First ReadingNehemiah 2:1-8

From the Book of Nehemiah

1In the month Nisan,in the twentieth year of Artaxerxes the king, when wine was before him,I picked up the wine, and gave it to the king. Now I had not been sad before in his presence.2The king said to me,“Why is your face sad, since you are not sick? This is nothing else but sorrow of heart.”

Then I was very much afraid.3I said to the king, “Let the king live forever! Why shouldn’t my face be sad, when the city, the place of my fathers’ tombs, lies waste, and its gates have been consumed with fire?”

4Then the king said to me, “What is your request?”

So I prayed to the God of heaven.5I said to the king,“If it pleases the king, and if your servant has found favor in your sight,I ask that you would send me to Judah,to the city of my fathers’ tombs, that I may build it.”

6The king said to me (the queen was also sitting by him),“How long will your journey be?When will you return?”

So it pleased the king to send me,and I set a time for him.7Moreover I said to the king,“If it pleases the king, let letters be given me to the governors beyond the River, that they may let me pass through until I come to Judah;8and a letter to Asaph the keeper of the king’s forest, that he may give me timber to make beams for the gates of the citadel by the temple, for the wall of the city, and for the house that I will occupy.”

The king granted my requests, because of the good hand of my God on me.

Responsorial PsalmPsalm 137:1-2, 3, 4-5, 6

1By the rivers of Babylon, there we sat down.Yes, we wept, when we remembered Zion.2On the willows in that land,we hung up our harps.

3For there, those who led us captive asked us for songs. Those who tormented us demanded songs of joy:“Sing us one of the songs of Zion!”

4How can we sing the Lord’s song in a foreign land?5If I forget you, Jerusalem, let my right hand forget its skill.

6Let my tongue stick to the roof of my mouth if I don’t remember you,if I don’t prefer Jerusalem above my chief joy.

GospelLuke 9:57-62

From the Gospel according to Luke

57As they went on the way,a certain man said to him,“I want to follow you wherever you go, Lord.”

58Jesus said to him,“The foxes have holes and the birds of the sky have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay his head.”

59He said to another, “Follow me!”

But he said, “Lord, allow me first to go and bury my father.”

60But Jesus said to him,“Leave the dead to bury their own dead, but you go and announce God’s Kingdom.”

61Another also said,“I want to follow you,Lord, but first allow me to say good-bye to thosewho are at my house.”

62But Jesus said to him,“No one, having put his hand to the plow and looking back,is fit for God’s Kingdom.”

Léctio Epístolæ beáti Pauli Apóstoli ad Ephésios

Ephes 3:13-21

Lesson from the letter of St. Paul the Apostle to the Ephesians

Eph 3:13-21

Brethren: I pray you not to be disheartened at my tribulations for you, for they are your glory. For this reason I bend my knees to the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, from Whom all fatherhood in heaven and on earth receives its name, that He may grant you from His glorious riches to be strengthened with power through His Spirit unto the progress of the inner man; and to have Christ dwelling through faith in your hearts: so that, being rooted and grounded in love, you may be able to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and to know Christ’s love which surpasses knowledge, in order that you may be filled unto all the fullness of God. Now, to Him Who is able to accomplish all things in a measure far beyond what we ask or conceive, in keeping with the power that is at work in us - to Him be glory in the Church and in Christ Jesus down through all the ages of time without end. Amen.

GospelEvangelium

Sequéntia ☩ sancti Evangélii secúndum Lucam.

Luc 14:1-11

At illi tacuérunt.

Continuation ☩ of the Holy Gospel according to Luke

Luke 14:1-11

At that time, when Jesus entered the house of one of the rulers of the Pharisees on the Sabbath to take food, they watched Him. And behold, there was a certain man before Him who had the dropsy. And Jesus asked the lawyers and Pharisees, saying, Is it lawful to cure on the Sabbath? But they remained silent. And He took and healed him and let him go. Then addressing them, He said, Which of you shall have an ass or an ox fall into a pit, and will not immediately draw him up on the Sabbath? And they could give Him no answer to these things. But He also spoke a parable to those invited, observing how they were choosing the first places at table, and He said to them, When you are invited to a wedding feast, do not recline in the first place, lest perhaps one more distinguished than you have been invited by him, and he who invited you and him come and say to you, ‘Make room for this man’; and then you begin with shame to take the last place. But when you are invited go and recline in the last place; that when he who invited you comes in, he may say to you, ‘Friend, go up higher!’ Then you will be honored in the presence of all who are at table with you. For everyone who exalts himself shall be humbled, and he who humbles himself shall be exalted.

Common

It is truly meet and just, and profitable unto salvation, that we should at all times, and in all places, give thanks to Thee, O Holy Lord, Father Almighty, eternal God, through Christ, our Lord. Through whom the Angels praise Thy Majesty, the Dominions adore it, the Powers are in awe. Which the heavens and the hosts of heaven together with the blessed Seraphim joyfully do magnify. And do Thou command that it be permitted us to join with them in confessing Thee, while we say with lowly praise:
