First ReadingActs 18:9-18

From the Acts of the Apostles

9The Lord said to Paul in the night by a vision,“Don’t be afraid, but speak and don’t be silent;10for I am with you,and no one will attack you to harm you,for I have many people in this city.”

11He lived there a year and six months, teaching the word of God among them.12But when Gallio was proconsul of Achaia, the Jews with one accord rose up against Pauland brought him before the judgment seat,13saying, “This man persuades men to worship God contrary to the law.”

14But when Paul was about to open his mouth,Gallio said to the Jews,“If indeed it were a matter of wrong or of wicked crime, you Jews, it would be reasonablethat I should bear with you;15but if they are questions about wordsand names and your own law, look to it yourselves. For I don’t want to be a judge of these matters.”16So he drove them from the judgment seat.

17Then all the Greeks seized Sosthenes, the ruler of the synagogue, and beat him before the judgment seat.Gallio didn’t care about any of these things.

18Paul, having stayed after this many more days, took his leave of the brothers, and sailed from there for Syria, together with Priscilla and Aquila. He shaved his head in Cenchreae, for he had a vow.

Responsorial PsalmPsalm 47:2-3, 4-5, 6-7

2Oh clap your hands, all you nations.Shout to God with the voice of triumph!3For the Lord Most High is awesome. He is a great King over all the earth.

4He subdues nations under us,and peoples under our feet.5He chooses our inheritance for us,the glory of Jacob whom he loved.

6God has gone up with a shout, the Lord with the sound of a trumpet.7Sing praises to God! Sing praises!Sing praises to our King! Sing praises!

GospelJohn 16:20-23

From the Gospel according to John

20Most certainly I tell you that you will weep and lament, but the world will rejoice. You will be sorrowful, but your sorrow will be turned into joy.21A woman, when she gives birth, has sorrow because her time has come. But when she has delivered the child, she doesn’t remember the anguish any more, for the joy that a human being is born into the world.22Therefore you now have sorrow, but I will see you again, and your heart will rejoice, and no one will take your joy away from you.

23“In that day you will ask me no questions. Most certainly I tell you, whatever you may ask of the Father in my name,he will give it to you.

EpistleLectio

Léctio Epístolæ beáti Pauli Apóstoli ad Timótheum

1 Tim 5:3-10

Lesson from the first letter of St Paul the Apostle to Timothy

1 Tim. 5:3-10.

Dearly beloved: Honor widows, that are widows indeed. But if any widow have children or grandchildren, let her learn first to govern her own house, and to make a return of duty to her parents: for this is acceptable before God. But she that is a widow indeed and desolate, let her trust in God, and continue in prayers and supplications night and day. For she that liveth in pleasures, is dead while she is living. And this give in charge, that they may be blameless. But if any man have not care of his own, and especially of those of his house, he hath denied the faith, and is worse than an infidel. Let a widow be chosen of no less than threescore years of age, who hath been the wife of one husband, having testimony for her good words, if she have brought up children, if she have received to harbor, if she have washed the saints’ feet, if she have ministered to them that suffer tribulation, if she have diligently followed every good work.

Sequéntia ☩ sancti Evangélii secúndum Lucam

Luc 7:11-16

Continuation of the Holy Gospel according to Luke

Luke 7:11-16

At that time, Jesus went into a city called Naim; and His disciples and a large crowd went with Him. And as He drew near the gate of the town, behold, a dead man was being carried out, the only son of his mother, and she was a widow; and a large gathering from the town was with her. And the Lord, seeing her, had compassion on her, and said to her, Do not weep. And He went up and touched the stretcher; and the bearers stood still. And He said, Young man, I say to you, arise. And he who was dead, sat up, and began to speak. And He gave him to his mother. But fear seized upon all, and they began to glorify God, saying, A great prophet has risen among us, and God has visited His people.

Ascension

It is truly meet and just, right and for our salvation, that we should at all times, and in all places, give thanks unto Thee, O holy Lord, Father almighty, everlasting God: through Christ our Lord. Who, after His Resurrection, appeared openly to all His disciples, and, while they looked on, was taken up into heaven, that He might grant unto us to be sharers in His own divinity. And therefore, with Angels and Archangels, with Thrones and Dominations, and with all the hosts of the heavenly army, we sing the hymn of Thy glory, evermore saying:
