First ReadingJonah 4:1-11

From the Book of Jonah

1But it displeased Jonah exceedingly, and he was angry.2He prayed to the Lord, and said, “Please,Lord, wasn’t this what I saidwhen I was still in my own country? Therefore I hurried to flee to Tarshish, for I knew that you are a gracious God and merciful, slow to anger, and abundant in loving kindness, and you relent of doing harm.3Therefore now, Lord, take, I beg you, my life from me,for it is better for me to die than to live.”

4The Lord said, “Is it right for you to be angry?”

5Then Jonah went out of the cityand sat on the east side of the city, and there made himself a boothand sat under it in the shade, until he might see what would become of the city.6The Lord God prepared a vineand made it to come up over Jonah, that it might be a shade over his head to deliver him from his discomfort. So Jonah was exceedingly glad because of the vine.7But God prepared a worm at dawn the next day,and it chewed on the vine so that it withered.8When the sun arose, God prepared a sultry east wind;and the sun beat on Jonah’s head,so that he was faintand requested for himself that he might die.He said, “It is better for me to die than to live.”

9God said to Jonah,“Is it right for you to be angry about the vine?”

He said, “I am right to be angry, even to death.”

10The Lord said, “You have been concerned for the vine, for which you have not labored, neither made it grow;which came up in a night and perished in a night.11Shouldn’t I be concerned for Nineveh, that great city, inwhich are more than one hundred twenty thousand personswho can’t discern between their right handand their left hand, and also many animals?”

Responsorial PsalmPsalm 86:3-4, 5-6, 9-10

3Be merciful to me, Lord, for I call to you all day long.4Bring joy to the soul of your servant, for to you, Lord, do I lift up my soul.

5For you, Lord, are good, and ready to forgive, abundant in loving kindness to all those who call on you.6Hear, Lord, my prayer.Listen to the voice of my petitions.

9All nations you have made will come and worship before you, Lord. They shall glorify your name.10For you are great, and do wondrous things. You are God alone.

GospelLuke 11:1-4

From the Gospel according to Luke

1When he finished praying in a certain place, one of his disciples said to him,“Lord, teach us to pray, just as John also taught his disciples.”

2He said to them, “When you pray, say,

‘Our Father in heaven, may your name be kept holy.May your Kingdom come.May your will be done on earth, as it is in heaven.3Give us day by day our daily bread.4Forgive us our sins, for we ourselves also forgive everyone who is indebted to us.Bring us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.’”

Léctio Epístolæ beáti Pauli Apóstoli ad Ephésios

Ephes 3:13-21

Lesson from the letter of St. Paul the Apostle to the Ephesians

Eph 3:13-21

Brethren: I pray you not to be disheartened at my tribulations for you, for they are your glory. For this reason I bend my knees to the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, from Whom all fatherhood in heaven and on earth receives its name, that He may grant you from His glorious riches to be strengthened with power through His Spirit unto the progress of the inner man; and to have Christ dwelling through faith in your hearts: so that, being rooted and grounded in love, you may be able to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and to know Christ’s love which surpasses knowledge, in order that you may be filled unto all the fullness of God. Now, to Him Who is able to accomplish all things in a measure far beyond what we ask or conceive, in keeping with the power that is at work in us - to Him be glory in the Church and in Christ Jesus down through all the ages of time without end. Amen.

GospelEvangelium

Sequéntia ☩ sancti Evangélii secúndum Lucam.

Luc 14:1-11

At illi tacuérunt.

Continuation ☩ of the Holy Gospel according to Luke

Luke 14:1-11

At that time, when Jesus entered the house of one of the rulers of the Pharisees on the Sabbath to take food, they watched Him. And behold, there was a certain man before Him who had the dropsy. And Jesus asked the lawyers and Pharisees, saying, Is it lawful to cure on the Sabbath? But they remained silent. And He took and healed him and let him go. Then addressing them, He said, Which of you shall have an ass or an ox fall into a pit, and will not immediately draw him up on the Sabbath? And they could give Him no answer to these things. But He also spoke a parable to those invited, observing how they were choosing the first places at table, and He said to them, When you are invited to a wedding feast, do not recline in the first place, lest perhaps one more distinguished than you have been invited by him, and he who invited you and him come and say to you, ‘Make room for this man’; and then you begin with shame to take the last place. But when you are invited go and recline in the last place; that when he who invited you comes in, he may say to you, ‘Friend, go up higher!’ Then you will be honored in the presence of all who are at table with you. For everyone who exalts himself shall be humbled, and he who humbles himself shall be exalted.

It is truly meet and just, and profitable unto salvation, that we should at all times, and in all places, give thanks to Thee, O Holy Lord, Father Almighty, eternal God, through Christ, our Lord. Through whom the Angels praise Thy Majesty, the Dominions adore it, the Powers are in awe. Which the heavens and the hosts of heaven together with the blessed Seraphim joyfully do magnify. And do Thou command that it be permitted us to join with them in confessing Thee, while we say with lowly praise:
