First Reading1 Kings 11:4-13

From the First Book of Kings

4When Solomon was old,his wives turned away his heart after other gods;and his heart was not perfect with the Lord his God,as the heart of David his father was.5For Solomon went after Ashtoreth the goddess of the Sidonians, and after Milcom the abomination of the Ammonites.6Solomon did that which was evil in the Lord’s sight, and didn’t go fully after the Lord,as David his father did.7Then Solomon built a high place for Chemosh the abomination of Moab,on the mountain that is before Jerusalem, and for Molech the abomination of the children of Ammon.8So he did for all his foreign wives, who burned incense and sacrificed to their gods.9The Lord was angry with Solomon, because his heart was turned away from the Lord, the God of Israel, who had appeared to him twice,10and had commanded him concerning this thing, that he should not go after other gods;but he didn’t keep that which the Lord commanded.11Therefore the Lord said to Solomon,“Because this is done by you,and you have not kept my covenant and my statutes, which I have commanded you,I will surely tear the kingdom from you,and will give it to your servant.12Nevertheless, I will not do it in your days, for David your father’s sake;but I will tear it out of your son’s hand.13However, I will not tear away all the kingdom;but I will give one tribe to your son,for David my servant’s sake, and for Jerusalem’s sake which I have chosen.”

Responsorial PsalmPsalm 106:3-4, 35-36, 37 and 40

3Blessed are those who keep justice.Blessed is one who does what is right at all times.4Remember me, Lord, with the favor that you show to your people.Visit me with your salvation,

35but mixed themselves with the nations, and learned their works.36They served their idols, which became a snare to them.

37Yes, they sacrificed their sons and their daughters to demons.40Therefore the Lord burned with anger against his people. He abhorred his inheritance.

GospelMark 7:24-30

From the Gospel according to Mark

24From there he aroseand went away into the borders of Tyre and Sidon. He entered into a house and didn’t want anyone to know it,but he couldn’t escape notice.25For a woman whose little daughter had an unclean spirit, having heard of him, came and fell down at his feet.26Now the woman was a Greek, a Syrophoenician by race. She begged himthat he would cast the demon out of her daughter.27But Jesus said to her,“Let the children be filled first, for it is not appropriate to take the children’s breadand throw it to the dogs.”

28But she answered him, “Yes, Lord.Yet even the dogs under the table eat the children’s crumbs.”

29He said to her, “For this saying, go your way.The demon has gone out of your daughter.”

30She went away to her house, and found the child having been laid on the bed, with the demon gone out.

Eccli 31:8-11

Lesson from the book of Ecclesiasticus

Sir 31:8-11

Happy the man found without fault, who turns not aside after gain, nor puts his trust in money nor in treasures! Who is he, that we may praise him? For he has done wonders in his life. He has been tested by gold and come off safe, and this remains his glory forever; he could have sinned but did not, could have done evil but would not, so that his possessions are secure in the Lord, and the assembly of the Saints shall recount his alms.

GospelEvangelium

Sequéntia ☩ sancti Evangélii secúndum Lucam

Luc 12:35-40

Continuation ☩ of the Holy Gospel according to Luke

Luke 12:35-40

At that time, Jesus said to His disciples, Let your loins be girt about and your lamps burning, and you yourselves like men waiting for their master’s return from the wedding; so that when he comes and knocks, they may straight-way open to him. Blessed are those servants whom the master, on his return, shall find watching. Amen I say to you, he will gird himself, and will make them recline at table, and will come and serve them. And if he comes in the second watch, and if in the third, and finds them so, blessed are those servants! But of this be assured, that if the householder had known at what hour the thief was coming, he would certainly have watched, and not have let his house be broken into. You also must be ready, because at an hour that you do not expect, the Son of Man is coming.
