First ReadingAmos 8:4-6, 9-12

From the Book of Amos

4Hear this, you who desire to swallow up the needy, and cause the poor of the land to fail,5saying, ‘When will the new moon be gone, that we may sell grain? And the Sabbath, that we may market wheat, making the ephah small, and the shekel large, and dealing falsely with balances of deceit;6that we may buy the poor for silver, and the needy for a pair of sandals, and sell the sweepings with the wheat?’” verses 7–8 are not read9It will happen in that day,” says the Lord GOD,“that I will cause the sun to go down at noon, and I will darken the earth in the clear day.10I will turn your feasts into mourning, and all your songs into lamentation;and I will make you wear sackcloth on all your bodies, and baldness on every head.I will make it like the mourning for an only son,and its end like a bitter day.11Behold, the days come,” says the Lord GOD,“that I will send a famine in the land, not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water, but of hearing the Lord’s words.12They will wander from sea to sea,and from the north even to the east;they will run back and forth to seek the Lord’s word, and will not find it.

Responsorial PsalmPsalm 119:2 and 10, 20 and 30, 40 and 131*

2Blessed are those who keep his statutes, who seek him with their whole heart.10With my whole heart I have sought you.Don’t let me wander from your commandments.

20My soul is consumed with longing for your ordinances at all times.30I have chosen the way of truth.I have set your ordinances before me.

40Behold, I long for your precepts!Revive me in your righteousness.131I opened my mouth wide and panted, for I longed for your commandments.

GospelMatthew 9:9-13

From the Gospel according to Matthew

9As Jesus passed by from there,he saw a man called Matthew sitting at the tax collection office. He said to him, “Follow me.”He got up and followed him.10As he sat in the house, behold, many tax collectors and sinners cameand sat down with Jesus and his disciples.11When the Pharisees saw it,they said to his disciples,“Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?”

12When Jesus heard it,he said to them, “Thosewho are healthy have no need for a physician, but those who are sick do.13But you go and learn what this means:‘I desire mercy, and not sacrifice,’for I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.”

Protéctor in te sperántium, Deus, sine quo nihil est válidum, nihil sanctum: multíplica super nos misericórdiam tuam; ut, te rectóre, te duce, sic transeámus per bona temporália, ut non amittámus ætérna.

Per Dominum…

O God, protector of all who hope in You, without Whom nothing is strong, nothing is holy, increase Your mercy toward us, that, with Your guidance and direction we may so pass through the things of this temporal life as not to lose those of life eternal.

Léctio Epístolæ beáti Petri Apóstoli

1 Pet. 5:6-11

Caríssimi: Humiliámini sub poténti manu Dei, ut vos exáltet in témpore visitatiónis: omnem sollicitúdinem vestram projiciéntes in eum, quóniam ipsi cura est de vobis. Sóbrii estote et vigiláte: quia adversárius vester diábolus tamquam leo rúgiens circuit, quærens, quem dévoret: cui resístite fortes in fide: sciéntes eándem passiónem ei, quæ in mundo est, vestræ fraternitáti fíeri. Deus autem omnis grátiæ, qui vocávit nos in ætérnam suam glóriam in Christo Jesu, módicum passos ipse perfíciet, confirmábit solidabítque. Ipsi glória et impérium in sǽcula sæculórum. Amen.

Lesson from the first letter of St. Peter the Apostle

1 Pet. 5:6-11

Beloved: Humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you in the time of visitation; cast all your anxiety upon Him, because He cares for you. Be sober, be watchful! For your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, goes about seeking someone to devour. Resist him, steadfast in the faith, knowing that the same suffering befalls your brethren all over the world. But the God of all grace, Who has called us unto His eternal glory in Christ Jesus, will Himself, after we have suffered a little while, perfect, strengthen and establish us. To Him is the glory and the dominion forever and ever. Amen.

Ps. 7:12

GospelEvangelium

Sequéntia ☩ sancti Evangélii secúndum Lucam

Luc 15:1-10

Continuation ☩ of the Holy Gospel according to Luke

Luke 15:1-10

At that time, the publicans and sinners were drawing near to Him to listen to Him. And the Pharisees and the Scribes murmured, saying, This man welcomes sinners and eats with them. But He spoke to them this parable, saying, What man of you having a hundred sheep, and losing one of them, does not leave the ninety-nine in the desert, and go after that which is lost, until he finds it? And when he has found it, he lays it upon his shoulders rejoicing. And on coming home he calls together his friends and neighbors, saying to them, ‘Rejoice with me, because I have found my sheep that was lost.’ I say to you that, even so, there will be joy in heaven over one sinner who repents, more then over ninety-nine just who have no need of repentance. Or what woman, having ten drachmas, if she loses one drachma, does not light a lamp and sweep the house and search carefully until she finds it? And when she has found it, she calls together her friends and neighbors, saying, ‘Rejoice with me, for I have found the drachma that I had lost.’ Even so, I say to you, there will be joy among the angels of God over one sinner who repents.

It is truly meet and just, and profitable unto salvation, that we should at all times, and in all places, give thanks to Thee, O Holy Lord, Father Almighty, eternal God, through Christ, our Lord. And do Thou command that it be permitted us to join with them in confessing Thee, while we say with lowly praise:
