First ReadingJoshua 3:7-10a, 11, 13-17

From the Book of Joshua

7The Lord said to Joshua,“Today I will begin to magnify you in the sight of all Israel, that they may know that as I was with Moses,so I will be with you.8You shall command the priestswho bear the ark of the covenant, saying, ‘When you come to the brink of the waters of the Jordan, you shall stand still in the Jordan.’”

9Joshua said to the children of Israel,“Come here, and hear the words of the Lord your God.”10Joshua said, “By this you shall knowthat the living God is among you,and that he will without fail drive the Canaanite, the Hittite, the Hivite, the Perizzite, the Girgashite, the Amorite, and the Jebusite out from before you.11Behold, the ark of the covenant of the Lord of all the earth passes over before you into the Jordan. verse 12 is not read13It shall be that when the soles of the feet of the priestswho bear the ark of GOD,the Lord of all the earth, rest in the waters of the Jordan, that the waters of the Jordan will be cut off.The waters that come down from above shall stand in one heap.”

14When the people moved from their tents to pass over the Jordan, the priests who bore the ark of the covenant being before the people,15and when those who bore the ark had come to the Jordan, and the feet of the priestswho bore the ark had dipped in the edge of the water (for the Jordan overflows all its banks all the time of harvest),16the waters which came down from above stood, and rose up in one heap a great way off,at Adam, the city that is beside Zarethan;and those that went down toward the sea of the Arabah, even the Salt Sea,were wholly cut off. Then the people passed over near Jericho.17The priests who bore the ark of the Lord’s covenant stood firm on dry ground in the middle of the Jordan;and all Israel crossed over on dry ground, until all the nation had passed completely over the Jordan.

Responsorial PsalmPsalm 114:1-2, 3-4, 5-6

1When Israel went out of Egypt, the house of Jacob from a people of foreign language,2Judah became his sanctuary,Israel his dominion.

3The sea saw it, and fled. The Jordan was driven back.4The mountains skipped like rams, the little hills like lambs.

5What was it, you sea, that you fled? You Jordan, that you turned back?6You mountains, that you skipped like rams? You little hills, like lambs?

GospelMatthew 18:21—19:1

From the Gospel according to Matthew

21Then Peter came and said to him,“Lord, how often shall my brother sin against me,and I forgive him?Until seven times?”

22Jesus said to him,“I don’t tell you until seven times, but, until seventy times seven.23Therefore the Kingdom of Heaven is like a certain kingwho wanted to settle accounts with his servants.24When he had begun to settle, one was brought to him who owed him ten thousand talents.25But because he couldn’t pay,his lord commanded him to be sold, with his wife, his children, and all that he had,and payment to be made.26The servant therefore fell down and knelt before him, saying, ‘Lord, have patience with me,and I will repay you all!’27The lord of that servant, being moved with compassion, released him and forgave him the debt.

28“But that servant went outand found one of his fellow servantswho owed him one hundred denarii, and he grabbed him and took him by the throat, saying, ‘Pay me what you owe!’

29“So his fellow servant fell down at his feet and begged him, saying, ‘Have patience with me,and I will repay you!’30He would not, but wentand cast him into prison until he should pay back that which was due.31So when his fellow servants saw what was done, they were exceedingly sorry, and came and told their lord all that was done.32Then his lord called him in and said to him,‘You wicked servant!I forgave you all that debt because you begged me.33Shouldn’t you also have had mercy on your fellow servant, even as I had mercy on you?’34His lord was angry, and delivered him to the tormentors until he should pay allthat was due to him.35So my heavenly Father will also do to you,if you don’t each forgive your brother from your hearts for his misdeeds.”

1When Jesus had finished these words,he departed from Galileeand came into the borders of Judea beyond the Jordan.

EpistleLectio

Léctio Epístolæ beáti Pauli Apóstoli ad Corínthios

2 Cor 3:4-9

Lesson from the second letter of St. Paul the Apostle to the Corinthians

2 Cor. 3:4-9

Brethren: Such is the assurance I have through Christ toward God. Not that we are sufficient of ourselves to think anything, as from ourselves, but our sufficiency is from God. He also it is Who has made us fit ministers of the new covenant, not of the letter but of the spirit; for the letter kills, but the spirit gives life. Now if the ministration of death, which was engraved in letters upon stones, was inaugurated in such glory that the children of Israel could not look steadfastly upon the face of Moses on account of the transient glory that shone upon it, shall not the ministration of the spirit be still more glorious? For if there is glory in the ministration that condemned, much more does the ministration that justifies abound in glory.

Sequéntia ☩ sancti Evangélii secúndum Lucam

Luc 10:23-37

At ille dixit: Qui fecit misericórdiam in illum. Et ait illi Jesus: Vade, et tu fac simíliter.

Continuation ☩ of the Holy Gospel according to Luke

Luke 10:23-37

At that time, Jesus said to His disciples: Blessed are the eyes that see what you see! For I say to you, many prophets and kings have desired to see what you see, and they have not seen it; and to hear what you hear, and they have not heard it. And behold, a certain lawyer got up to test Him, saying, Master, what must I do to gain eternal life? But He said to him, What is written in the Law? How do you read? He answered and said, You shall love the Lord your God with your whole heart, and with your whole soul, and with your whole strength, and with your whole mind; and your neighbor as yourself. And He said to him, You have answered rightly; do this and you shall live. But he, wishing to justify himself, said to Jesus, And who is my neighbor? Jesus answered and said, A certain man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and he fell in with robbers, who after both stripping him and beating him went their way, leaving him half-dead. But, as it happened, a certain priest was going down the same way; and when he saw him, he passed by. And likewise a Levite also, when he was near the place and saw him, passed by. But a certain Samaritan as he journeyed came upon him, and seeing him, was moved with compassion. And he went up to him and bound up his wounds, pouring on oil and wine. And setting him on his own beast, he brought him to an inn and took care of him. And the next day he took out two denarii and gave them to the innkeeper and said, ‘Take care of him; and whatever more you spend, I, on my way back, will repay you.’ Which of these three, in your opinion, proved himself neighbor to him who fell among the robbers? And he said, He who took pity on him. And Jesus said to him, Go and do also in like manner.

Exod 32:11 32:13; 32:14

Moses prayed in the sight of the Lord his God and said, Why, O Lord, is Your indignation enkindled against Your people? Let the anger of Your mind cease; remember Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, to whom You swore to give a land flowing with milk and honey. And the Lord was appeased from doing the evil which He had spoken of doing against His people.
