some verses are not read1Woe to the bloody city!It is all full of lies and robbery—no end to the prey.2The noise of the whip, the noise of the rattling of wheels, prancing horses, and bounding chariots,3the horseman charging, and the flashing sword, the glittering spear, and a multitude of slain, and a great heap of corpses, and there is no end of the bodies. They stumble on their bodies verses 4–5 are not read6I will throw abominable filth on you and make you vile, and will make you a spectacle.7It will happen that all thosewho look at you will flee from you,and say, ‘Nineveh is laid waste!Who will mourn for her?’Where will I seek comforters for you?”

From the Book of Deuteronomy

39“See now that I myself am he.There is no god with me.I kill and I make alive.I wound and I heal. There is no one who can deliver out of my hand.

41if I sharpen my glittering sword,my hand grasps it in judgment;I will take vengeance on my adversaries, and will repay those who hate me.

GospelMatthew 16:24-28

From the Gospel according to Matthew

24Then Jesus said to his disciples,“If anyone desires to come after me,let him deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me.25For whoever desires to save his life will lose it,and whoever will lose his life for my sake will find it.26For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole worldand forfeits his life?Or what will a man give in exchange for his life?27For the Son of Man will come in the glory of his Father with his angels, and then he will give to everyone according to his deeds.28Most certainly I tell you, there are some standing herewho will in no way taste of death until they see the Son of Man coming in his Kingdom.”

Eccli 31:8-11

Lesson from the book of Ecclesiasticus

Sir 31:8-11

Happy the man found without fault, who turns not aside after gain, nor puts his trust in money nor in treasures! Who is he, that we may praise him? For he has done wonders in his life. He has been tested by gold and come off safe, and this remains his glory forever; he could have sinned but did not, could have done evil but would not, so that his possessions are secure in the Lord, and the assembly of the Saints shall recount his alms.

Ps 91:13; 91:14

Ps 91:3

Ja 1:12

Ps 91:13; 91:14

The just man shall flourish like the palm tree, like a cedar of Lebanon shall he grow in the house of the Lord.

Ps 91:3

℣.To proclaim Your kindness at dawn and Your faithfulness throughout the night. Alleluia, alleluia.

GospelEvangelium

Sequéntia ☩ sancti Evangélii secúndum Matthǽum

Matt 6:24-33

Scit enim Pater vester, quia his ómnibus indigétis. Quǽrite ergo primum regnum Dei et justítiam ejus: et hæc ómnia adjiciéntur vobis.

Continuation ☩ of the Holy Gospel according to Matthew

Matt 6:24-33

At that time, Jesus said to His disciples: No man serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or else he will stand by the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon. Therefore I say to you, do not be anxious for your life, what you shall eat; nor yet for your body, what you shall put on. Is not the life a greater thing than the food, and the body than the clothing? Look at the birds of the air: they do not sow, or reap, or gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are not you of much more value than they? But which of you by being anxious about it can add to his stature a single cubit? And as for clothing, why are you anxious? Consider how the lilies of the field grow; they neither toil nor spin, yet I say to you that not even Solomon in all his glory was arrayed like one of those. But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which flourishes today but tomorrow is thrown into the oven, how much more you, O you of little faith! Therefore do not be anxious, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or, ‘What shall we drink?’ or, ‘What are we to put on?’ - for after all these things the Gentiles seek; - for your Father knows that you need all these things. But seek first the Kingdom of God and His justice, and all these things shall be given you besides.

And do Thou command that it be permitted us to join with them in confessing Thee, while we say with lowly praise:
