First ReadingActs 25:13b-21

From the Acts of the Apostles

13Now when some days had passed,King Agrippaand Bernice arrived at Caesarea and greeted Festus.14As he stayed there many days,Festus laid Paul’s case before the king, saying, “There is a certain man left a prisoner by Felix;15about whom, when I was at Jerusalem, the chief priests and the elders of the Jews informed me,asking for a sentence against him.16I answered themthat it is not the custom of the Romans to give up any man to destruction before the accused has met the accusers face to faceand has had opportunity to make his defense concerning the matter laid against him.17When therefore they had come together here,I didn’t delay, but on the next day sat on the judgment seatand commanded the man to be brought.18When the accusers stood up,they brought no charges against him of such things as I supposed;19but had certain questions against him about their own religionand about one Jesus, who was dead, whom Paul affirmed to be alive.20Being perplexed how to inquire concerning these things,I asked whether he was willing to go to Jerusalemand there be judged concerning these matters.21But when Paul had appealed to be kept for the decision of the emperor,I commanded him to be kept until I could send him to Caesar.”

Responsorial PsalmPsalm 103:1-2, 11-12, 19-20ab

1Praise the Lord, my soul! All that is within me, praise his holy name!2Praise the Lord, my soul, and don’t forget all his benefits,

11For as the heavens are high above the earth,so great is his loving kindness toward those who fear him.12As far as the east is from the west,so far has he removed our transgressions from us.

19The Lord has established his throne in the heavens. His kingdom rules over all.20Praise the Lord, you angels of his,who are mighty in strength, who fulfill his word, obeying the voice of his word.

GospelJohn 21:15-19

From the Gospel according to John

15So when they had eaten their breakfast,Jesus said to Simon Peter,“Simon, son of Jonah,do you love me more than these?”

He said to him, “Yes, Lord;you know that I have affection for you.”

He said to him, “Feed my lambs.”16He said to him again a second time,“Simon, son of Jonah, do you love me?”

He said to him, “Yes, Lord;you know that I have affection for you.”

He said to him, “Tend my sheep.”17He said to him the third time,“Simon, son of Jonah,do you have affection for me?”

Peter was grieved because he asked him the third time,“Do you have affection for me?”He said to him, “Lord, you know everything. You know that I have affection for you.”

Jesus said to him, “Feed my sheep.18Most certainly I tell you, when you were young, you dressed yourself and walked where you wanted to.But when you are old,you will stretch out your hands, and another will dress youand carry you where you don’t want to go.”

19Now he said this, signifying by what kind of death he would glorify God.When he had said this, he said to him, “Follow me.”

Léctio libri Sapiéntiæ

Sap 7:7-14

Lesson from the book of Wisdom

Wis 7:7-14.

I prayed, and prudence was given me; I pleaded, and the spirit of Wisdom came to me. I preferred her to scepter and throne, and deemed riches nothing in comparison with her. Nor did I liken any priceless gem to her; because all gold, in view of her, is a little sand, and before her, silver is to be accounted mire. Beyond health and comeliness I loved her, and I chose to have her rather than the light, because the splendor of her never yields to sleep. Yet all good things together came to me in her company, and countless riches at her hands; and I rejoiced in them all, because Wisdom is their leader, though I had not known that she is the mother of these. Simply I learned about her, and ungrudgingly do I share - her riches I do not hide away; for to men she is an unfailing treasure; those who gain this treasure win the friendship of God, to Whom the gifts they have from discipline commend them.

GospelEvangelium

Sequéntia ☩ sancti Evangélii secúndum Matthǽum

Matt 5:13-19

In illo témpore: Dixit Jesus discípulis suis: Vos estis sal terræ.

Continuation ☩ of the Holy Gospel according to Matthew

Matt 5:13-19

In that time Jesus said to His disciples: You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt lose its savour, wherewith shall it be salted? It is good for nothing any more but to be cast out, and to be trodden on by men. You are the light of the world. A city seated on a mountain cannot be hid. Neither do men light a candle and put it under a bushel, but upon a candlestick, that it may shine to all that are in the house. So let your light shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven. Do not think that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets. I am not come to destroy, but to fulfill. For amen I say unto you, till heaven and earth pass, one jot, or one tittle shall not pass of the law, till all be fulfilled. He therefore that shall break one of these least commandments, and shall so teach men, shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven. But he that shall do and teach, he shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.

Ascension

It is truly meet and just, right and for our salvation, that we should at all times, and in all places, give thanks unto Thee, O holy Lord, Father almighty, everlasting God: through Christ our Lord. Who, after His Resurrection, appeared openly to all His disciples, and, while they looked on, was taken up into heaven, that He might grant unto us to be sharers in His own divinity. And therefore, with Angels and Archangels, with Thrones and Dominations, and with all the hosts of the heavenly army, we sing the hymn of Thy glory, evermore saying:
