First Reading2 Chronicles 24:18-22

From the Second Book of Chronicles

18They abandoned the house of the Lord, the God of their fathers, and served the Asherah poles and the idols,so wrath came on Judahand Jerusalem for this their guiltiness.19Yet he sent prophets to them to bring them again to the Lord, and they testified against them;but they would not listen.

20The Spirit of God came on Zechariah the son of Jehoiada the priest;and he stood above the people, and said to them, “God says,‘Why do you disobey the Lord’s commandments,so that you can’t prosper?Because you have forsaken the Lord,he has also forsaken you.’”

21They conspired against him,and stoned him with stones at the commandment of the king in the court of the Lord’s house.22Thus Joash the king didn’t remember the kindnesswhich Jehoiada his father had done to him,but killed his son. When he died, he said,“May the Lord look at it, and repay it.”

Responsorial PsalmPsalm 31:3cd-4, 6 and 8ab, 16bc and 17

3Bow down your ear to me.Deliver me speedily.Be to me a strong rock,a house of defense to save me.4For you are my rock and my fortress, therefore for your name’s sake lead me and guide me.

6Into your hand I commend my spirit. You redeem me, Lord, God of truth.8I will be glad and rejoice in your loving kindness, for you have seen my affliction. You have known my soul in adversities.

16My times are in your hand.Deliver me from the hand of my enemies, and from those who persecute me.17Make your face to shine on your servant.Save me in your loving kindness.

GospelMatthew 10:17-22

From the Gospel according to Matthew

17But beware of men,for they will deliver you up to councils, and in their synagogues they will scourge you.18Yes, and you will be brought before governorsand kings for my sake, for a testimony to them and to the nations.19But when they deliver you up,don’t be anxious how or what you will say,for it will be given you in that hour what you will say.20For it is not you who speak, but the Spirit of your Father who speaks in you.

21“Brother will deliver up brother to death, and the father his child.Children will rise up against parentsand cause them to be put to death.22You will be hated by all men for my name’s sake, but he who endures to the end will be saved.

EpistleLectio

Léctio Isaíæ Prophétæ.

Isa 58:1-9

Lesson from the book of Isaias

Isa 58:1-9

Thus says the Lord God: Cry out full-throated and unsparingly, lift up your voice like a trumpet blast; tell My people their wickedness, and the house of Jacob their sins. They seek Me day after day, and desire to know My ways, like a nation that has done what is just and not abandoned the law of their God; they ask Me to declare what is due them, pleased to gain access to God. ‘Why do we fast, and You do not see it? afflict ourselves, and You take no note of it?’ Lo, on your fast day you carry out your own pursuits, and drive all your laborers. Yes, your fast ends in quarreling and fighting, striking with wicked fist. Would that today you might fast so as to make your voice heard on high! Is this the manner of fasting I wish, of keeping a day of penance: that a man bow his head like a reed, and lie in sackcloth and ashes? Do you call this a fast, a day acceptable to the Lord? This, rather, is the fasting that I wish: releasing those bound unjustly, untying the thongs of the yoke; setting free the oppressed, breaking every yoke; sharing your bread with the hungry, sheltering the oppressed and the homeless; clothing the naked when you see them, and not turning your back on your own. Then your light shall break forth like the dawn, and your wound shall quickly be healed; your vindication shall go before you, and the glory of the Lord shall be your rear guard. Then you shall call, and the Lord will answer, you shall cry for help, and He will say: ‘Here I am!’ For I, the Lord your God, am merciful.

GospelEvangelium

Sequéntia ☩ sancti Evangélii secúndum Matthǽum.

Matt 5:43-48; 6:1-4

Continuation ☩ of the Holy Gospel according to Matthew

Matt 5:43-48; 6:1-4

At that time, Jesus said to His disciples, You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor, and shall hate your enemy.’ But I say to you, love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who persecute and calumniate you, so that you may be children of your Father in heaven, Who makes His sun to rise on the good and the evil, and sends rain on the just and the unjust. For if you love those that love you, what reward shall you have? Do not even the publicans do that? And if you salute your brethren only, what are you doing more than others? Do not even the Gentiles do that? You therefore are to be perfect, even as your heavenly Father is perfect. Take heed not to do your good before men, in order to be seen by them; otherwise you shall have no reward with your Father in heaven. Therefore when you give alms, do not sound a trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and streets, in order that they may be honored by men. Amen I say to you, they have received their reward. But when you give alms, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your alms may be given in secret; and your Father, Who sees in secret, will reward you.

Lent

It is truly meet and just, right and for our salvation, that we should at all times, and in all places, give thanks unto Thee, O holy Lord, Father almighty, everlasting God; Who by this bodily fast, dost curb our vices, dost lift up our minds and bestow on us strength and rewards; through Christ our Lord. Through whom the Angels praise Thy Majesty, the Dominations worship it, the Powers stand in awe. The Heavens and the heavenly hosts together with the blessed Seraphim in triumphant chorus unite to celebrate it. Together with these we entreat Thee that Thou mayest bid our voices also to be admitted while we say with lowly praise:
