Holy Gospel according to Luke

Luke 16:1-9

At that time, Jesus spoke to His disciples this parable: There was a certain rich man who had a steward, who was reported to him as squandering his possessions. And he called him and said to him, ‘What is this that I hear of you? Make an accounting of your stewardship, for you can be steward no longer.’ And the steward said within himself, ‘What shall I do, seeing that my master is taking away the stewardship from me? To dig I am not able; to beg I am ashamed. I know what I shall do, that when I am removed from my stewardship they may receive me into their houses.’ And he summoned each of his master’s debtors and said to the first, ‘How much do you owe my master?’ And he said, ‘A hundred jars of oil.’ He said to him, ‘Take your bond and sit down at once and write fifty.’ Then he said to another, ‘How much do you owe?’ He said, ‘A hundred kors of wheat.’ He said to him, ‘Take your bond and write eighty.’ And the master commended the unjust steward, in that he had acted prudently; for the children of this world, in relation to their own generation, are more prudent than the children of the light. And I say to you, make friends for yourselves with the mammon of wickedness, so that when you fail they may receive you into the everlasting dwellings.

It is truly meet and just, and profitable unto salvation, that we should at all times, and in all places, give thanks to Thee, O Holy Lord, Father Almighty, eternal God, through Christ, our Lord. And do Thou command that it be permitted us to join with them in confessing Thee, while we say with lowly praise:
