First ReadingActs 12:1-11

From the Acts of the Apostles

1Now about that time,King Herod stretched out his hands to oppress some of the assembly.2He killed James, the brother of John, with the sword.3When he saw that it pleased the Jews,he proceeded to seize Peter also. This was during the days of unleavened bread.4When he had arrested him,he put him in prisonand delivered him to four squads of four soldiers each to guard him, intending to bring him out to the people after the Passover.5Peter therefore was kept in the prison, but constant prayer was made by the assembly to God for him.6The same night when Herod was about to bring him out,Peter was sleeping between two soldiers, bound with two chains.Guards in front of the door kept the prison.

7And behold, an angel of the Lord stood by him,and a light shone in the cell.He struck Peter on the side and woke him up,saying, “Stand up quickly!”His chains fell off his hands.8The angel said to him,“Get dressed and put on your sandals.”He did so. He said to him,“Put on your cloak and follow me.”9And he went out and followed him.He didn’t knowthat what was being done by the angel was real, but thought he saw a vision.10When they were past the first and the second guard, they came to the iron gate that leads into the city, which opened to them by itself. They went out and went down one street, and immediately the angel departed from him.

11When Peter had come to himself,he said, “Now I truly knowthat the Lord has sent out his angeland delivered me out of the hand of Herod, and from everything the Jewish people were expecting.”

Responsorial PsalmPsalm 34:2-3, 4-5, 6-7, 8-9

2I will bless the Lord at all times. His praise will always be in my mouth.3My soul shall boast in the Lord. The humble shall hear of it and be glad.

4Oh magnify the Lord with me.Let’s exalt his name together.5I sought the Lord, and he answered me,and delivered me from all my fears.

6They looked to him, and were radiant.Their faces shall never be covered with shame.7This poor man cried, and the Lord heard him,and saved him out of all his troubles.

8The Lord’s angel encamps around those who fear him,and delivers them.9Oh taste and see that the Lord is good.Blessed is the man who takes refuge in him.

Second Reading2 Timothy 4:6-8, 17-18

From the Second Letter of Paul to Timothy

6For I am already being offered, and the time of my departure has come.7I have fought the good fight.I have finished the course.I have kept the faith.8From now on, the crown of righteousness is stored up for me,which the Lord, the righteous judge, will give to me on that day;and not to me only, but also to all those who have loved his appearing. verses 9–16 are not read17But the Lord stood by me and strengthened me,that through me the message might be fully proclaimed, and that all the Gentiles might hear.So I was delivered out of the mouth of the lion.18And the Lord will deliver me from every evil workand will preserve me for his heavenly Kingdom. To him be the glory forever and ever. Amen.

GospelMatthew 16:13-19

From the Gospel according to Matthew

13Now when Jesus came into the parts of Caesarea Philippi,he asked his disciples, saying, “Who do men say that I,the Son of Man, am?”

14They said, “Some say John the Baptizer, some, Elijah, and others,Jeremiah or one of the prophets.”

15He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?”

16Simon Peter answered,“You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.”

17Jesus answered him,“Blessed are you, Simon Bar Jonah, for flesh and blood has not revealed this to you,but my Father who is in heaven.18I also tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my assembly, and the gates of Hades will not prevail against it.19I will give to you the keys of the Kingdom of Heaven, and whatever you bind on earth will have been bound in heaven;and whatever you release on earth will have been released in heaven.”

EpistleLectio

Léctio Epístolæ beáti Pauli Apóstoli ad Romános

Rom 6:3-11

Fratres: Quicúmque baptizáti sumus in Christo Jesu, in morte ipsíus baptizáti sumus.

Lesson from the letter of St. Paul the Apostle to the Romans

Rom 6:3-11.

Brethren: All we who have been baptized into Christ Jesus have been baptized into His death. For we were buried with Him by means of Baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ has arisen from the dead through the glory of the Father, so we also may walk in newness of life. For if we have been united with Him in the likeness of His death, we shall be so in the likeness of His resurrection also. For we know that our old self has been crucified with Him, in order that the body of sin may be destroyed, that we may no longer be slaves to sin; for he who is dead is acquitted of sin. But if we have died with Christ, we believe that we shall also live together with Christ; for we know that Christ, having risen from the dead, dies now no more, death shall no longer have dominion over Him. For the death that He died, He died to sin once for all, but the life that He lives, He lives unto God. Thus do you consider yourselves also as dead to sin, but alive to God in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Sequéntia ☩ sancti Evangélii secúndum Marcum

Marc 8:1-9

Continuation ☩ of the Holy Gospel according to Mark

Mark 8:1-9

At that time, when there was a great crowd with Jesus, and they had nothing to eat, He called His disciples together and said to them, I have compassion on the crowd, for behold, they have now been with Me three days, and have nothing to eat; and if I send them away to their homes fasting, they will faint on the way, for some of them have come from a distance. And His disciples answered Him, How will anyone be able to satisfy these with bread, here in a desert? And He asked them, How many loaves have you? And they said, Seven. And He bade the crowd recline on the ground. Then taking the seven loaves, He gave thanks, broke them and gave them to His disciples to distribute; and they set them before the crowd. And they had a few little fishes; and He blessed them, and ordered them to be distributed. And they ate and were satisfied; and they took up what was left of the fragments, seven baskets. Now those who had eaten were about four thousand. And He dismissed them.

PrefacePrefatio

Holy Trinity

It is truly meet and just, right and for our salvation, that we should at all times, and in all places, give thanks unto Thee, O holy Lord, Father almighty, everlasting God; Who, together with Thine only-begotten Son, and the Holy Ghost, art one God, one Lord: not in the oneness of a single Person, but in the Trinity of one substance. For what we believe by Thy revelation of Thy glory, the same do we believe of Thy Son, the same of the Holy Ghost, without difference or separation. So that in confessing the true and everlasting Godhead, distinction in persons, unity in essence, and equality in majesty may be adored. Which the Angels and Archangels, the Cherubim also and Seraphim do praise: who cease not daily to cry out, with one voice saying:
