First Reading1 Corinthians 1:17-25

From the First Letter of Paul to the Corinthians

17For Christ sent me not to baptize, but to preach the Good News—not in wisdom of words,so that the cross of Christ wouldn’t be made void.18For the word of the cross is foolishness to those who are dying, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.19For it is written,

“I will destroy the wisdom of the wise.I will bring the discernment of the discerning to nothing.”

20Where is the wise?Where is the scribe?Where is the debater of this age?Hasn’t God made foolish the wisdom of this world?21For seeing that in the wisdom of God,the world through its wisdom didn’t know God,it was God’s good pleasure through the foolishness of the preaching to save those who believe.22For Jews ask for signs, Greeks seek after wisdom,23but we preach Christ crucified,a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Greeks,24but to those who are called, both Jews and Greeks,Christ is the power of God and the wisdom of God;25because the foolishness of God is wiser than men,and the weakness of God is stronger than men.

Responsorial PsalmPsalm 33:1-2, 4-5, 10-11

1Rejoice in the Lord, you righteous!Praise is fitting for the upright.2Give thanks to the Lord with the lyre.Sing praises to him with the harp of ten strings.

4For the Lord’s word is right. All his work is done in faithfulness.5He loves righteousness and justice. The earth is full of the loving kindness of the Lord.

10The Lord brings the counsel of the nations to nothing. He makes the thoughts of the peoples to be of no effect.11The counsel of the Lord stands fast forever, the thoughts of his heart to all generations.

GospelMatthew 25:1-13

From the Gospel according to Matthew

1“Then the Kingdom of Heaven will be like ten virginswho took their lamps and went out to meet the bridegroom.2Five of them were foolish, and five were wise.3Those who were foolish, when they took their lamps, took no oil with them,4but the wise took oil in their vessels with their lamps.5Now while the bridegroom delayed, they all slumbered and slept.6But at midnight there was a cry, ‘Behold! The bridegroom is coming!Come out to meet him!’7Then all those virgins arose, and trimmed their lamps.8The foolish said to the wise,‘Give us some of your oil,for our lamps are going out.’9But the wise answered, saying, ‘What if there isn’t enough for us and you?You go rather to those who sell, and buy for yourselves.’10While they went away to buy,the bridegroom came, and those who were ready went in with him to the wedding feast, and the door was shut.11Afterward the other virgins also came, saying, ‘Lord, Lord, open to us.’12But he answered, ‘Most certainly I tell you,I don’t know you.’13Watch therefore, for you don’t know the day nor the hour inwhich the Son of Man is coming.

Eccli 31:8-11

Lesson from the book of Ecclesiasticus

Sir 31:8-11

Happy the man found without fault, who turns not aside after gain, nor puts his trust in money nor in treasures! Who is he, that we may praise him? For he has done wonders in his life. He has been tested by gold and come off safe, and this remains his glory forever; he could have sinned but did not, could have done evil but would not, so that his possessions are secure in the Lord, and the assembly of the Saints shall recount his alms.

Sequéntia ☩ sancti Evangélii secúndum Lucam

Luc 12:35-40

Continuation ☩ of the Holy Gospel according to Luke

Luke 12:35-40

At that time, Jesus said to His disciples, Let your loins be girt about and your lamps burning, and you yourselves like men waiting for their master’s return from the wedding; so that when he comes and knocks, they may straight-way open to him. Blessed are those servants whom the master, on his return, shall find watching. Amen I say to you, he will gird himself, and will make them recline at table, and will come and serve them. And if he comes in the second watch, and if in the third, and finds them so, blessed are those servants! But of this be assured, that if the householder had known at what hour the thief was coming, he would certainly have watched, and not have let his house be broken into. You also must be ready, because at an hour that you do not expect, the Son of Man is coming.
