First ReadingWisdom 7:7-11

From the Book of Wisdom

7For this cause I prayed, and understanding was given to me.I asked, and a spirit of wisdom came to me.8I preferred her before sceptres and thrones.I considered riches nothing in comparison to her.9Neither did I liken to her any priceless gem, because all gold in her presence is a little sand, and silver will be considered as clay before her.10I loved her more than health and beauty, and I chose to have her rather than light, because her bright shining is never laid to sleep.11All good things came to me with her,and innumerable riches are in her hands.

Responsorial PsalmPsalm 90:12-13, 14-15, 16-17

12So teach us to count our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.13Relent, Lord! How long?Have compassion on your servants!

14Satisfy us in the morning with your loving kindness, that we may rejoice and be glad all our days.15Make us glad for as many days as you have afflicted us,for as many years as we have seen evil.

16Let your work appear to your servants, your glory to their children.17Let the favor of the Lord our God be on us.Establish the work of our hands for us.Yes, establish the work of our hands.

Second ReadingHebrews 4:12-13

From the Letter to the Hebrews

12For the word of God is living and active, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing of soul and spirit,of both joints and marrow, and is able to discern the thoughtsand intentions of the heart.13There is no creature that is hidden from his sight, but all things are nakedand laid open before the eyes of him towhom we must give an account.

GospelMark 10:17-30

From the Gospel according to Mark

or Mark 10:17-27

17As he was going out into the way,one ran to him, knelt before him,and asked him, “Good Teacher, what shall I do that I may inherit eternal life?”

18Jesus said to him, “Why do you call me good?No one is good except one— God.19You know the commandments:‘Do not murder,’ ‘Do not commit adultery,’‘Do not steal,’ ‘Do not give false testimony,’‘Do not defraud,’ ‘Honor your father and mother.’”

20He said to him, “Teacher,I have observed all these things from my youth.”

21Jesus looking at him loved him,and said to him, “One thing you lack.Go, sell whatever you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven;and come, follow me, taking up the cross.”

22But his face fell at that saying, and he went away sorrowful, for he was one who had great possessions.

23Jesus looked around and said to his disciples,“How difficult it is for thosewho have riches to enter into God’s Kingdom!”

24The disciples were amazed at his words. But Jesus answered again,“Children, how hard it is for thosewho trust in riches to enter into God’s Kingdom!25It is easier for a camel to go through a needle’s eye than for a rich man to enter into God’s Kingdom.”

26They were exceedingly astonished, saying to him, “Then who can be saved?”

27Jesus, looking at them, said, “With men it is impossible, but not with God, for all things are possible with God.”

28Peter began to tell him,“Behold, we have left all and have followed you.”

29Jesus said, “Most certainly I tell you, there is no one who has left house,or brothers, or sisters,or father, or mother,or wife, or children,or land, for my sake, and for the sake of the Good News,30but he will receive one hundred times more now in this time:houses, brothers, sisters, mothers, children, and land, with persecutions;and in the age to come eternal life.

Ephes 6:10-17

Lesson from the letter of St. Paul the Apostle to the Ephesians

Eph 6:10-17

Brethren: Be strengthened in the Lord and in the might of His power. Put on the armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For our wrestling is not against flesh and blood, but against the Principalities and the Powers, against the world rulers of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness on high. Therefore, take up the armor of God, that you may be able to resist in the evil day, and stand in all things perfect. Stand, therefore, having girded your loins with truth, and having put on the breast-plate of justice, and having your feet shod with the readiness of the Gospel of peace, in all things taking up the shield of faith, with which you may be able to quench all the fiery darts of the most wicked one. And take unto you the helmet of salvation and the sword of the spirit, that is, the word of God.

Sequéntia ☩ sancti Evangélii secúndum Matthǽum

Matt 18:23-35

Continuation ☩ of the Holy Gospel according to Matthew

Matt 18:23-35

At that time, Jesus spoke to His disciples this parable: The kingdom of heaven is likened to a king who desired to settle accounts with his servants. And when he had begun the settlement, one was brought to him who owed him ten thousand talents. And as he had no means of paying, his master ordered him to be sold, with his wife and children and all that he had, and payment to be made. But the servant fell down and besought him, saying, ‘Have patience with me and I will pay you all!’ And moved with compassion, the master of that servant released him, and forgave him the debt. But as that servant went out, he met one of his fellow-servants who owed him a hundred denarii and he laid hold of him, and throttled him, saying, ‘Pay what you owe.’ His fellow-servant therefore fell down and began to entreat him, saying, ‘Have patience with me and I will pay you all.’ But he would not; but went away and cast him into prison until he should pay what was due. His fellow-servants therefore, seeing what had happened, were very much saddened, and they went and informed their master of what had taken place. Then his master called him, and said to him, ‘Wicked servant! I forgave you all the debt, because you entreated me. Should not you also have had pity on your fellow-servant, even as I had pity on you?’ And his master, being angry, handed him over to the torturers until he should pay all that was due to him. So also My heavenly Father will do to you, if you do not each forgive your brothers from your hearts.

Job 1.1

Job 1.1

There was a man in the land of Hus, whose name was Job, simple, and upright, and fearing God, whom Satan besought that he might tempt: and power was given him from the Lord over his possessions and his flesh; and he destroyed all his substance and his children, and wounded his flesh also with a grievous ulcer.

PrefacePrefatio

Holy Trinity

It is truly meet and just, right and for our salvation, that we should at all times, and in all places, give thanks unto Thee, O holy Lord, Father almighty, everlasting God; Who, together with Thine only-begotten Son, and the Holy Ghost, art one God, one Lord: not in the oneness of a single Person, but in the Trinity of one substance. For what we believe by Thy revelation of Thy glory, the same do we believe of Thy Son, the same of the Holy Ghost, without difference or separation. So that in confessing the true and everlasting Godhead, distinction in persons, unity in essence, and equality in majesty may be adored. Which the Angels and Archangels, the Cherubim also and Seraphim do praise: who cease not daily to cry out, with one voice saying:

Ps 118:81; 118:84; 118:86

My soul pines for Your salvation; I hope in Your word. When will You do judgment on my persecutors? The wicked persecuted me wrongfully; help me, O Lord my God!
