First Reading2 Samuel 11:1-4a, 5-10a, 13-17

From the Second Book of Samuel

1At the return of the year,at the time when kings go out,David sent Joab and his servants with him, and all Israel;and they destroyed the children of Ammonand besieged Rabbah. But David stayed at Jerusalem.2At evening, David arose from his bedand walked on the roof of the king’s house. From the roof, he saw a woman bathing, and the woman was very beautiful to look at.3David sent and inquired after the woman. One said, “Isn’t this Bathsheba, the daughter of Eliam,Uriah the Hittite’s wife?”

4David sent messengers, and took her;and she came in to him,and he lay with her (for she was purified from her uncleanness);and she returned to her house.5The woman conceived;and she sent and told David, and said, “I am with child.”

6David sent to Joab, “Send me Uriah the Hittite.”Joab sent Uriah to David.7When Uriah had come to him,David asked him how Joab did,and how the people fared, and how the war prospered.8David said to Uriah,“Go down to your house and wash your feet.”Uriah departed out of the king’s house, and a gift from the king was sent after him.9But Uriah slept at the door of the king’s house with all the servants of his lord, and didn’t go down to his house.10When they had told David, saying, “Uriah didn’t go down to his house,”David said to Uriah,“Haven’t you come from a journey? Why didn’t you go down to your house?” verses 11–12 are not read13When David had called him, he ate and drank before him;and he made him drunk. At evening, he went out to lie on his bed with the servants of his lord, but didn’t go down to his house.14In the morning, David wrote a letter to Joaband sent it by the hand of Uriah.15He wrote in the letter, saying, “Send Uriah to the forefront of the hottest battle, and retreat from him, that he may be struck and die.”

16When Joab kept watch on the city,he assigned Uriah to the place where he knewthat valiant men were.17The men of the city went out and fought with Joab. Some of the people fell, even of David’s servants;and Uriah the Hittite died also.

Responsorial PsalmPsalm 51:3-4, 5-6a, 6bcd-7, 10-11

3Have mercy on me, God, according to your loving kindness.According to the multitude of your tender mercies, blot out my transgressions.4Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity.Cleanse me from my sin.

5For I know my transgressions. My sin is constantly before me.6Against you, and you only, I have sinned,

6and done that which is evil in your sight,so you may be proved right when you speak, and justified when you judge.7Behold, I was born in iniquity. My mother conceived me in sin.

10Let me hear joy and gladness, that the bones which you have broken may rejoice.11Hide your face from my sins, and blot out all of my iniquities.

GospelMark 4:26-34

From the Gospel according to Mark

26He said, “God’s Kingdom is as if a man should cast seed on the earth,27and should sleep and rise night and day,and the seed should spring up and grow, though he doesn’t know how.28For the earth bears fruit by itself:first the blade, then the ear, then the full grain in the ear.29But when the fruit is ripe, immediately he puts in the sickle, because the harvest has come.”

30He said, “How will we liken God’s Kingdom?Or with what parable will we illustrate it?31It’s like a grain of mustard seed, which, when it is sown in the earth, though it is less than all the seedsthat are on the earth,32yet when it is sown, grows up and becomes greater than all the herbs, and puts out great branches,so that the birds of the sky can lodge under its shadow.”

33With many such parables he spoke the word to them,as they were able to hear it.34Without a parable he didn’t speak to them;but privately to his own disciples he explained everything.

EpistleLectio

Léctio Epistolæ beáti Pauli Apóstoli ad Romános

Rom 8:35-39

Fratres: Quis nos separábit a caritáte Christi: tribulátio, an angustia, an fames, an núditas, an perículum, an persecútio, an gládius? sicut scriptum est: Quia propter te mortificámur tota die: æstimáti sumus sicut oves occisiónis.

Lesson from the letter of St. Paul the Apostle to the Romans

Rom 8:35-39

Brethren, who shall separate us from the love of Christ? shall tribulation? or distress? or famine? Or nakedness? or danger? Or persecution? or the sword? As it is written: For Thy sake we are put to death all the day long: we are accounted as sheep for the slaughter. But in all these things we overcome because of Him that hath loved us. For I am sure that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor might, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Sequéntia ☩ sancti Evangélii secúndum Joánnem

Joann 12:24-26

Continuation ☩ of the Holy Gospel according to John

John 12:24-26

At that time, Jesus said to His Disciples, “Amen, amen, I say to you, unless the grain of wheat falls into the ground and dies, it remains alone. But if it dies, it brings forth much fruit. He who loves his life, loses it; and he who hates his life in this world, keeps it unto life everlasting. If anyone serves Me, let him follow Me; and where I am there also shall My servant be. If anyone serves Me, My Father will honor him.”

It is truly meet and just, and profitable unto salvation, that we should at all times, and in all places, give thanks to Thee, O Holy Lord, Father Almighty, eternal God, through Christ, our Lord. Through whom the Angels praise Thy Majesty, the Dominions adore it, the Powers are in awe. Which the heavens and the hosts of heaven together with the blessed Seraphim joyfully do magnify. And do Thou command that it be permitted us to join with them in confessing Thee, while we say with lowly praise:
