First ReadingJeremiah 23:5-8

From the Book of Jeremiah

5“Behold, the days come,” says the Lord,“that I will raise to David a righteous Branch;and he will reign as king and deal wisely, and will execute justice and righteousness in the land.6In his days Judah will be saved, and Israel will dwell safely. This is his name by which he will be called:The Lord our righteousness.

7“Therefore, behold, the days come,” says the Lord,“that they will no more say,‘As the Lord lives, who brought up the children of Israel out of the land of Egypt;’8but, ‘As the Lord lives, who brought up andwho led the offspring of the house of Israel out of the north country, and from all the countries where I had driven them.’Then they will dwell in their own land.”

Responsorial PsalmPsalm 72:1-2, 12-13, 18-19

1God, give the king your justice;your righteousness to the royal son.2He will judge your people with righteousness, and your poor with justice.

12For he will deliver the needy when he cries;the poor, who has no helper.13He will have pity on the poor and needy. He will save the souls of the needy.

18Praise be to the Lord God, the God of Israel, who alone does marvelous deeds.19Blessed be his glorious name forever!Let the whole earth be filled with his glory!Amen and amen.

GospelMatthew 1:18-25

From the Gospel according to Matthew

18Now the birth of Jesus Christ was like this:After his mother, Mary, was engaged to Joseph, before they came together, she was found pregnant by the Holy Spirit.19Joseph, her husband, being a righteous man,and not willing to make her a public example, intended to put her away secretly.20But when he thought about these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, don’t be afraid to take to yourself Mary as your wife, for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit.21She shall give birth to a son.You shall name him Jesus, for it is he who shall save his people from their sins.”

22Now all this has happened that it might be fulfilledwhich was spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying,

23“Behold, the virgin shall be with child, and shall give birth to a son. They shall call his name Immanuel,”which is, being interpreted, “God with us.”

24Joseph arose from his sleep, and did as the angel of the Lord commanded him,and took his wife to himself;25and didn’t know her sexually until she had given birth to her firstborn son.He named him Jesus.

Léctio Isaíæ Prophétæ

Is 11:1-5

Lesson from the book of Isaias

Isa 11:1-5

Thus says the Lord God: A shoot shall sprout from the stump of Jesse, and from his roots a bud shall blossom. The spirit of the Lord shall rest upon Him: a spirit of wisdom and of understanding, a spirit of knowledge and of piety, and His delight shall be the fear of the Lord. Not by appearance shall He judge, nor by hearsay shall He decide, but He shall judge the poor with justice, and decide aright for the land’s afflicted. He shall strike the ruthless with the rod of His mouth, and with the breath of His lips He shall slay the wicked. Justice shall be the band around His waist, and faithfulness a belt upon His hips.

Sequéntia ☩ sancti Evangélii secúndum Lucam

Luc 1:39-47

Continuation ☩ of the Holy Gospel according to Luke

Luke 1:39-47

At that time, Mary arose and went with haste into the hill country, to a town of Juda. And she entered the house of Zachary and saluted Elizabeth. And it came to pass, when Elizabeth heard the greeting of Mary, that the babe in her womb leapt. And Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit, and cried out with a loud voice, saying, Blessed are you among women and blessed is the fruit of your womb! And how have I deserved that the Mother of my Lord should come to me? For behold, the moment that the sound of your greeting came to my ears, the babe in my womb leapt for joy. And blessed is she who has believed, because the things promised her by the Lord shall be accomplished. And Mary said, My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my Saviour.
