First ReadingTobit 6:10-11; 7:1bcde, 9-17; 8:4-9a

From the Book of Tobit

10But when they drew near to Rages,11the angel said to the young man,“Brother, today we will lodge with Raguel.He is your kinsman.He has an only daughter named Sarah.I will speak about her,that she should be given to you for a wife.

some verses are not read1They came to Ecbatana, and arrived at the house of Raguel.But Sarah met them;and she greeted them, and they her.Then she brought them into the house. verses 2–8 are not read9and Edna his wife and Sarah his daughter wept.They received them gladly;and they killed a ram of the flock, and served them meat.

But Tobias said to Raphael,“Brother Azarias, speak of those things ofwhich you talked about in the way,and let the matter be finished.”

10So he communicated the thing to Raguel.Raguel said to Tobias, “Eat, drink, and make merry:for it belongs to you to take my child.However I will tell you the truth.11I have given my child to seven men of our relatives,and whenever they came in to her,they died in the night.But for the present be merry.”

And Tobias said, “I will taste nothing here,until you all make a covenantand enter into that covenant with me.”

Raguel said, “Take her to yourself from now on according to custom.You are her relative, and she is yours.The merciful God will give all good success to you.”12And he called his daughter Sarah,and took her by the hand,and gave her to be wife of Tobias,and said, “Behold,take her to yourself after the law of Moses,and lead her away to your father.”And he blessed them.13He called Edna his wife,then took a book, wrote a contract, and sealed it.14Then they began to eat.

15And Raguel called his wife Edna,and said to her, “Sister,prepare the other chamber,and bring her in there.”16She did as he asked her, and brought her in there.She wept, and she received the tears of her daughter, and said to her,17“Be comforted, my child.May the Lord of heavenand earth give you favor for this your sorrow.Be comforted, my daughter.” some verses are not read4But after they were both shut in together,Tobias rose up from the bed,and said, “Sister,arise, and let’s pray that the Lord may have mercy on us.”5And Tobias began to say,“Blessed are you, O God of our fathers,and blessed is your holy and glorious name forever.Let the heavens bless you, and all your creatures.6You made Adam,and gave him Eve his wife for a helper and support.From them came the seed of men.You said, it is not good that the man should be alone.Let’s make him a helper like him.7And now, O Lord, I take not this my sister for lust, but in truth.Command that I may find mercy and grow old with her.”

8She said with him, “Amen.”And they both slept that night.

Responsorial PsalmPsalm 128:1-2, 3, 4-5

1Blessed is everyone who fears the Lord,who walks in his ways.2For you will eat the labor of your hands.You will be happy, and it will be well with you.

3Your wife will be as a fruitful vine in the innermost parts of your house,your children like olive shoots around your table.

4Behold, this is how the man who fears the Lord is blessed.5May the Lord bless you out of Zion,and may you see the good of Jerusalem all the days of your life.

GospelMark 12:28-34

From the Gospel according to Mark

28One of the scribes cameand heard them questioning together,and knowing that he had answered them well,asked him, “Which commandment is the greatest of all?”

29Jesus answered, “The greatest is:‘Hear, Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one.30You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart,with all your soul,with all your mind,and with all your strength.’This is the first commandment.31The second is like this:‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’There is no other commandment greater than these.”

32The scribe said to him,“Truly, teacher, you have said well that he is one,and there is none other but he;33and to love him with all the heart,with all the understanding,all the soul, and with all the strength,and to love his neighbor as himself,is more important than all whole burnt offerings and sacrifices.”

34When Jesus saw that he answered wisely,he said to him, “You are not far from God’s Kingdom.”

No one dared ask him any question after that.

Léctio Actuum Apostolórum

Acts 8:5-8

In diébus illis: Philíppus descéndens in civitátem Samaríæ, prædicábat illis Christum. Intendébant autem turbæ his, quæ a Philíppo dicebántur, unanímiter audiéntes et vidéntes signa, quæ faciébat. Multi enim eórum, qui habébant spíritus immúndos, clamántes voce magna, exíbant. Multi autem paralýtici et claudi curáti sunt. Factum est ergo gáudium magnum in illa civitáte.

Lesson from the Acts of Apostles

Acts 8:5-8

In those days, Philip went down to the city of Samaria and preached the Christ to them. And the crowds with one accord gave heed to what was said by Philip, listening to him and seeing the miracles that he worked. For unclean spirits, crying with a loud voice, went out of many possessed persons, and many paralytics and cripples were cured. So there was great joy in that city.

Holy Spirit! Lord of light!

From Thy clear celestial height, Thy pure, beaming radiance give:

Come, Thou, Father of the poor!

Come, with treasures which endure!

Come, Thou light of all that live!

Thou of all consolers best,

Visiting the troubled breast,

Dost refreshing peace bestow:

Thou in toil art comfort sweet;

Pleasant coolness in the heat;

Solace in the midst of woe.

Light immortal! Light divine!

Visit Thou these hearts of Thine, And our inmost being fill.

If Thou take Thy grace away,

Nothing pure in man will stay;

All his good is turn’d to ill.

Heal our wounds - our strength renew;

On our dryness pour Thy dew;

Wash the stains of guilt away:

Bend the stubborn heart and will;

Melt the frozen, warm the chill;

Guide the steps that go astray.

Thou, on those who evermore

Thee confess and Thee adore,

In Thy sevenfold gifts descend.

Give them comfort when they die;

Give them life with Thee on high;

Give them joys which never end.

Amen. Alleluia.

Sequéntia ☩ sancti Evangélii secúndum Lucam

Luc 9:1-6

Continuation ☩ of the Holy Gospel according to Luke

Luke 9:1-6

At that time, having summoned the twelve apostles, Jesus gave them power and authority over all the devils, and to cure diseases. And He sent them forth to preach the kingdom of God, and to heal the sick. And he said to them, Take nothing for your journey, neither staff, nor wallet, nor bread, nor money; neither have two tunics. And whatever house you enter, stay there, and do not depart from thence. And whosoever will not receive you - go forth from that town, and shake off even the dust from your feet for a witness against them. And going forth, they went about from village to village, preaching the gospel and working cures everywhere.
