Optional memorial: Saint Isidore, Bishop and Doctor of the Church

First ReadingExodus 32:7-14

From the Book of Exodus

7The Lord spoke to Moses, “Go, get down;for your people, whom you brought up out of the land of Egypt, have corrupted themselves!8They have turned away quickly out of the waywhich I commanded them. They have made themselves a molded calf, and have worshiped it,and have sacrificed to it,and said, ‘These are your gods,Israel, which brought you up out of the land of Egypt.’”

9The Lord said to Moses,“I have seen these people, and behold, they are a stiff-necked people.10Now therefore leave me alone, that my wrath may burn hot against them, and that I may consume them;and I will make of you a great nation.”

11Moses begged the Lord his God,and said, “Lord, why does your wrath burn hot against your people, that you have brought out of the land of Egypt with great powerand with a mighty hand?12Why should the Egyptians talk, saying, ‘He brought them out for evil,to kill them in the mountains, and to consume them from the surface of the earth’?Turn from your fierce wrath, and turn away from this evil against your people.13Remember Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, your servants,to whom you swore by your own self, and said to them, ‘I will multiply your offspring as the stars of the sky,and all this landthat I have spoken of I will give to your offspring, and they shall inherit it forever.’”

14So the Lord turned away from the evilwhich he said he would do to his people.

Responsorial PsalmPsalm 106:19-20, 21-22, 23

19They made a calf in Horeb, and worshiped a molten image.20Thus they exchanged their gloryfor an image of a bull that eats grass.

21They forgot God, their Savior, who had done great things in Egypt,22wondrous works in the land of Ham,and awesome things by the Red Sea.

23Therefore he said that he would destroy them, had Moses, his chosen, not stood before him in the breach,to turn away his wrath, so that he wouldn’t destroy them.

GospelJohn 5:31-47

From the Gospel according to John

31“If I testify about myself, my witness is not valid.32It is another who testifies about me.I know that the testimonywhich he testifies about me is true.33You have sent to John, and he has testified to the truth.34But the testimony which I receive is not from man. However, I say these things that you may be saved.35He was the burning and shining lamp, and you were willing to rejoice for a while in his light.36But the testimonywhich I have is greater than that of John;for the works which the Father gave me to accomplish, the very works that I do,testify about me, that the Father has sent me.37The Father himself, who sent me, has testified about me.You have neither heard his voice at any time, nor seen his form.38You don’t have his word living in you, because you don’t believe him whom he sent.

39“You search the Scriptures, because you think that in them you have eternal life;and these are they which testify about me.40Yet you will not come to me, that you may have life.41I don’t receive glory from men.42But I know you, that you don’t have God’s love in yourselves.43I have come in my Father’s name, and you don’t receive me.If another comes in his own name, you will receive him.44How can you believe, who receive glory from one another, and you don’t seek the glory that comes from the only God?

45“Don’t think that I will accuse you to the Father. There is one who accuses you, even Moses, on whom you have set your hope.46For if you believed Moses, you would believe me;for he wrote about me.47But if you don’t believe his writings, how will you believe my words?”

Léctio libri Regum

4 Reg 4:25-38

In diébus illis: Venit múlier Sunamítis ad Eliséum in montem Carméli: cumque vidísset eam vir Dei e contra, ait ad Giézi púerum suum: Ecce Sunamítis illa. Quæ dixit illi: Numquid petívi fílium a dómino meo? Numquid non dixi tibi: Ne illúdas me?

Lesson from the book of Kings

4 Kings 4:25-38

In those days, a Sunamite woman came to Eliseus to Mount Carmel: and when the man of God saw her coming toward him, he said to Giezi his servant, Behold that Sunamitess. Go therefore to meet her, and say to her: Is it well with you, and with your husband, and with your son? And she answered, Well. And when she came to the man of God to the mount, she caught hold on his feet: and Giezi came to remove her. And the man of God said, Let her alone: for her soul is in anguish, and the Lord has hid it from me and has not told me. And she said to him, Did I ask a son of my lord? Did I not say to you: Do not deceive me? Then he said to Giezi, Gird up your loins, and take my staff in your hand and go. If any man meet you, salute him not: and if any man salute you, answer him not: and lay my staff upon the face of the child. But the mother of the child said, As the Lord lives, and as your soul lives, I will not leave you. He arose therefore, and followed her. But Giezi was gone before them, and laid the staff upon the face of the child, and there was not voice nor sense: and he returned to meet him, and told him, saying, The child is not risen. Eliseus therefore went into the house, and behold, the child lay dead on his bed: and going in he shut the door upon him, and upon the child: and prayed to the Lord. And he went up and lay upon the child: and he put his mouth upon his mouth, and his eyes upon his eyes, and his hands upon his hands, and he bowed himself upon him: and the child’s flesh grew warm. Then he returned, and walked in the house, once to and fro: and he went up and lay upon him: and the child gaped seven times, and opened his eyes. And he called Giezi, and said to him, Call this Sunamitess. And she being called, went in to him. And he said, Take up your son. She came and fell at his feet, and worshipped upon the ground: and took up her son, and went out, and Eliseus returned to Galgal.

Sequéntia ☩ sancti Evangélii secúndum Lucam

Luc 7:11-16

Continuation of the Holy Gospel according to Luke

Luke 7:11-16

At that time, Jesus went into a city called Naim; and His disciples and a large crowd went with Him. And as He drew near the gate of the town, behold, a dead man was being carried out, the only son of his mother, and she was a widow; and a large gathering from the town was with her. And the Lord, seeing her, had compassion on her, and said to her, Do not weep. And He went up and touched the stretcher; and the bearers stood still. And He said, Young man, I say to you, arise. And he who was dead, sat up, and began to speak. And He gave him to his mother. But fear seized upon all, and they began to glorify God, saying, A great prophet has risen among us, and God has visited His people.

Lent

It is truly meet and just, right and for our salvation, that we should at all times, and in all places, give thanks unto Thee, O holy Lord, Father almighty, everlasting God; Who by this bodily fast, dost curb our vices, dost lift up our minds and bestow on us strength and rewards; through Christ our Lord. Through whom the Angels praise Thy Majesty, the Dominations worship it, the Powers stand in awe. The Heavens and the heavenly hosts together with the blessed Seraphim in triumphant chorus unite to celebrate it. Together with these we entreat Thee that Thou mayest bid our voices also to be admitted while we say with lowly praise:
