First ReadingJeremiah 28:1-17

From the Book of Jeremiah

1That same year, in the beginning of the reign of Zedekiah king of Judah,in the fourth year,in the fifth month,Hananiah the son of Azzur, the prophet, who was of Gibeon, spoke to me in the Lord’s house,in the presence of the priestsand of all the people, saying,2“The Lord of Armies, the God of Israel, says, ‘I have broken the yoke of the king of Babylon.3Within two full years I will bring again into this place all the vessels of the Lord’s housethat Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon took away from this placeand carried to Babylon.4I will bring again to this place Jeconiah the son of Jehoiakim, king of Judah, with all the captives of Judah, who went to Babylon,’ says the Lord;‘for I will break the yoke of the king of Babylon.’”

5Then the prophet Jeremiah said to the prophet Hananiah in the presence of the priests, and in the presence of all the peoplewho stood in the Lord’s house,6even the prophet Jeremiah said, “Amen!May the Lord do so.May the Lord perform your words which you have prophesied,to bring again the vessels of the Lord’s house, and all those who are captives, from Babylon to this place.7Nevertheless listen now to this wordthat I speak in your ears, and in the ears of all the people:8The prophets who have been before meand before you of old prophesied against many countries, and against great kingdoms,of war, of evil, and of pestilence.9As for the prophet who prophesies of peace, when the word of the prophet happens, then the prophet will be known, that the Lord has truly sent him.”

10Then Hananiah the prophet took the bar from off the prophet Jeremiah’s neck, and broke it.11Hananiah spoke in the presence of all the people, saying, “The Lord says:‘Even so I will break the yoke of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon from off the neck of all the nations within two full years.’”Then the prophet Jeremiah went his way.

12Then the Lord’s word came to Jeremiah, after Hananiah the prophet had broken the bar from off the neck of the prophet Jeremiah, saying,13“Go, and tell Hananiah, saying, ‘The Lord says,“You have broken the bars of wood, but you have made in their place bars of iron.”14For the Lord of Armies, the God of Israel says,“I have put a yoke of iron on the neck of all these nations, that they may serve Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon;and they will serve him.I have also given him the animals of the field.”’”

15Then the prophet Jeremiah said to Hananiah the prophet,“Listen, Hananiah! The Lord has not sent you,but you make this people trust in a lie.16Therefore the Lord says,‘Behold, I will send you away from off the surface of the earth. This year you will die, because you have spoken rebellion against the Lord.’”

17So Hananiah the prophet died the same year in the seventh month.

Responsorial PsalmPsalm 119:29, 43, 79, 80, 95, 102

29Keep me from the way of deceit.Grant me your law graciously!

43Don’t snatch the word of truth out of my mouth, for I put my hope in your ordinances.

79Let those who fear you turn to me.They will know your statutes.

80Let my heart be blameless toward your decrees, that I may not be disappointed.

95The wicked have waited for me, to destroy me.I will consider your statutes.

102I have not turned away from your ordinances, for you have taught me.

GospelMatthew 14:22-36

From the Gospel according to Matthew

22Immediately Jesus made the disciples get into the boatand go ahead of him to the other side, while he sent the multitudes away.23After he had sent the multitudes away,he went up into the mountain by himself to pray. When evening had come, he was there alone.24But the boat was now in the middle of the sea, distressed by the waves, for the wind was contrary.25In the fourth watch of the night,Jesus came to them, walking on the sea.26When the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were troubled, saying, “It’s a ghost!”and they cried out for fear.27But immediately Jesus spoke to them, saying, “Cheer up!It is I! Don’t be afraid.”

28Peter answered him and said,“Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the waters.”

29He said, “Come!”

Peter stepped down from the boatand walked on the waters to come to Jesus.30But when he saw that the wind was strong,he was afraid, and beginning to sink,he cried out, saying, “Lord, save me!”

31Immediately Jesus stretched out his hand, took hold of him, and said to him,“You of little faith, why did you doubt?”32When they got up into the boat, the wind ceased.33Those who were in the boat came and worshiped him, saying, “You are truly the Son of God!”

34When they had crossed over, they came to the land of Gennesaret.35When the people of that place recognized him, they sent into all that surrounding regionand brought to him all who were sick;36and they begged himthat they might just touch the fringe of his garment. As many as touched it were made whole.

Léctio Epístolæ beáti Pauli Apóstoli ad Romános

Rom 8:12-17

Lesson from the letter of St. Paul the Apostle to the Romans

Rom 8:12-17

Brethren: We are debtors, not to the flesh, that we should live according to the flesh, for if you live according to the flesh you will die; but if by the spirit you put to death the deeds of the flesh, you will live. For whoever are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God. Now you have not received a spirit of bondage so as to be again in fear, but you have received a spirit of adoption as sons, by virtue of which we cry, Abba! Father! The Spirit Himself gives testimony to our spirit that we are sons of God. But if we are sons, we are heirs also: heirs indeed of God and joint heirs with Christ.

GospelEvangelium

Sequéntia ☩ sancti Evangélii secúndum Lucam

Luc 16:1-9

Ait autem víllicus intra se: Quid fáciam, quia dóminus meus aufert a me villicatiónem? fódere non váleo, mendicáre erubésco. Scio, quid fáciam, ut, cum amótus fúero a villicatióne, recípiant me in domos suas. Convocátis itaque síngulis debitóribus dómini sui, dicébat primo: Quantum debes dómino meo? At ille dixit: Centum cados ólei.

Continuation ☩ of the Holy Gospel according to Luke

Luke 16:1-9

At that time, Jesus spoke to His disciples this parable: There was a certain rich man who had a steward, who was reported to him as squandering his possessions. And he called him and said to him, ‘What is this that I hear of you? Make an accounting of your stewardship, for you can be steward no longer.’ And the steward said within himself, ‘What shall I do, seeing that my master is taking away the stewardship from me? To dig I am not able; to beg I am ashamed. I know what I shall do, that when I am removed from my stewardship they may receive me into their houses.’ And he summoned each of his master’s debtors and said to the first, ‘How much do you owe my master?’ And he said, ‘A hundred jars of oil.’ He said to him, ‘Take your bond and sit down at once and write fifty.’ Then he said to another, ‘How much do you owe?’ He said, ‘A hundred kors of wheat.’ He said to him, ‘Take your bond and write eighty.’ And the master commended the unjust steward, in that he had acted prudently; for the children of this world, in relation to their own generation, are more prudent than the children of the light. And I say to you, make friends for yourselves with the mammon of wickedness, so that when you fail they may receive you into the everlasting dwellings.
