First ReadingIsaiah 50:5-9a

From the Book of Isaiah

5The Lord GOD has opened my ear.I was not rebellious.I have not turned back.6I gave my back to those who beat me,and my cheeks to those who plucked off the hair.I didn’t hide my face from shame and spitting.7For the Lord GOD will help me.Therefore I have not been confounded. Therefore I have set my face like a flint, and I know that I won’t be disappointed.8He who justifies me is near.Who will bring charges against me?Let us stand up together.Who is my adversary?Let him come near to me.9Behold, the Lord GOD will help me!Who is he who will condemn me?Behold, they will all grow old like a garment. The moths will eat them up.

Responsorial PsalmPsalm 116:1-2, 3-4, 5-6, 8-9

1I love the Lord, because he listens to my voice, and my cries for mercy.2Because he has turned his ear to me,therefore I will call on him as long as I live.

3The cords of death surrounded me,the pains of Sheol got a hold of me.I found trouble and sorrow.4Then I called on the Lord’s name:“Lord, I beg you, deliver my soul.”

5The Lord is gracious and righteous.Yes, our God is merciful.6The Lord preserves the simple.I was brought low, and he saved me.

8For you have delivered my soul from death,my eyes from tears, and my feet from falling.9I will walk before the Lord in the land of the living.

Second ReadingJames 2:14-18

From the Letter of James

14What good is it, my brothers,if a man says he has faith, but has no works? Can faith save him?15And if a brother or sister is nakedand in lack of daily food,16and one of you tells them, “Go in peace.Be warmed and filled;”yet you didn’t give them the things the body needs, what good is it?17Even so faith, if it has no works, is dead in itself.18Yes, a man will say, “You have faith, and I have works.”Show me your faith without works, and I will show you my faith by my works.

GospelMark 8:27-35

From the Gospel according to Mark

27Jesus went out, with his disciples, into the villages of Caesarea Philippi. On the way he asked his disciples,“Who do men say that I am?”

28They told him, “John the Baptizer, and others say Elijah, but others, one of the prophets.”

29He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?”

Peter answered, “You are the Christ.”

30He commanded them that they should tell no one about him.31He began to teach themthat the Son of Man must suffer many things, and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests, and the scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise again.32He spoke to them openly.Peter took him and began to rebuke him.33But he, turning around and seeing his disciples, rebuked Peter, and said,“Get behind me, Satan! For you have in mind not the things of God,but the things of men.”

34He called the multitude to himself with his disciples and said to them,“Whoever wants to come after me,let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.35For whoever wants to save his life will lose it;and whoever will lose his life for my sakeand the sake of the Good News will save it.

Léctio Epístolæ beáti Pauli Apóstoli ad Ephésios

Ephes 3:13-21

Fratres: Obsecro vos, ne deficiátis in tribulatiónibus meis pro vobis: quæ est glória vestra. Lesson from the letter of St. Paul the Apostle to the Ephesians

Eph 3:13-21

Brethren: I pray you not to be disheartened at my tribulations for you, for they are your glory. For this reason I bend my knees to the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, from Whom all fatherhood in heaven and on earth receives its name, that He may grant you from His glorious riches to be strengthened with power through His Spirit unto the progress of the inner man; and to have Christ dwelling through faith in your hearts: so that, being rooted and grounded in love, you may be able to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and to know Christ’s love which surpasses knowledge, in order that you may be filled unto all the fullness of God. Now, to Him Who is able to accomplish all things in a measure far beyond what we ask or conceive, in keeping with the power that is at work in us - to Him be glory in the Church and in Christ Jesus down through all the ages of time without end. Amen.

GospelEvangelium

Sequéntia ☩ sancti Evangélii secúndum Lucam.

Luc 14:1-11

At illi tacuérunt.

Continuation ☩ of the Holy Gospel according to Luke

Luke 14:1-11

At that time, when Jesus entered the house of one of the rulers of the Pharisees on the Sabbath to take food, they watched Him. And behold, there was a certain man before Him who had the dropsy. And Jesus asked the lawyers and Pharisees, saying, Is it lawful to cure on the Sabbath? But they remained silent. And He took and healed him and let him go. Then addressing them, He said, Which of you shall have an ass or an ox fall into a pit, and will not immediately draw him up on the Sabbath? And they could give Him no answer to these things. But He also spoke a parable to those invited, observing how they were choosing the first places at table, and He said to them, When you are invited to a wedding feast, do not recline in the first place, lest perhaps one more distinguished than you have been invited by him, and he who invited you and him come and say to you, ‘Make room for this man’; and then you begin with shame to take the last place. But when you are invited go and recline in the last place; that when he who invited you comes in, he may say to you, ‘Friend, go up higher!’ Then you will be honored in the presence of all who are at table with you. For everyone who exalts himself shall be humbled, and he who humbles himself shall be exalted.

PrefacePrefatio

Holy Trinity

It is truly meet and just, right and for our salvation, that we should at all times, and in all places, give thanks unto Thee, O holy Lord, Father almighty, everlasting God; Who, together with Thine only-begotten Son, and the Holy Ghost, art one God, one Lord: not in the oneness of a single Person, but in the Trinity of one substance. For what we believe by Thy revelation of Thy glory, the same do we believe of Thy Son, the same of the Holy Ghost, without difference or separation. So that in confessing the true and everlasting Godhead, distinction in persons, unity in essence, and equality in majesty may be adored. Which the Angels and Archangels, the Cherubim also and Seraphim do praise: who cease not daily to cry out, with one voice saying:

Ps 70:16-18

O Lord, I will tell of Your singular justice; O God, You have taught me from my youth; and now that I am old and gray, O God, forsake me not.
