First Reading1 Samuel 17:32-33, 37, 40-51

From the First Book of Samuel

32David said to Saul,“Let no man’s heart fail because of him.Your servant will go and fight with this Philistine.”

33Saul said to David,“You are not able to go against this Philistine to fight with him;for you are but a youth, and he a man of war from his youth.” verses 34–36 are not read37David said, “The Lord, who delivered me out of the paw of the lionand out of the paw of the bear, will deliver me out of the hand of this Philistine.”

Saul said to David, “Go!The Lord will be with you.”

verses 38–39 are not read40He took his staff in his hand, and chose for himself five smooth stones out of the brook, and put them in the pouch of his shepherd’s bag which he had.His sling was in his hand;and he came near to the Philistine.41The Philistine walked and came near to David;and the man who bore the shield went before him.42When the Philistine looked aroundand saw David, he disdained him;for he was but a youth, and ruddy, and had a good looking face.43The Philistine said to David,“Am I a dog, that you come to me with sticks?”The Philistine cursed David by his gods.44The Philistine said to David,“Come to me,and I will give your flesh to the birds of the skyand to the animals of the field.”

45Then David said to the Philistine,“You come to me with a sword, with a spear, and with a javelin;but I come to you in the name of the Lord of Armies, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied.46Today, the Lord will deliver you into my hand.I will strike you and take your head from off you.I will give the dead bodies of the army of the Philistines today to the birds of the skyand to the wild animals of the earth, that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel,47and that all this assembly may knowthat the Lord doesn’t save with sword and spear;for the battle is the Lord’s,and he will give you into our hand.”

48When the Philistine arose, and walked and came near to meet David,David hurriedand ran toward the army to meet the Philistine.49David put his hand in his bag, took a stone and slung it,and struck the Philistine in his forehead. The stone sank into his forehead, and he fell on his face to the earth.50So David prevailed over the Philistine with a sling and with a stone, and struck the Philistine and killed him;but there was no sword in David’s hand.51Then David ran, stood over the Philistine, took his sword, drew it out of its sheath, killed him, and cut off his head with it.

When the Philistines sawthat their champion was dead, they fled.

Responsorial PsalmPsalm 144:1b, 2, 9-10

1Blessed be the Lord, my rock, who trains my hands to war,and my fingers to battle—

2my loving kindness, my fortress,my high tower, my deliverer,my shield, and he in whom I take refuge, who subdues my people under me.

9I will sing a new song to you, God.On a ten-stringed lyre, I will sing praises to you.10You are he who gives salvation to kings, who rescues David, his servant, from the deadly sword.

GospelMark 3:1-6

From the Gospel according to Mark

1He entered again into the synagogue, and there was a man there whose hand was withered.2They watched him, whether he would heal him on the Sabbath day, that they might accuse him.3He said to the man whose hand was withered, “Stand up.”4He said to them, “Is it lawful on the Sabbath day to do good or to do harm?To save a life or to kill?”But they were silent.5When he had looked around at them with anger, being grieved at the hardening of their hearts,he said to the man,“Stretch out your hand.”He stretched it out,and his hand was restored as healthy as the other.6The Pharisees went out,and immediately conspired with the Herodians against him,how they might destroy him.

Léctio libri Sapiéntiæ

Sap 3:1-8

Lesson from the book of Wisdom

Wis 3:1-8

The souls of the just are in the hands of God, and no torment of death shall touch them. They seemed, in the view of the foolish, to be dead; and their passing away was judged an affliction, and their going forth from us, utter destruction. But they are in peace. For if before men, indeed, they be punished, yet is their hope full of immortality; chastised a little, they shall be greatly blessed, because God tried them and found them worthy of Himself. As gold in the furnace, He proved them, and as sacrificial offerings He took them to Himself. In the time of their visitation they shall shine, and shall dart about as sparks through stubble; they shall judge nations and rule over peoples, and the Lord shall be their King forever.

Sequéntia ☩ sancti Evangélii secúndum Lucam

Luc 21:9-19

In patiéntia vestra possidébitis ánimas vestras.

Continuation ☩ of the Holy Gospel according to Luke

Luke 21:9-19

At that time, Jesus said to His disciples, When you hear of wars and insurrections, do not be terrified; these things must first come to pass, but the end will not be at once. Then He said to them, Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom; and there will be great earthquakes in various places, and pestilences and famines, and there will be terrors and great signs from heaven. But before all these things they will arrest you and persecute you, delivering you up to the synagogues and prisons, dragging you before kings and governors for My name’s sake. It shall lead to your bearing witness. Resolve therefore in your hearts not to meditate beforehand how you are to make your defense. For I Myself will give you utterance and wisdom, which all your adversaries will not be able to resist or gainsay. But you will be delivered up by your parents and brothers and relatives and friends; and some of you they will put to death. And you will be hated by all for My name’s sake; yet not a hair of your head shall perish. By your patience you will win your souls.

It is truly meet and just, and profitable unto salvation, that we should at all times, and in all places, give thanks to Thee, O Holy Lord, Father Almighty, eternal God, through Christ, our Lord. Through whom the Angels praise Thy Majesty, the Dominions adore it, the Powers are in awe. Which the heavens and the hosts of heaven together with the blessed Seraphim joyfully do magnify. And do Thou command that it be permitted us to join with them in confessing Thee, while we say with lowly praise:
