First ReadingTobit 6:10-11; 7:1bcde, 9-17; 8:4-9a

From the Book of Tobit

10But when they drew near to Rages,11the angel said to the young man,“Brother, today we will lodge with Raguel. He is your kinsman. He has an only daughter named Sarah.I will speak about her, that she should be given to you for a wife.

some verses are not read1They came to Ecbatana, and arrived at the house of Raguel. But Sarah met them;and she greeted them, and they her. Then she brought them into the house. verses 2–8 are not read9and Edna his wife and Sarah his daughter wept. They received them gladly;and they killed a ram of the flock, and served them meat.

But Tobias said to Raphael,“Brother Azarias, speak of those things ofwhich you talked about in the way,and let the matter be finished.”

10So he communicated the thing to Raguel.Raguel said to Tobias, “Eat, drink, and make merry:for it belongs to you to take my child. However I will tell you the truth.11I have given my child to seven men of our relatives, and whenever they came in to her, they died in the night. But for the present be merry.”

And Tobias said, “I will taste nothing here, until you all make a covenantand enter into that covenant with me.”

Raguel said, “Take her to yourself from now on according to custom. You are her relative, and she is yours. The merciful God will give all good success to you.”12And he called his daughter Sarah, and took her by the hand, and gave her to be wife of Tobias, and said, “Behold, take her to yourself after the law of Moses, and lead her away to your father.”And he blessed them.13He called Edna his wife, then took a book, wrote a contract, and sealed it.14Then they began to eat.

15And Raguel called his wife Edna, and said to her, “Sister, prepare the other chamber, and bring her in there.”16She did as he asked her, and brought her in there. She wept, and she received the tears of her daughter, and said to her,17“Be comforted, my child.May the Lord of heavenand earth give you favor for this your sorrow.Be comforted, my daughter.” some verses are not read4But after they were both shut in together,Tobias rose up from the bed,and said, “Sister, arise, and let’s pray that the Lord may have mercy on us.”5And Tobias began to say,“Blessed are you, O God of our fathers, and blessed is your holy and glorious name forever.Let the heavens bless you, and all your creatures.6You made Adam, and gave him Eve his wife for a helper and support. From them came the seed of men.You said, it is not good that the man should be alone.Let’s make him a helper like him.7And now, O Lord, I take not this my sister for lust, but in truth.Command that I may find mercy and grow old with her.”

8She said with him, “Amen.”And they both slept that night.

Responsorial PsalmPsalm 128:1-2, 3, 4-5

1Blessed is everyone who fears the Lord, who walks in his ways.2For you will eat the labor of your hands. You will be happy, and it will be well with you.

3Your wife will be as a fruitful vine in the innermost parts of your house, your children like olive shoots around your table.

4Behold, this is how the man who fears the Lord is blessed.5May the Lord bless you out of Zion, and may you see the good of Jerusalem all the days of your life.

GospelMark 12:28-34

From the Gospel according to Mark

28One of the scribes cameand heard them questioning together, and knowing that he had answered them well, asked him, “Which commandment is the greatest of all?”

29Jesus answered, “The greatest is:‘Hear, Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one.30You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength.’This is the first commandment.31The second is like this:‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’There is no other commandment greater than these.”

32The scribe said to him,“Truly, teacher, you have said well that he is one,and there is none other but he;33and to love him with all the heart, with all the understanding, all the soul, and with all the strength, and to love his neighbor as himself,is more important than all whole burnt offerings and sacrifices.”

34When Jesus saw that he answered wisely,he said to him, “You are not far from God’s Kingdom.”

No one dared ask him any question after that.

Isa. 65:19; 65:23

Ps 43:2

O God, our ears have heard, our fathers have declared to us, the deeds You did in their days.

Glory Be to the Father…

Lesson from the book of Ecclesiasticus

Ecclus 44:1-15

Let us now praise men of renown, our ancestors, each in his own time. The Lord has wrought great glory through His magnificence from the beginning. Rulers of the earth by their authority, men of renown for their might, or counselors in their wisdom, or seers of all things in prophecy; resolute governors of peoples, or judges with discretion; authors skilled in composition, or poets with collected proverbs; composers of melodious psalms, or discoursers on lyric themes; stalwart men, solidly established, lovers of beauty, and at peace in their own estates - all these were glorious in their time, each illustrious in his day. Some of them have left behind a name that is remembered to their praise; but of others there is no memory, for it perished when they perished, and they are as though they had never lived, they and their children after them. Yet these also were godly men whose virtues have not been forgotten; their wealth remains in their families, their posterity are a holy inheritance, and their seed has stood in the covenants. And their children for their sakes remain forever; their seed and their glory shall not be forsaken. All these are buried in peace, but their name lives on and on. At gatherings their wisdom is retold and the assembly sings their praises.

Sequéntia ☩ sancti Evangélii secúndum Matthǽum

Matt 5:1-12

Continuation ☩ of the Holy Gospel according to Matthew

Matt 5:1-12

At that time, Jesus seeing the crowds, went up the mountain. And when He was seated, His disciples came to Him. And opening His mouth He taught them, saying, Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are the meek, for they shall possess the earth. Blessed are they who mourn, for they shall be comforted. Blessed are they who hunger and thirst for justice, for they shall be satisfied. Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy. Blessed are the clean of heart, for they shall see God. Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called the children of God. Blessed are you when men reproach you, and persecute you, and, speaking falsely, say all manner of evil against you, for My sake. Rejoice and exult, because your reward is great in heaven.
